I have lived in Canada since 97 I miss SA but not the way it is now and will not go back other than to see family that cannot leave. Maybe people go back because its home - warts and all. I've seen people do the same in the US with various regions. Maybe come from a poor area or one that has a history of discrimination, but its still home and they eventually return in spite of the difficulties. I live in California and I've seen people return to really poor areas of the South after living here for years just because they miss their family, friends and familiar places. Home is where the heart is - even when its rough.
People return because they can't succeed in another country. It is not easy leaving everything you know behind. However many do very well, infact a survey done in Australia revealed that South Africans are amoung the highest paid there. I'm new to the UK, and it is a struggle, but it offers a great future. South Africa just offered death and despair...but the weather was great.

Although it does satisfy me to know that people are getting most optimistic about South Africa. I mean a few years ago everyone was as critical and pessimistic as you but it really feels as if democracy is starting to shine. I'm an expat myself, and having lived a relatively good life in Australia for a long time I can see myself returning to SA - because in SA, there is change to be made, something to look forward to.There are risks, of course, but in the end it's worth seeing the country grow.

We have just moved to Australia - AWSOME!!! and there are millions of South Africans (Skilled) here. We are giving our children a future in a safe country.

You can't dictate to a person what their OPINION of their own quality of life should be. In that article the woman says she is an economist - it will be HARDER to progress in her career, she prob will still do well. I have friends who live there who are profesisonals and they are doing very very well.
I live in London, and I cannot wait to get out of here, back to SA.

i am not dictating!!! iam questioning the basis of what they consider quality iof life. I am trying to get people to think about what that means in partical terms. sometimes peoples forget about what is really important and miss home so bad that they forget about the bad, romantice the good and their values are emotionally swayed.
i don't live in London cos i hate it and would consider my quality of life to be much lower if i lived there, i live much further out and it is gorgeous

when considering the economy of the UK immigrants contribute more than what they can get out as they have reduced benefits in other social institutions.
about the burglar bars, once again there are pockets of areas (south london) where this happens in the UK, in SA it is an ESSENTIAL item to have ANYWHERE in SA.

the whites and blacks that you mention as immigrants to the UK are also not entiteled to other benefits so they actually contribute alot in taxes and spending so i would argue whether "the strain" on the NHS is real or just a convient excuse to try and get more money from the goverment.
whilst dyiong in a UK hospital is rare in government hospitals it is normal everyday occurance with too many cases to report and the media does not care enough to report!!

Maybe people go back because its home - warts and all. I've seen people do the same in the US with various regions. Maybe come from a poor area or one that has a history of discrimination, but its still home and they eventually return in spite of the difficulties. I live in California and I've seen people return to really poor areas of the South after living here for years just because they miss their family, friends and familiar places. Home is where the heart is - even when its rough.

People return because they can't succeed in another country. It is not easy leaving everything you know behind. However many do very well, infact a survey done in Australia revealed that South Africans are amoung the highest paid there. I'm new to the UK, and it is a struggle, but it offers a great future. South Africa just offered death and despair...but the weather was great.

Problem is you are trying to logic out the emotion of emigration. No matter what some people say, we are africans and we are emotionally connected to south africa. Quality of life is a state of mind. I am in Aus and will never go back. I do feel that migrants must be committed (before they leave) to stay at least 3yrs before making a decision to try and take some of the emotion out of the decision. going back this year after 3 years away due to jobs and health, my wife has goes twice a year so regular. i miss SA immensely but i look at what ANC delivered in last 14 years the poor & oppressed have had very little or no improvement in their lives & the fat cats in gov r just getting richer......that is wrong & in the end will not take SA in the right direction....it is so sad to see.............but i hope eventually some day we'll have a better accountable gov! then maybe i can go back!!

Although it does satisfy me to know that people are getting most optimistic about South Africa. I mean a few years ago everyone was as critical and pessimistic as you but it really feels as if democracy is starting to shine. I'm an expat myself, and having lived a relatively good life in Australia for a long time I can see myself returning to SA - because in SA, there is change to be made, something to look forward to.There are risks, of course, but in the end it's worth seeing the country grow.

SA is by no means the best country on earth, but it really just does depend on whether your priorities. I don't have a family, but you obviously do, so that is more important to you, naturally. I can't say that I would be totally comfortable with raising a middle class white family in SA. One thing is certain about SA though: it does have the best constitution in the world. They just need to eliminate bloody BEE and Affirmative Action. How long have you been in the U.S.? Your SA accent is gone!

South Africa isn't going to be what you consider 'quality' overnight - this can only be expected considering the past circumstances. Perhaps you won't agree, but South Africa is clearly getting better, not worse. Be critical, but not too critical. SA Democracy has only been around for 15 years.
