Have you ever managed to get that crisp sound you've got in this vid. while playing live? If so, through which amp?.. (Got a MM signature as well, but havent managed to get that crisp J sound while not plugged through Pedalboard -> headphones)
Hi Marlowe! I love your videos, they're really helpful! But the thing is that I've seen Jaco's vhs video, and he speaks about his technique... he said, that he uses only 2 fingers always, and uses the other 2 for muting, sometimes his thumb... BTW nice moves there ;)
Unless Fender made a weird Jazz Bass back in the day that I don't know about, that's a Marcus Miller signature Fender Jazz. It has that great big pickguard/control plate and I think you can only get it with a maple fretboard/pearl inlays.
great stuff! very jaco like. l've just been watching a jaco dvd i've got and your playing sounded great. jaco and his work in weather report has always been my favorite and you've got the groove. thanks.
To quote a Mr. adrian5b: "that's just an opinion haha.."
I don't think you quite grasp the point. People have different preferences. Best is subject to the eye of the beholder. All I'm saying is why not have a tone that's easy to get with "any" bass, just because of that reason? It's not about how rare the tone is, it's about how it speaks to the player.
How long did it take you to get the 3 finger technique down? Ive been working at it forever and everytime i try to go faster with it i keep going back to using just my two fingers.
My hand locks up after a few moments worth of doing this technique . Do you Set your bass up differrently ? or am I approaching it all wrong? what should I do?
(I'm coming up on my first year anniversary of playing bass and something occured to me)
...for left and right hand muting does it make sense to describe the left hand as just letting the notes out from kind of behind the bass... because they should be there anyway, its all about pressure and independent motion, isn't it? and yes, i am way too analytical (I'm a geologist, go figure).. but I really love working for fun!
whats the pros and cons of the 2 and 3 finger technique? someone plz PM me, coz my teacher told me that i had a good 2 finger technique and to add the 3rd finger for more speed im a begginer.
Well, actually 2 fingers are enough, but in many cases 3 fingers are helpful. As for me, I use 3 fingers the very moment I have to follow some fast bass drum lines, or if I have to play a fast group of notes for a long amount of time. Then, I have to say that Wooten uses 2 fingers and he does anything you want :). Anyway, my bass teacher uses thumb, index and middle, using the same motions of slap tecnique. It depends on your personal taste :)

you could get a better tone from that awesome bass... apart from that, it is a good vid
adrian5b 3 years ago
and how could he get better tone?! this sounds fuckin' killer!
jagbass1016 3 years ago 12
that's just an opinion haha.. that tone he's making is easy to get with any bass... but he can make unique fender tones out of that baby
adrian5b 3 years ago
No reason to box himself into one tone just because it's unique to that bass.
