  • one of the best vids i've ever seen here on youtube

you definitely know your stuff, and i know what you mean, everyone has different needs, its just ridiculous to compare them all or an oem user to compare to a vast amount of options and configurations that are possible and available to anyone with experience, and it is indeed a whole different world to someone like that

    very good vid mrbit10

  • @VincentX202 thank you very much for your viewership and great comment.

  • my computers look like junk . i am poor so i need something powerfull so i learn about computers i just have no choice but to be smart and i dont need the extras that come with oem i just need what i need . an oem is like having allot of toolbars on your browser.one of my computers is a q6600 fanless undervolted to .963 v and a 780i sli board (i got it with a rocketfish 700 w ps from my friend for 200 the case was smashed but it survived . it is cool even when i play far cry 2

  • I like this video I can also say while I am more of a Linux user and have more PC's than Macs I work in repairing Macs. I got to say that the Mac Pro's are a god-send when working on them however that being said the iMacs are just crazy to fix cuz of their unique form factors although they have gotten much better but still not as tech friendly as some OEMs. Yet for the general customer Apple produces better products than other OEMs like Dell or HP.

  • one of the things that i like about your videos is that they are very level and un-bias along with that you say windows PC or windows machine that alone just shows how much more educated you are and not like the 1million other mac vs. PC people that don't even realize that a Mac is a PC as a PC is a Personal Computer. And totally agree that Macintosh computers are built with extremely high tolerances and built very well. I feel that if other OEMs want to compete they wouldn't be much cheaper.

  • I really don't understand Mac vs PC videos. Does anyone not realize it's simply a matter of personal preference? One person might like a Mac or PC, but a fanboy can't change that person's likes/dislikes. It's just pointless to argue over personal preference.

  • @dunlrock

To add they don't realize that a Mac is a Pc. And they honestly think they can and it is ridiculous how they try to push there hard set opinions onto less educated people. Don't get me wrong i got a Mac when Chris Pirillo switched to one. This does not mean i am a Pirillo fanboy but i just trust his opinion allot more. I did not make a switch but do like my mac a bit more yet keep windows PCs to keep my thoughts on the matter level and un-bias. Nice comment i totally agree.

  • Regarding OC'ing.

I compare it with what some people do with their cars.

They chip the engine to get the most performance out of it. Often the engine is capable of delivering much more horsepower by optimizing how it works.

The same thing with a CPU.

A CPU can be OC'ed, and deliver more oomph.

And as you said, optimizing RAM-timings and such also play a role in this.

But a very important thing, is maintenance, as you said.

Dusting it off from time to time helps the hardware to last longer.

  • Building computers isn't hard.

Even my sister built her own PC a year ago.

I told her which parts she needed, and she bought them and put them together herself.

She had an old Dell, but she saw that building her own PC gave her more options, and also at a lower cost.

And if you're worried that you'll buy the wrong RAM or a mobo with the wrong CPU-socket, many retailers offer upgrade kits with RAM, mobo and CPU.

No chance to go wrong with that.

But buying a OEM is always going to be easier.

  • @sn0le

    I agree totally .

I think that building your own PC just allows you to know more on how one works and gives you a sense of pride you just don't get with any OEM even apple. Yet i think that if any OEM Apple gives you the best sense of pride knowing that your Computer is being built with no corners cut and with tolerances that seem almost useless until you get your hands on one. This goes especially for there Macbook and Macbook Pro line but generally anything made by Apple.

  • I like Your style. Very Thoughtful video. You do for computers what I try and do for theology...I also was into the build Your Own P.Cs I started building them in 95. A friend of mine was a Microsoft engineer, and he showed me how to build P.C.s. I wanted to learn so that i could keep up with the next generation of Windows. But i got tied of it and went Mac...Unfortunately my recent upgrade to SL sure reminded me of windows:( Great vids! Thanks

  • one good reason why a custom build is better than a shop buy is.. manufactures build as cheap as they can to make a profit..custom builds tend to use quality products

  • absolutely, u get way more bang for your buck with a custom build.

  • Fair enough I dont make videos like yourself but thats a time limitation for me. And yes I'm a fully qualified PC technician

With a Diploma in IT and hold a current MCSE. So I do know when I hear people talk rubbish and then here people like

Mrbit. Please listen to him and learn from it and to all the others out there, learn your shit before you speak.

  • Well said as usual Mrbit. I only hope now the unnecessary bashing that takes place from people who do not understand

anything other than them protecting their parents investment of their apple or PC but attacking people who use the

Opposite in order to make them feel better inside will stop. I cannot stand people who make videos on technology who have no Working knowledge nor do they even take the time to prepare their video prior to running their mouth about nothing!

  • Heh. Sounds like you need lots of threads and whatnot. Do you run a cluster?

  • I'm also a custom builder because of the high probability that the final build will meet my expectations.

I also have this hobby of bulding PCs, i for exemple would never buy a OEM for me or friends or someone that calls for my help.

BUT i would never say that a OEM PC is a bad choice.

OEM PCs meet the requirements most people have and are a very good choice for anyone that needs a PC, but doesn't have the knoledge to build a custom one.

  • Also i would like to add about overclocking:

OCing is a hobby, but i wouldnt say that it brings more performance for a user that builds a custom PC.

A custom PC builder, i would say that is a person that wants to obtain best performance for the money he can spend.

In my opinion, if that person overclocks to obtain better performance, is a bad pc builder, because OCing in safe margins implies additional costs which could have contribute at buying a better component.

  • I totally agree. I'm custom builder.

    custom pc

(+) best performance for best price, imagination is a limit for your budget

(-) lot of time trying to know the best solution, you're fault if something is wrong

    OEM

(+) simple solution, for cheap and basic home and company needs, support, OS preinstalled

(-) bad price - bad performance, brand is expensive for what they offer

    Apple

(+) simple (lots of preinstalled), long lasting life, support, best disign

(-) too expensive, not gaming rigs

  • 01:24 I think when you say spinny things you are referring to fans :-) Just joking good vid glad to see more

  • So with liquid cooling... does the liquid ever evaporates? If so what do you do, pour water into your machine? :D

  • it does have a slow evaporation rate, slow. I check it once a year.

  • do you change your fluids before they break down the metal? things like anti-freeze protects the cooling system for 9 months then things rust

  • @mrbit10

    Corsair H50 Hydro ;)

    Lazyman's liquid cooling.

  • I know people who use their own e-mail server hosted at home instead of using something like gmail... they essentially custom build their mail server like people do custom build machines!!

Are they necessarily smarter? Not necessarily, but I say they are more knowledgeable than me at setting up a mail server!!

  • Great Video!

  • Not to stir up trouble But if only we can get OS X on a custom build then Mrbit and I will be in heaven :)

  • I dont understand why apple doesnt release OSX. With the huge HUGE market share they will get compared to now, they can make tons and TONS of money on apps that they can make and sell which will only run under OSX.

  • if apple released OSX they'd have sooooo many drivers problems, bugs, kernel panics the lot :)

  • Overclocking to me is unnecessary because the CPU's today are like double of what I need for what I'm doing. I don't play games so watching youtube and doing homework is fast.

  • not really, if the software is not multi-threaded you are only then balancing tasks against cores. That is why i mentioned UltraSparc 64 threads and Power6 as applications are multi-threaded for those CPUs, until then and the x86 decode conversion the faster you can get the micro-ops to work the faster commands can be read and sent barring any other variables

  • geez the comment did not post, i wanted to say that i miss-read your comment, so i will only add that by OCing while you may not need it, do get more performance for the money

  • Do you feel that Apples quality has declined?

  • yes and no, in some areas yes and others no

  • They seem to have gotten off to a bad start with the new iMacs.

  • My two work Dell Precisions were not cheap... two dual xeon machines... over £2000 ($3000) at the time (3 years ago) and one is still running the same XP install it came with, not a problem, still as fast, and the other is running WIndows 7 like a dream...

Fact is, if you know what your doing with computers, you wont have a problem, you only run into issues when you start messing about, or installing things you dont understand.

  • ur very good at pcs nice keep up

  • i dont doubt your knowledge ,,,,, it is true

    .

    i saw your VIDs

  • Great vid as always. 5*

  • Wow, good vid mirbit. I have to say I agree with most of what you side. :) And your right, it's all about giver your computer the right care.

  • Great video.

What's the best way to dust out your Mac Pro? I own a Mac Pro and I'm not sure how much or even how I have to clean it.

  • I use a vacuum small hose after blowing out gently with compressed air, unplugged of course and the front fans, back fan assemblies and power supply.

  • don't you run the risk of a static discharge by using a vacuum cleaner?

  • i have not in 15 years, you really are not putting it all that close to the hardware, you first blow out the dust and use the vacuum to suck up the dust freed.

  • Im running a Boxx 8 core workstation. It came overclocked from Boxx at 4Ghz. Been running it for a year now. No dust inside, as it has a filter on the front. Cooling is done by a closed loop liquid system (like Zoul's).

Either way, I have no problem with OEM or custom. Ive used both and you can have a great rig if you know what you're doing.

  • yeah, BOXX is a completely different story.

  • what type of bow is that on the wall Bit? lbs.?

and true custom builds have no warranty, just parts warranty. There are several advantages to having oem and vise-a-versa. your trying to be non biased and thats good but your being an advocate for custom builds which is in a since, bias.

  • that is a bear compound bow, I hunted with it a one time. Sure I have Bias to custom builds but Apple is the only OEM i really trust at the same time.

  • warranties, yes both are fine for me, I happened to have had problems when apple care runs out, ughh oh well, nothing is perfect

  • you're right on that part, parts warranties tend to be shit - turnaround time is 2-3 weeks compared to the two business day turnaround time I get from Lenovo for my thinkpad and the manufacturer doesn't usually cover shipping and handling.

then again, if the alternative is to get a shitty Dell or Gateway "gaming" PC I'd rather shoot myself in the foot (don't say Apple, they don't sell a proper gaming machine)

  • how about the old alienware pcs?

  • why would I buy an old Alienware? The new ones are shit and the old ones are, well, old.

  • as far as i know, dell bought alienware last year, so an early 2008 alienware isprobably not that old to be labeled as ``old´´. But of course i´m no expert in this theme so i could be completely wrong, im just saying :)

  • alienware was bought out in 2006 and they had gone down the shitter years before that anyway. for prebuilt gaming PCs, falcon northwest and -maybe- biohazard are the best.

  • as much as i didnt need that info right now, i might need it in a soon future, so thanks for clearing that up

  • My MacBook Pro took half a month last time it needed a service so I was forced to be without my main machine at the time. OEM isn't necessarily better in all cases.

  • i spilled water on my thinkpad and it needed a new motherboard. accidental damage warranty covered it and I had the fixed laptop back two days after the incident :)

  • What's wrong with part warranties? As long as you buy components from solid companies you should have absolutely NO issues. Hell, Evga, which is one of my favorite Nvidia card manufacturers are badass. They offer step up programs if you buy a graphics card and a new one pops out, you can trade for the newer model. So if you're custom building only buy quality components from a quality manufacturer.

    Nevertheless, great video Mrbit.

  • hmm, I'm thinking of getting an EVGA motherboard for my next build. do you have experience with their motherboards? I generally stick with Intel and ASUS.

  • Evga are good, I recommend getting the ones with a lifetime warranty.

  • Understood.

  • For the overclocking argument, overclocking only destroys hardware if you don't know what your doing. If you don't know what your doing, don't freaking overclock. Nuff said.

  • I hate seeing people spend TONS of money on, say, a Core i7 and an ASUS P6T Deluxe v2 or whatever and cheaping out on the case or power supply. Then they go around talking about how custom builds SUCK and you should take their word for it because they've BEEN THERE, man.

Another thing I hate is people buying dual graphics cards and connecting that SLI setup to a 22" BenQ monitor running 1680x1050.

The problem with custom builds is that people don't know what the hell they're doing.

  • People buy what they want. People like..ME for example, like to know what they have, and I know what I want. If I go and buy an OEM I don't know what i'm getting, other than the processor. I've built 3 custom computers, and I've been way happier since.

  • what I'm saying is that getting a dual SLI setup for a shitty monitor is a huge waste

  • OR if your retarded and want more frames that are useless

  • That's spot on. I do have a custom built PC for gaming, since Apple doesn't care to have the top of the line graphics options. Maybe this is about to change due to OpenCL, I would be the happiest person on Earth.

I found out that there is only one area where the Mac Pro case design could improve a bit, and that's HDD mounting. By having it swappable, we lose vibration absorbtion. The mounts in my Antec P182 are more efficient in regards of noise and vibration.

  • I wonder if Apple should go back to IBM or some other chip

I fore one would love to make a computer company based around IBM chips instead of Intel or Amd

  • Then there would be no compatibility.

  • well

    time will only tell

I just have this dream about being different

  • no, going back to PowerPC would put Apple back in their old niche.

  • Well said!

  • The only OEMs I use are asus and MSI. As for the overclocking argument I am at 4ghz now super cool and stable. 38c at idle :-D

  • So, do you think OEM's should migrate toward liquid-cooling their machines as a standard?

  • no, cost is a concern but they are getting better a closed loops. They are also getting better on heat and energy consumption so the need for great coolers is going away as the energy use is lowering.

  • Comment removed

  • They now make self contained water cooling systems. I wasn't one for water cooling before but the possibilities are expanding. Keeps my cpu ice cold.

  • and how much current does it draw? j/k

    It's like a Micro Frig

  • you mean the cpu, that is what i am talking about? As zoul said, closed loops are getting better and more popular.

  • I agree, but how much current off the PS? Just asking ... just wondering where does the heat go.

  • *goes

  • Mr Bit really interesting video and fantastic to see you back again mate. All the best and take care.

  • MrBit - even coming from someone like me who knows next to nothing about custom builds I can honestly say this is one of the best videos I have seen in a long while - and actually could not have come at a better time. I have no issues with people who custom build - maybe I'll get into it one day. I just have a problem with people who diss other different types of computer users.

For now all I'd say to them are that my macs are more than enough for what I need them for - all that matters. 5*&fav

  • Yep, thanks for another great video:) Keep it up:D

  • Great vid, as usual.

  • "I want to get most out of the hardware" - Mr.Bit

You and me both. I'm a semi-conservative OCer now, I used to try to get it the fastest and fight the tolerance stack ups, when I was younger. I don't care if someone buys an OEM, I just dont' like the comments and videos of people bashing custom builders.

  • and also ... if a "home made bomb" (boy is that getting old) has great air flow ... then it's ok with me ... but I do use cable management cause I like looking at my hardware through the window, and give me better air flow. It's like me bashing people who put LED fans because I don't like it. It's stupid, people are different.

and most people will not pop their CPU, because it does shutdown if it gets to hot ... not that you can't , it's just unlikely.

  • Great video. You covered a lot of issues. Boils down to choice. I'm sure this kind of insane arguements dont happen when buying fruit or something. LOL...then again who knows. Maybe it does. Maybe there is an orange vs pear website where debates go on about which is better :)

  • oem comps suck and overclocking does shorten the life of the machine

and on / off power cycling also shortens the life of solid state shit but hours on is crappy for motor bearings like in fans and hard drives

  • Its true, but most of the time, the shortened life span far exceeds how long people will actually want to keep the computer.

  • You have never OC a system before

  • u can oc yourself dude i dont care what u have to say

  • took you a month to find this comment, you were obsessed with this one weren't ya

  • was bored and noticed this while i

was eating an OC FROM A SYSTEM

  • i soo want to put my i7 in to a classic case ,,,,and fuck oemz,,

  • i second that because oem computers have boards made in china

  • everythingz made in china, , even you and me xD ,,
