"The "Hearts Filthy Lesson" video features a band of "punks" who ritually dismember a mannequin—obviously meant to represent Osiris-Dionysus, the "Hanged Man". In alchemy, too, as in the Vision of Zosimos, there are frequently acts of dismemberment and disintegration prior to reintegration. What is the "Hearts Filthy Lesson"? It is "death," answers Bowie in the 1995 press kit—the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge."
@NoDestinyLive4Now Seems like this video was done in the style of the "Closer" video. I think one of Bowie's band members wore the infamous "crucifix mask" from that video during live shows
@emmabrkrshrp I'm not a NIN expert. The question is, which came first? lol. They did tour together for this album. Bowie and NIN are pretty influential on each other I guess.
@arabiansanchez I looked it up and NIN released the song Closer in 1994, while H.F.L. was released in the September of 1995! Trent from NIN worked with Bowie on some stuff, so its not surprising they have some similarities! Both are totally bitchin!
Bowie was a revolutionary musician/stylist/tastemaker before Brian Warner was even born. Cart before horse. Ziggy Stardust was Marilyn Manson before Marilyn Manson was Marilyn Manson.
Yes, I agree. Manson-esque. But Manson is in many ways a hilarious version of Bowie. But I'm afraid dear Marilyn doesn't realise it. Don't get me wrong I like some of the Marilyn Manson tracks very much and think he's a great entertainer, but for some odd reason I always get the impression when he's acting furious & angry on stage that he must be beaten up a lot at school when he was a kid. Or they stole his bike...:-)
ME SUPERMEGA ENCANTO EL VIDEO. ADEMAS BOWIE SIEMPRE HA SIDO Y SERA LA MAXIMA EXPRESION MUSICAL EN EL ROLLO ALTERNATIVO GLAM Y TODOS ESOS GENEROS QUE LO CARACTERIZAN
hey! at :32 isn't that Me'Shell Ndegeocello??? remember "if that's your boyfriend (he wasn't last night)! that song was pretty boss. I'd swear thats her and she's rolled with the Bowie Flagship on more than a few occasions...
@TheEloeo I think MR. Reznor helped with the music or influenced in this song and definetly did the music in I'm afraid of aAmericans and definitely did a remix of this song,
My favourite music video. People talk about image and stars like Kylie, Madonna and Lady Ga Ga, but few people understand presentation better than Bowie. He's a chameleon and he doesn't only make the most of himself, he also understands how to get the best out of other people on his behalf. This is sublime.
@kinkabala If that's the case then the feelings mutual. Listen to NIN's 'A Warm Place' and then 'Crystal Japan'. I'm pretty sure they were touring together around this time as well.
@kinkabala Fair enough I love both 'versions' if you could call it that as well as both artists. Bowie himself has described himself as a 'culture vulture'. I would say this song lends itself more to Einsturzende Neubauten more than NIN imo but I can definitely see the similarities with Closer and this video though. I'll give you that.
To think that Samuel Bayer, the director of this video, also directed the remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street. How did he go from making this creepy little gem to that crapfest?!
@learntospel true! it's very obvious! reznor's signature cannot be missed in bowie's (even more obvious in "i'm afraid of americans") or manson's work from that period of the 90's! he was the "man" then! he still is, in my opinion, the master of this genre! only sorry to have never seen NIN live!
Yeah...it's ALL the same! Manson's "Beautiful People" video is pretty much the SAME as this! Same "tone" and same video imagery.....NOBODY is original! Oh...except LAMB OF GOD!!!! L.O.G. RULES!!!!!!!!!
Typical Bowie genius. This clip should almost have a warning for minors. LOL But its brilliant the whole concept. The most brilliant entertainer ever. He is a singer, an actor and a genius. He is just brilliant!!! Nothing else to say!!!
Sam Bayer's style with music videos resemble lot of David Fincher's great videos. This absolutely is one of the greatest music videos ever made. Dark, twisted and very visionary stuff from Bayer.
This song is used for the closing credits for the movie "Seven" with Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. The movie is brilliant. It is as dark and disturbing as this video. This song is a perfect choice for its close. What an artist Bowie is. Amazing.
The video reminds me "Closer" video by NIN, and it sounds industrial as NIN, did they collaborate in this song with Bowie?

I love this song, the gore-punk atmosphere is GREAT.
I love David with that crazy-little devil face. He is the only one able to appear with that look and keep on being so handsome , at the same time.
