I am provençal, living in the south of France. The original language of my region was the provençal, sounding as the spanish. Still, during the revolution wars, during WW1 and WW2 each men of this part of france went to the north to defend the nation.

M1kser1: I doubt that either French, Russian or Swedish thought of the Finnish people as a separate entity at all, t'was just a matter of taking land from Sweden to Russia. Actually Finland enjoyed much more self-rule and national identity under Russian rule, including their own parliament, church, own language in schools, local authorities. He didn't make Russia attack Finland. At the most he said "ok" because the alternative was going to war with Russia again. He'd already been at war with Russia for 2 years in 1807. Would Finland have gone to war with Russia to defend Poland or France? No. So a bit more respect for the guy who would probably have liberated you in 1812 or 1813 if he'd got a surrender out of the Russians.

Tout le monde a besoin d'une psychanalyse, je suis sans doute moins cultivé que toi, j'en conviens. Mais bon moi je trouve ça bien quand notre histoire est admirée, par un étranger (surtout de 16 ans). Mais mon info restera comme je le veux et je ne la renierai pas pour rappeler que quand on admire Napoleon 1er, il faut aussi y associer une ("certaine" si ça fait trop mal à un anglosaxon de le faire lol) admiration pour le peuple français de la révolution de 1789 et l'empire (et vue ton pseudo ce n'est pas toi qui va me contredire ^^)

Mais tu sais moi perso, Louis XIV, Molière, Versaille, je crache pas dessus, même si je suis un citoyen Français en cet an de grace 2008, au même titre que toi d'ailleur. Je considère notre histoire comme un patrimoine et je ne prend pas position sur des fait historique. Et surtout je suis fière qu'un petit norvégien de 16 ans qui a la suite de son court d'histoire a voué une passion à une de nos icones historiques.

I understand why some people don't like Napoléon. But you can't compare him with Hitler, notably because of the shoah.
At the begining the war is because all the monarchies attack France (because they don't accept the republic). The young republic had no choice except defend itself against all the rest of the continent. The result is that Napoleon took the power and then counter-attacked. There was a lot of dead but also a hope for some Europeans. Don't forget the monarchies were dictatures!
