They said it was hot and humid at the track during his hour record. Hot and humid air is better for speed because there is less wind resistance than cold and dry air conditions. Most people think that humid air provides more resistance because water is heavier than air, but in actuality the water molecules displace the heavier air made up of primarily Nitrogen and Oxygen, so the air is thinner.

although this is true, the conditions tend to balance out performance..

Humid - able to move through air easier but has effects on the body like heat etc.

Dry - more friction against air but less energy expended through cooling etc.

They played Obree's accomplishment down in this video. He didn't have the big money or the UCI behind him. Obree was a massive force on his own. Boardxman gets his due, no doubt, but Obree was the man that year.
