  • You are tone deaf woman.

  • The girl singing is either tone deaf, or she is just musically ignorant. She is pitch bending, and if that is not bad enough, she never really hits a single pitch. My best guess is that she is tone deaf. Literally speaking. Specifically speaking, she is probably tone deaf around the sound frequency of 4K hertz. The fucked up shit I see on youtube never ceases to amaze me. Good God, This woman is talking about sound frequency and she knows shit about it. Somebody stick a pole up my ass, please.

  • Uh.....?

  • i love how u talk!

    xoxo

  • Thanks!

  • flawless!!!

  • OK. You got me. What do you mean by flawless? Me? You? The world? This video? I'm smiling.

  • when i write that in a video is my highest expression of komplement, i give in you tube,it means perfekt more than perfekt, thanx for your vids, amazing one!!!

  • nice...i can hear the resonance you're experienceing...

  • Cool.

  • okay, so i LOVE singing.

i know i suck, and i know when i am not hiting the notes, like i can hear it myself, but i cant fix it...

    what do i do...?

and i can only sing low notes, how can i train my voice to be able to go a bit higher?

  • great video! how long does this usually take to make a difference in your voice if you use it once a day?

  • See my answer to your first question.

  • hi. this video seems to help, but how long does it take full effect on most people?

  • Sorry to take so long to get back to you. Major move this year for me but I am FINALLY able to start back in on helping more people with their voices. The answer to your question is that there is no set time frame for most people because everyone is different and applies themselves differently. It depends a lot on how much time you put in and what your mindset is when you sing or practice. Mindset is probably 90% of the issue.

  • is it true if your not good at singing you can get better?

  • I think it's true. Learning canbe hard and tiresome, but if you really keeeeeeeep on going you'll start hearing results. It's kind of funny because it does something with your body.

  • is it true if your bad at singing you can get better?

  • Sorry to take so long to reply (I had a big move this year) but it IS TRUE that you can get better. Don't give up on yourself or your voice.

  • excellent thank you.

  • This video is great, but i only feel the vibration near the top of my mouth, like on the roof of my mouth is that good?

and I plan on taking singing lessons in about 5 months, is there anything you suggest I should look for in a teacher? I'm a complete beginner. I mean is there a certain kind of teacher I should look for?

OH AND! Is seltzer water okay for my voice? I was thiking the fizzyness would soothe my throat when I sing.

  • vibration on the roof of your mouth is good. You'll feel it more in other places too as you work at it. Most important in a teacher is how they sing and how they teach then how comfortable you feel with him or her. Lots of people set themselves up as voice teachers and may sing well but haven't a clue as to how to teach. Your voice is a unique instrument. There's not another like it in the world, so be careful with who you choose. Check out local resources and find out about their reputations.

  • thank you so much :D

I'll keep checking in on your videos until I can actually get some lessons in January.

    They're really helpful!

  • I sure apologize for taking so long to get back to you. I made a huge move this year and it threw everything off for me. But it also allowed me to re-focus and get back to you all. Keep tuned...I'm still here and moving forward to help everyone more.

  • Seltzer water not much recommended. Warm herbal teas or just plain water is better.

  • Thank you so much ... You are wonderful !

    Greetings from France !

  • Merci! Trust these are helping you!

  • It is normal that I even feel my teeth vibrating when I do the "mmm" part? Lol, it feel so strange

  • Yay! If you feel your teeth vibrating you are doing it exactly right! Congrats!

  • aaww :D thanks teacher!

  • when i do the toungue exercise, it feels like my jaw is tightening up, is that okay?

  • Ideally, you never want the jaw to tighten up more than is natural as when you are speaking without thinking about the fact that you're using your voice to speak. However, when you first start doing the tongue exercise, it's possible that you will feel a difference in the muscles of your face because you're working on something you may not have paid attention to before. Keep at it and see if the tight feeling goes away.

  • Thank you, Joy. I love your attitude--you want us to not only sing as best we can, but also not damage our vocal cords. Most singing teachers wouldn't do anything for free, and you're a champion for hading us your expertise. I enjoyed this warm-up, and see how beneficial the aw sound is over the ahh.

    Thanks a lot!

P.S. How does one not get addicted to resonance if it pumps endorphins through? I want to hum all day long now. :D

  • sing baby sing ...please put some advice how to do a vibrato..

  • It's more like a warm up exercise, kind of like when a person stretches before running a race or doing strenuous exercise.

  • At the pitch this is at should a male baritone be singing this full voice or falsetto?

  • Baritone range would normally fall between G2-G4, so if you sing this an octave lower than I'm singing it, it shouldn't be a problem for you.

  • is it possible to sing it an octave lower?

    I actually couldn't

    ^^

    thanks for the video

  • sing it where it's comfortable for you....

  • thank you^^

    I love your video

could you please post something about voice health??

  • Oops, forgot to mention that this shouldn't need falsetto.

  • Excellent exercise! Simple and Effective (right? my english is not very good). This video help me warm my voice quickly.

    Thanks. Happy New Year

  • hi i want to know why i cant sing nina high piched woice when i do this excersize, like "oohhh" like that. why?

  • Hard to tell without hearing or seeing you on a video. Usually, though, not being able to sing high has to do with a tight throat and tongue creating too much tension around the vocal cords so that they can't vibrate freely.

  • hi I like singers like axl rose(guns roses) and Sebastian bach(skid row)and i was wondering how to make my voice sound more like theres? I now there voices are raspy but im not sure even how to my my voice raspy lol any how if you could help it would be great

  • Raspiness is done by tightening the throat area, almost as if you are choking with sound coming through. I don't recommend it because it puts so much pressure on the vocal cords that it can cause serious problems down the line and you only get 1 voice in life. However, if you really want to do that kind of singing, try what I suggested above, although I disclaim any responsibility for what happens to your vocal cords. :)

  • thanks so much, I love your videos. YOu have such a unique approach!

  • Glad to help.

  • Excellent. thankyou for your tips and effort into making this.

  • You betcha.

  • oooh! this helps me a lot! 'cause I don't have money to pay for a teacher :/

    this is the best :D

i have a question... how do i get a sound in the voice like Chad from nickelback? it's a different technique? it' sounds a little

what do you think? Anyone can sing? i don't like my voice :/ when a hear me singing i have shame of myself

PS: As you have noticed, english is not my primary language :$

    Thanx a lot

    Rod

  • Thanks for your encouraging words and never ever be ashamed of yourself. The fact that you have the courage to sing and to write about your voice on this site makes you brave! I think you're the 1st person to write to me from Algeria. The Nickelback sound is a raspy one and can cause vocal damage if you're not careful. Yes, almost anyone can learn to sing better.

  • hi, thanks for the warmups, haha . They really help alot.yup anyway was just wondering whether is it normal for a male vocalist to have airy voice rather than a strong "round" bassy voice

  • Totally normal. Just as some women have heavy chest voices and others have light lyric voices. some men have heavy bass voices and others have high lyric voices. Airy is a different quality of the voice but is more associated with the lyric voice.

  • Hi! thanks for the videos!! they are alot of help and i really appreciate it! i was just wondering if there were any specific foods/drink that might help the voice or any foods/drinks i should avoid that might be bad for singing??

  • Glad to hear the vids are helping! I think I need to write an article about foods for the voice. Meanwhile, lots of fruits and veggies, of course, are good. Protein from fish, poultry, seeds and nuts are great. Avoid soft drinks and too much wine or alcohol and cut back on milk products. Of course, some of this depends on your particular metabolism.

  • Alot of people say you should not sing threw your throat and or your nose. Im not sure if i do or not, but do you have any tips for me to try out? I also need help on scaling, ive been doing this excirsise for about 3 days now, but my voice still seems to crack a bit, please help!?

  • Go to my site and use the google search tool there and type in "starting the tone." Read the article and check out the other articles I've read too. This will help. The crack makes me think that this exercise might be too high or too low for you. Try singing it without the viceo.

  • hi this really helps. i dont dont do it alot, because im busy. how often should i do it?

P.S. does this help with vibrato?

  • Glad to help. Do it as often as you can. The more, the better. Yes, it helps with vibrato because vibrato happens naturally as you learn how to relax and not push your voice while singing.

  • Great lessons! I'm going to practice these exercises several times a day:) thank you!

  • Glad to hear it! Don't forget to read the articles on my website and use the other resources there!

  • Hi, i love watching your videos, they are really helpful.

when i sing, i follow the tips that people have given me; relax my throat/mouth muscles etc, use my diafram and the tounge positions etc. However, when i sing, my voice is quite low. i mean im a 16 yr old boy so my voice is deep anyway but i want to be able to sing a little higher comfortably without my jaw muscles tensing up. Any tips? am i doing it wrong? is it just not right for someone like me to be able to sing high pitches? Thanks

  • Everyone can sing high pitches according to where their middle voice is. Think of the pitches as being high or low according to where you sing comfortably. Everyone has a high and low limit. As you go higher, keep your tongue touching the inside of your lower lip, over your teeth. Don't let it pull back as you go up. Use a mirror.

  • I think is great keep on posting, you are even better teacher that the one i have jaja

  • Thanks so much!

  • Great lessons, your a life saver, really!

Because nova days you have to pay for a good teacher. Thank you so much!

    Have a good day!

  • Thanks. I'm trying hard to find ways to help more.

  • if i want to sing in a higher tones than the ones you make us practice here what should i practice?

  • Use the same lesson but keep going up the scale. Also, because of the overwhelming support for what I'm doing and the amount of questions I get, I'm putting together an affordable subscription based service and am polling everyone to see if they're interested in getting more in-depth help that way. What do you think?

  • i love what you do, truely you are a great person, i loe you, its very kind and helpful that you upload this kind of videos.

    take care!

  • Thank you so much. It really means a lot to me that you appreciate what I'm doing.

  • Hi,

There is something about you and your voice that is so soothing! Your voice has that tremendous depth and resonance and most importantly, it is so spiritually uplifting! I can only pray to God that he showers you with infinte grace and love. This is straight from the heart!

  • Thanks so much for your prayers! I truly appreciate them. May you be blessed for your kindness and I hope that you will share all of this with your friends and family. Enjoy!

  • OH THAT KIND OF MADE ME DIZZY WHEN I WAS DOING THOSE EXCERSICES. is that normal?

  • Totally normal. After you do them for awhile you shouldn't get dizzy anymore unless there's some other medical problem, but there usually isn't.

  • Hi Singbabysing! My condolences, I'm sorry to hear about your mother.

I was wondering, what is the first thing a person who wants to learn to sing can do to help them?

I mean if that person sounds like a shrieking bird--the minute they open their mouth to sing?

  • Thanks. My mother's passing taught me a lot about life and I'm grateful she's at peace now. A shrieking bird is usually scared. Tension in the vocal cords makes the voice shriek. Learning to use your voice to sigh out the tension helps. The "ng" sound can release the tension if you do it VERY softly & slowly.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that. You have my condolenses.

  • Thanks.

  • Thank you so much!!!!!

Are there certain things that one can do to learn to sing without a musical background?

If you think you are tone deaf, can you learn to pick up tone?

  • You're very welcome. The answer to both questions is a resounding yes!

  • The first time i did your exercises, I sang with a vibrato, but it happened only ones, and it was so great... I want it to come back.

  • Congratulations! Don't give up. If you did it once, there's a memory stored in your brain about how to do it again. Just keep trying and it will come back!

  • whooooa trippy.

  • Have fun with it and the others!

  • Hi, its me again! Well, after doing vocalises from you and my voice teacher from awhile, I have been getting better. I'm thinking about recording a song so perhaps you can hear what I sound like and what problems I have. Also, I'm wondering, what kind of vocalise should I do in order to get a beltier, louder sound without forcing it from my throat?

  • Belting is a technique that "forces" the chest voice into the head voice and needs to be approached with caution and careful guidance, otherwise it can easily cause vocal damage. I'd highly suggest getting your regular teacher to help you.

  • Is this comment for me? I dont know if its this one or the one below...anyway. Belting is that complicated? I never knew that, I thought it was just singing really loud and in the upper registar in your chest voice.

  • Yes, it's for you as an answer to your question about getting a "beltier louder sound" without forcing from your throat.

There's a good link at Wikipedia about belting. YouTube won't let me post it, but go to Wikipedia's site and type in Belt (music).

  • Oh my goodness I CLEARLY remember posting a comment but it didnt go on for some reasons...anyways I was saying that I read the Wikipedia site about belting like more than 5 times. So I suppose if what wikipedia is saying is true, then belting is basically singing in the upper register in chest voice but still keep the larynx in place(Like not let it raise or drop dramatically) and relaxed. And if that is true, the vocalises/exercises i should be doing is the breath support ones?

  • I'd do the breathing ones, the tongue and the silly spinning siren (very slowly). If you do the siren slowly, you'll be more aware of what's going on inside you as you go up in pitch.

  • What should go on inside of me as I go up in pitch? I just feel like I need more breath, that's all.

  • Well what should go on when I go up in pitch? I still feel my larynx going up...any tips on keeping it in place?

  • Keeping the larynx low, as you already understand, is the goal. One way that I've found that works is to exercise the middle part of the tongue, separately from singing, bringing it down, then up, down, then up. This is hard to describe and better to demonstrate or show in a lesson. Sorry I can't do that for you.

  • But how is exercising the tongue going to help the larynx? They're so far apart....and are you talking about the tongue video?

  • Yes, they're far apart but they are connected by various muscles. The article I'm referring to is on my website, not this YouTube site. I can't provide you with a link because YouTube won't allow it. Look under my profile and you'll see the addy for my "new site update." Scroll down the right side of the page and read that article.

  • Alright thank you. Why dont you make a video of that exercise that youre talking about?

  • Sorry to take so long to respond. My mother passed away in the past week so I'll not be able to do too much for awhile.

I'll post a video or email to let everyone know when I can help again. Thanks for your understanding.

  • Aww I'm so sorry. Then I'll be considerate and not bother you.

  • No bother....thanks.

  • Hy there I would like to send my condolences to you and your family wishing you soon recovery I know how it like to lost someone that you love and care i hope god will straighten you all you such a wonderful parson god bless you.

  • Thanks so much for your kindness and the blessing.

  • thank you!! but i sound so flat XD

you have so muc virabto an tone.. XD~your so good =]

  • Thanks. I had to work at it too, so don't give up and keep practicing and reading all you can about how to use your voice on my website.

  • i am 14 years old,and i might be joining a band and id be the lead singer.I have been in choir for 2 yrs and I made honors choir in 8th grade. I can sing in a choir voice but I am trying to sing in a different way.I am an ok singer but i need to be better. How long do you think it would take me to become a good singer if I practice almost all of your video's twice daily..and some more..because the band will be starting in around two months, and I want to be a better singer by then.

  • I think doing the videos twice a day is a great idea. There's another thing I suggest, and that is to do my "travel breathing" exercise, which is a different application of the slow leaky tire. The article about how to do it is on the new site redesign page of my website. Also, read the article, "Starting the Tone" and as many of the other ones as you can. They can all be useful.

  • MY HONORS music class for next year its select and im up against lots of great altos chances are slim but im going to give it my best shot have to do scales ( do re mi) in our school pattern and a solo so im doing an alto version of "Castle on a Cloud" from Les Miserable

  • Ah...good. I like your attitude! Good luck and give it all you've got!

  • this is great! I am a vocalist and this helps me sound better and my confidence, this will help my auditions out next week too :)

  • Cool. What are you auditioning for?

  • thank you I am getting so much better at singing lately ( as my teachers say) and this helps me out on congested days :)

  • Great to hear it! Thanks.

  • Thanks for answering the question. There is another question i would like to ask. I am able to control my breathing in lower notes songs, but when it reaches higher notes, i tend to force out causing sore throat problems. How do i improve on this?

  • This happens because a longer length of the cords stay together for higher notes so it can put more stress on the muscles around the cords if you don't compensate. Keep your chin down, don't just out your jaw and make sure your tongue is not pulling into the back of your throat. Do the tongue exercise with a mirror and be sure to study all the articles I've written to help you understand the muscles better.

  • ooh i love this ^^

    your soo good!!

    your my hero ^^

but my voice sounds flat.. its not vibrating. i think that is my issue ^^

Yay! thank you so much =D

  • Thanks so much. By flat do you mean flat in pitch or flat in resonance or vibration quality? Tightness in the throat and tongue will cause all that. Read my articles at my website for help. Everything about the voice has to do with the inside of your body and your thoughts. Read Starting the Tone on the 1st page of my redesign pages.

  • im not rly sure. Actually its vibrating quality

    ok thnk u ^^

  • OK. Vibrating quality is definitely impacted by tightness of muscles in the larynx, tongue and jaw areas. Keep me posted about your progress.

  • so i just have to practice ro relax and everything?

  • That's the way to start, yes.

  • Hi i would just like to say that its really great that you put an effort in sharing your knowledge with people on the internet. Even though my singing is on the lower plan if you understand me, its great to listen to the videos.

By the way i have a question for you. I hope you know the answer :)

What harm do smoking do to your voice, and will my learning in singing be harder?

i have heard about smoke burnished voices but i do not know much about the effects.

  • Smoking causes irritation around the tissues in & around your vocal cords, which causes you to push or force the sound out. This further irritates the vocal cords. I encourage you to consider the other problems that smoking causes & find a way to stop for the sake of your health. You'll have a longer life and save money too!

  • Hi~ I have a problem with this exercise. When I going further towards the third scale, I have some sort of light ache on my throat. May i know whats the reason?

  • Tension causes this. Also, if the notes feel too high for you, try singing an octave lower.

  • Wow you have a lovely voice :D

  • Thanks so much. I hope that I can be of service to you with your own voice too! :)

  • thanks, but my voice is too out of control, but yeah, I'm listening and watching al your videos, they're wonderful :D I also went on your website and its really cool :D

  • Thanks.....but I do hope you'll keep working with the videos so that you can improve your voice. There's a not a soul I have met who can't get better! If you have any questions at all, please ask and I'll do my best to answer them. :)

  • thanks so much. Its great that you can share your knowledge with the world

  • You're the kind of person that's worth sharing that knowledge with! Thanks.

  • Thanks :D

  • so can i practise vocalization after the breathing exercise

  • Absolutely!

  • i do slow leaky tire and i release the air very slowly and release the air for 0:01:25 and breathe in again and do the same thing, i use stop watch to see long i release the air and while im doing it my breathe goes longer am i doing right, i practice 20 minutes a day everyday, so i can do the vibrato now?

  • Great work on the slow leaky tire. When you ask about vibrato do you mean the resonance lesson?

  • THANKS a lot for sharing this, MISSY. I really APPRECIATED it. I am Terry from Malaysia, just BEginner only to learn sing lately start at 22 years old. After i have completed and known the BREATHING. Then, how can I CONTROL my VOICE or TONE???Thanks alot!!!May GOD BLESS U!

  • Thanks, Terry. Have you read my "starting the tone" article on my website yet? If not, read that first.

  • YEA, check my video too, and tell me how i can get better, && what i can change. thnx for posting all these vids, it really helps!!!

  • I'm happy to help! I'll tell you the same thing...breath control1

Do the dog pant and leaky tire exercises everyday, several times a day and increase the power of your diaphragm. Also, read my articles online at my website and never ever ever stop singing!

  • wow.....yourr an inspiration! Im only 14 and i really want to become a singer.

Please watch my One video and see what I can Improve on.

    Thanks xxxxxxx

  • Thanks! Listened to "...touch a girl." You've got a good ear, which means your pitch is clear and you're able to be very real with your voice. This is good. If I were you, I'd work on breath control first, building up your diaphragm muscle and learning how to let out air really slowly so that you can hold onto a tone longer. Also, read my articles on breathing on my website and stay in touch!

  • Thank you very much for posting this :-). I have a music teacher but I'm always looking for new ways to practice.

  • Glad to help. Be sure to visit my website and read my articles too. There's lots of useful information there.

  • I am not using my whistle register when I hit it. But i was wondering if you knew any warms ups that could help me hit it faster. I do Trills which is what my teacher told me to do but they didn't work to well.

  • I've found that arpeggios work the best for this sort of thing.

  • I just want to say that your videos are great and I enjoy them a lot. I have a question about my voice. The highest note I have hit is a E7 but it takes a while for my voice to warm up to hit it. Do you have any advice for me?

  • E7? That's as high as a piano keyboard goes! Are you using a whistle tone technique?

  • Glad to help. I checked Singorama. It looks, uh, sort of legit, but I've seen lots of sites like this designed just to sell something. There are books out that show you how to use red print & bright yellow highlighting & certain hype wording. I'm always suspicious of this type of ad, especially for singing. She might be legit but there's no way to tell without buying her program. Notice that there are no other pages to help you learn. I guess you have to judge for yourself.

  • Tnx a Lot! This really helped me! I was wonder though what you think of Singorama by Emily Mander?

  • I read a book about singing and it told me to keep my larynx low and my soft palate high. I have a hard time keeping my larynx low and I was wondering if this is a crucial part of singing. I know this is not related to the video but I felt the need to ask. Thank you!

  • Yes, it's important, but I've found in myself that I sometimes THINK about technique too much rather than FEELING what's really going on inside of me. If you focus on relaxing your jaw and sending the tone towards the hard palate with a feeling like yawning, this may help. Also, read my tongue article on my site.

  • Well doing this exercise helps me to relax my voice a lot more. Im not puting any tension on my throat or jaw watsoever like you said to me last time...but im still singing straight tone.

  • Good to hear this one is helping you to relax more when you sing. Be patient with the straight tone. When I was learning to get resonance in my head, it took me quite a bit of time and effort, but the rewards were worth it! Never give up!

  • well, do you think it will be possible to sing with a vibrato by September? Or does it usually take years?

  • It's hard to say how long it takes. What's happening in September? Why the pressure?

  • Well, I'm a freshman in highschool right now, and I'm turning sophomore by September. As sophomores, a lot of people will audition get casted in ensemble for musicals at my school. But I will never get casted if I dont have a vibrato. In fact, I will never even get called back. Musicals are a REALLY big part of my school so I really do want to be in one someday. :)

  • You could learn enough by September to feel more confident in trying out, but you would need to work hard with a teacher. If I had my online lessons set up before then, you may want to start with them, but it's difficult to say exactly when I will have them available. Meanwhile, have you gone to my website and started reading articles there, and are you doing my exercises daily?

  • Yes I am doing your exercises daily. Its rather helpful, I have to say.

  • I'm so happy to hear they are working for you. Have you been able to read my articles and make use of the other resources on my website?

  • Yes, actually, Ive read every single article on your website that has to do with singing.

  • Ah, good. I'll keep adding articles so keep checking out the website. Hopefully, I'll have the online lessons available soon.

  • That sounds fancy. I love your articles, they are so clear and easy to understand.

  • Aw, thanks! I'll keep working on more of them.

  • Yeah, I'm always looking forward to new articles and things like that. I haven't seen one in a while though.

  • Thanks...I'll work on that!

  • Well, I'll be waiting and I'm sure many others will too. Perhaps, you should write about my favorite subject.

  • :) Vibrato or musicals?

  • Vibrato in musical theatre style. Like a belt out vibrato. Which I dont have. Haha, I'm so glad that somebody knows my favorite topic to talk about.

  • Ah....I hope you'll be patient about the vibrato thing. It's a tough one to write about....but I'm still considering it....thanks

  • True, I have been taking voice lessons and I can hear a little vibrations(Probably like half a second) at the end before I let go. However, its really hard to start the vibrations in the beggining of a vowel. Why is that?

PS: I will be patient but its just so frustrating when youre sooo close to the goal but is still missing that last step!!!

  • Good to hear you're discovering little vibrations. With the vowels, it's the same old thing: tension. Mostly tension in the vocal cords themselves, holding back the tone (usually from fear) then pushing to get it out instead of gently releasing it and letting take on its own power.
