  • Emerson said he did not like the solo.He was just playing some notes, but the rest of the band said that was it. It was already down on tape.Had to live with it. Later needed the music from piano magazine to recreate. Shaking his head about it still.Interesting interview. It's on youtube.

  • Emerson once said "When I play the Lucky Man solo fans want to hear it note for note."

I guess people just want to hear what is on the record.

  • Lucky Man synth solo

  • Dio, che meraviglia!! Mentre lo ascoltavo lo fischiettavo!! B-) ...

  • to all you naysayers....he has a custom box on the modular that allows him to play it using the other keyboards but the sound is still produced by the modular. Bob Moog built him a midi box so he runs his other keyboards into " the beast". digital cannot reproduce this sound.

  • @neen070456 it's just a CV-to-MIDI converter. Bob Moog likely built his, but other manufacturers make them as well.

  • He did do the ending solo in one take. He didn't have a solo written at the time so all that was done off the cuff,it sounded great ,so they kept it. One of my all time favorites.

  • He's not playing the Moog's keyboard, because it doesn't give him the full range he needs for this particular solo. As you know, it covers several octaves. You can see the Moog keyboard in the background and it doesn't cover enough octaves for this. The two controllers he has in front of him give him the needed range. Makes me think he probably did the studio version in multiple takes. No MIDI back then.

  • @fooloof Well, the Moog CV controller keyboard is 5 octaves. And that is what he played the original solo with - very famously in one take. Since he clearly is not using even 5 octaves on his GEM controller (the bass parts played on the Yamaha piano probably come from the Studio Electronics SE-1) I think your theory is flawed.

  • @mfitz1969: Yes, I later learned that he did it in one take. So, I guess you're right.

  • just to clear something up: MIDI is a language that lets synths communicate with each other, but has NO impact on the sound. You can control the Moog with a Korg or any other synth (if MIDI is used), but the sound is coming from the Moog, not the Korg. The Korg is simply telling the Moog what notes to play, etc.

Truth be told, the synthesizer is just the box, while the keyboard is an attachment. Think of most "synths" as having built-in keyboards. But the actual sound engine is the box.

  • why is he playing on korg while he has moog modular or his just controlling his moog with that korg?

  • @lukuntri: Look at it this way, it would make ZERO sense to lug around a huge modular synthesizer and have it sitting onstage 2 feet away and then just play a copycat patch on a digital synth!

  • This makes me want to get my Mini Moog out of storage and start playing it again with all its imperfections.

  • @Ampvega: yes! take it out of storage and then sell it to me. no joke. I am looking to buy one asap.

  • Sorry guys but that was not the Moog he was using. However on the Emerson Lake 2010 he did the solo on the Monster

  • too bad that is not the moog

  • @soundchaser0 It is the Moog, he has a CV to MIDI to control it.

  • @iloverush123 --You are right it is MIDIed...but as far as a fans point of view I want to see him play the MOOG....And during the Emerson Lake tour he did actually play the Moog.

The difference to me was the wandering pitch the instrument has. So EMO can keep his MIDI I want to hear the real thing. Today the instruments are too perfect. Seeing Emerson get through a number controling that beast is much more exciting.

  • @soundchaser0 That's what I'm saying, It isn't sampled, that actually IS the Moog that's providing the lead sound. He's using that other keyboard as a controller. Other than a MiniMoog, and the Lyra, I've never seen him use another synth.

  • @iloverush123 Sorry guy but that was not the Moog he was using. However on the Emerson Lake 2010 he did the solo on the Monster

  • @ecrocker1 Whatever it is, it sounds close to the real thing.
