Boston has the best defenseman in the NHL and the best goalie. They also had good backups in Fernandez and even Rask. They're also stacked with good defensive forwards : Bergeron, Sturm, Recchi, Kobasew, Krejci.. I wouldn't exactly call players like Wideman, Stuart, Ference or Hunwick bad defensively either. Just look at how good some of their players +/- are, pretty good at showing how solid that player is defensively. The main difference is easily goaltending though.
And the Sharks thing wasn't his fault.. Marleau, Cheechoo and Thornton were all huge playoff chokers.
You can tell how good he was defensively by looking at when he played with good players in SJ. They were 1st on the PK compared to the Leafs being last this year and they were 2nd in goals against, a category in which the Leafs were also last. If your players are just plain bad defensively then there's no way you can make them great all of a sudden in your first year
i'm mystified as to how you can tell, as a fan, what is and what isn't ron wilson's fault (apparently, nothing is)...analysts at the beginning of the year predicted toronto's defense would be good because wilson set that as his main goal and they did have, from most people's evaluation, a decent defensive line-up...when that didn't work, he resorted to "run and gun" hockey where he would just try to outscore the opponent...i respect your opinion, but you pretend to know a lot more than you do.
So you're saying a coach going from 1st to last in the two major defensive categories has nothing to do with the change of players? Your team can't be good if your players aren't. If none of your defensemen can actually play defense, and none of your goalies can actually stop anything, how is your team supposed to play good defensively? All a coach can do is coach, it's up to the players to execute (which they quite clearly failed it)
but, see how do you know none of this has to do with the coach? those players can play defense...kaberle makes boneheaded plays, but he very well can play defense...so can schenn, so can finger, they really didn't have a poor defensive team...example i can give you is the bruins...had a lot of average defensive players but b/c of the SYSTEM julien used, they were considered the "best" D team last year...how can you say for sure wilson was not partially responsible for the d's lack of good play?
Finger was injured on at least 4 occasions this year. Schenn was still a rookie and (unfortunately) made a ton of rookie mistakes. Kaberle isn't good defensively - he makes a few good players here and there but he's terrible on things like the PK. So if Finger was hurt, they were basically playing with 1 good defensive defenseman. Not exactly a defensive coach's dream. But still you can have the best defense but if your goalie isn't stopping pucks, you're doomed. Cujo, Pogge and Vesa all sucked.
The fact that one coach, who had so much more good players to work with couldn't do any better than a coach who was working with a ton of rookies and no great players (even two of the Leafs top point-getters only played half a season) shows how bad that coach is. I don't know how anyone could believe Maurice could get the Leafs out of the bottom 3 the way he coached.
ron wilson is also the guy who told reporters at the beginning of the year that he was focused on making the maple leafs a great defensive team...meanwhile, they gave up the most goals in the league...while toskala pretty much sucked, and so did pogge (gerber actually seemed to me to turn out ok for the leafs), the leafs D was just god awful...ron wilson is a good coach, but then again, he couldn't do anything with the sharks when he was with them...def has more to prove for me at least.
It's not his fault he was working with terrible defensive players. Kaberle is crap defensively, White is too small, Finger is good but he was hurt like half the year, same goes for Frogren, Van Ryn is brutal defensively, Stralman is even worse and Kubina is pretty bad. Watch how drastically they're going to improve defensively this year and on the PK. Now they have Komisarek, Exelby and solid defensive forwards like Wallin and Primeau. Toskala is healthy and Gustavsson is sick.

Ron Wilson is easily one of the top coaches in the NHL- how he kept this club out of the bottom 5 is beyond me.. Paul Maurice had way more to work with yet both coaches finished 24th in the league. Maurice had Sundin, Tucker, Wellwood, Gill Steen, Colaiacovo and McCabe. Wilson didn't have any of these players. Wilson worked with about 13 rookies this year while Maurice probably worked with 3 . Wilson had a starting goalie who was injured 90% of the year and two backups who were just terrible.
Oreskovic did a respectable job. Lucic won, but Oreskovic definately held his own. If you look closer, u can see that big Phil landed a ton of jabs while Lucic was toss bombs lol. The beginning won the fight for Milan.

You don't know shit, Booster. Boston was without Savard for almost half their games this year, and have been without Lucic even longer. They also traded away their top goal scorer from last year, and are still second in their division! And as far as fighting any of the names you mentioned, none of them would level Lucic. Milan fought Ivanans to a virtual draw as a 19 year old, although I'd give Raitis a very narrow win, and Ivanans lost his first fight in 3 years last month! Lucic owns.

He's not an "enforcer" and that's what you fail to understand. As a 20 year old, he was playing on the top line with Phil Kessel andMarc Savard. He is a power forward, which is not anything like an enforcer. Enforcers train to fight and work on virtually no other aspects of their game for any significant time. Power forwards work on their game, and what little free time they have, they can work on their fighting skills.

Not scoring that much at all with half of their starters out, but they're still in the playoff mix. Montreal is on the outside looking in. Injuries are part of hockey, but when Boston get's Savard back, they'll be ok.

Boston has the best defenseman in the NHL and the best goalie. They also had good backups in Fernandez and even Rask. They're also stacked with good defensive forwards : Bergeron, Sturm, Recchi, Kobasew, Krejci.. I wouldn't exactly call players like Wideman, Stuart, Ference or Hunwick bad defensively either. Just look at how good some of their players +/- are, pretty good at showing how solid that player is defensively. The main difference is easily goaltending though.

And the Sharks thing wasn't his fault.. Marleau, Cheechoo and Thornton were all huge playoff chokers.
You can tell how good he was defensively by looking at when he played with good players in SJ. They were 1st on the PK compared to the Leafs being last this year and they were 2nd in goals against, a category in which the Leafs were also last. If your players are just plain bad defensively then there's no way you can make them great all of a sudden in your first year

i'm mystified as to how you can tell, as a fan, what is and what isn't ron wilson's fault (apparently, nothing is)...analysts at the beginning of the year predicted toronto's defense would be good because wilson set that as his main goal and they did have, from most people's evaluation, a decent defensive line-up...when that didn't work, he resorted to "run and gun" hockey where he would just try to outscore the opponent...i respect your opinion, but you pretend to know a lot more than you do.

So you're saying a coach going from 1st to last in the two major defensive categories has nothing to do with the change of players? Your team can't be good if your players aren't. If none of your defensemen can actually play defense, and none of your goalies can actually stop anything, how is your team supposed to play good defensively? All a coach can do is coach, it's up to the players to execute (which they quite clearly failed it)

but, see how do you know none of this has to do with the coach? those players can play defense...kaberle makes boneheaded plays, but he very well can play defense...so can schenn, so can finger, they really didn't have a poor defensive team...example i can give you is the bruins...had a lot of average defensive players but b/c of the SYSTEM julien used, they were considered the "best" D team last year...how can you say for sure wilson was not partially responsible for the d's lack of good play?

Finger was injured on at least 4 occasions this year. Schenn was still a rookie and (unfortunately) made a ton of rookie mistakes. Kaberle isn't good defensively - he makes a few good players here and there but he's terrible on things like the PK. So if Finger was hurt, they were basically playing with 1 good defensive defenseman. Not exactly a defensive coach's dream. But still you can have the best defense but if your goalie isn't stopping pucks, you're doomed. Cujo, Pogge and Vesa all sucked.

The fact that one coach, who had so much more good players to work with couldn't do any better than a coach who was working with a ton of rookies and no great players (even two of the Leafs top point-getters only played half a season) shows how bad that coach is. I don't know how anyone could believe Maurice could get the Leafs out of the bottom 3 the way he coached.

ron wilson is also the guy who told reporters at the beginning of the year that he was focused on making the maple leafs a great defensive team...meanwhile, they gave up the most goals in the league...while toskala pretty much sucked, and so did pogge (gerber actually seemed to me to turn out ok for the leafs), the leafs D was just god awful...ron wilson is a good coach, but then again, he couldn't do anything with the sharks when he was with them...def has more to prove for me at least.

It's not his fault he was working with terrible defensive players. Kaberle is crap defensively, White is too small, Finger is good but he was hurt like half the year, same goes for Frogren, Van Ryn is brutal defensively, Stralman is even worse and Kubina is pretty bad. Watch how drastically they're going to improve defensively this year and on the PK. Now they have Komisarek, Exelby and solid defensive forwards like Wallin and Primeau. Toskala is healthy and Gustavsson is sick.

i hope burke gets him, i think Gustavasson will challenge Vesa for number one. Tosk will play better with Gustavasson in back up. I think Toskala will know that if he starts playing bad he could end up sitting on the bench for a few games. Even though I think Vesa will have a great season after those surgery's in the offseason.....you?

oh me too I hope we get him, for sure. and you know, I really wouldn't be surprised if he takes the #1 job at training camp. doubtful, but I think they will share the #1 job. let's also not forget Gustavsson has a guaranteed starting job elsewhere, so I don't see why he would come to TO to be a backup.
if he doesn't sign with us, reports say Gerber might come back. and he is also high calibre goalie that played really well for us. he might also sneak in on Toskala.

well Toronto finished 12 points out of 8th, without a number goalie for the second half of the year, and an inexpierenced team, it takes a good coach put them in a postion to compete even in the turn around stage. i didnt mean almost making it at the end , i meant a month or two until playoffs began they were still contending

Ron Wilson is easily one of the top coaches in the NHL- how he kept this club out of the bottom 5 is beyond me.. Paul Maurice had way more to work with yet both coaches finished 24th in the league. Maurice had Sundin, Tucker, Wellwood, Gill Steen, Colaiacovo and McCabe. Wilson didn't have any of these players. Wilson worked with about 13 rookies this year while Maurice probably worked with 3 . Wilson had a starting goalie who was injured 90% of the year and two backups who were just terrible.
