I think that you asked your question in a bad way. You should have asked us how much would we be willing to pay for obtainable form regular play items and not just virtual items because the driving force behind the two markets is too different to be compared let alone be grouped together. If an item can be found in game, even if there is a small chance to find it most people would say that they would not pay for it, however if an item has limited quantities it's a completely different story.

I'm willing pay $0 on any thing in game. Personally I'm kinda pissed about the AH feature of D3. I think it's going to take away from the game but only time will tell.
When it comes to free games like League of Legends I'll spend money in it because eventually it would equate to the real price of the game. I have no problem doing so because if a company gives us a free long lasting game that you have an option to pay nothing is really saying something and I may be a sucker, but they get my support. Nothing is better than free entertainment.
I played the SWTOR beta and loved it but can't bring myself in this economy to pay out $60 for a game then have to fork over another $15 every month I want to play. If I could download the game for free and only have to pay for game time I would do that.
15box a month for a game you use so many hours.. Better pick the best game for you regardless of price because that time should be more worth than 15box a month.
there is a game called conqueronline , and with about 50-60 servers there is at least 20 people on each server that spend 333+ dollers every month on the game . so im thinking diablo 3 is going to be my second job .
I don't like the idea of the real money ah, why would anyone wanna waste money on gear thats gonna eventually get outdated. And as for the SWTOR sub, it's def stopping me from trying it because I sunk to much money into WoW over the years to start another sub mmo. I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2!!
And I assume you don't have rent or bills to pay. Yes, $15 doesn't seem like a lot, but that's still $15 monthly that could be used towards other things. If you decide to play the game for an entire year, that's roughly $180 spent. Counting the additional $60 for purchase, that would be $240 spent on one game.
@onlyrealnumber So you don't think gaming is a hobby but some necessary thing you just have to do so you want to get away with as little cost as possible? Monthly sub from game is one of the cheapest and most timekilling hobbies.
@Ryndika No, I think that the industry is changing and consumers are wising up to the fact that monthly fees are no longer justified. Especially with the surplus of F2P games out there. It also has nothing to do with whether gaming is a hobby or not. If an option exists where I don't have to spend as much money to get the same thing or similar, I will take that option if the product is good enough quality. That's just good money sense. I'd be happier with multiple games at $240 than one game.
@onlyrealnumber You know that not everyone think like that? Most of my friends don't want to touch F2Ps because you are not equal to everyone else.
I was refering to a hobby in a way that objectively WoW is better than random F2P chinese grindgame. You can get quality with money and more choices too.
force only in korea japan or china would someone spend 16k on an item, in europe uk us nobody will, diablo 3 items will be a few dollars if that there will be simply too many users trying to make a profit from grinding!
Only few will pay for SWTOR's subscription, especially if they are (were) WoW players . No reason to pay a monthly fee for such a poor content . Its better to wait for SWTOR to become F2P , cuz I am sure it will ... :)
I played lotro for 2 years then left. When it became F2P i played it again for 6 months. I payed more then I had payed for those 2 years, even though it was "free". There is nothing such as FREE. people should realise its much cheaper by paying 10-15 € per month then having it F2P. even though devs say : you can "earn" everything ingame without buying it, its true, but the amount of stuff you need to do is so unfair so you just get out yr creditcard. AAA Games should never be "free" .
SWORE-the subscription is definitely what is holding me back. I love star wars and would definitely play is if I didn't feel like i was getting taken advantage of for liking a franchise that I've grown up with.
I won't play another "pay to play" mmo game. I might pickup GW2, but currently playing LoL (and I have spent over $100 on that game) and I will play a ton of D3, along with Firefall. I think the difference is, I don't regret any of my purchases on LoL, however I do feel like I wasted a lot of money playing WoW. If the content is good and worth paying for then I will CHOOSE to spend money on it. But if the content is crap then you shouldn't be forced to pay for it if you don't want it.
As a gamer I prefer a subscription model. Like you said, Force, it is very easy to spend far over $15/mo in microstransactions if you are not careful. As a company, I am surprised that EA went for the subscription model. I really think they will make more as F2P. Especially if they would have gone the Guild Wars route and release yearly expansions (for full price) and plenty of fluff/time saving things that can be purchased for money.
I played Guild wars for about 5 years (on and off) and ended up paying for Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, and Eye of The North. So figure about $240/60months = $4 a month, a fee I would not mind paying for the quality of game.
Years ago since i discovered free MMOs i have never once paid for a game again..unless it was one of those one-time purchases like guild wars or diablo 2..lets face it, we will never play any one game forever unless u are a huge fan of it, there are always newer and better games every year..i do occasionally spend some money for games but rarely only if i really get into it..So so many great games out there just waiting to be played. if i spend too much on one game ill feel i "have" to play it
Subscriptions, they are fine. They are cheap and I feel they keep balance. When a company relies on micro transactions the people who buy things that way become more powerful than the people that play for free.
The subscription way keeps everyone on an even playing field. The best way is a sub + a restricted free version (like WoW's trial).
The auction for the sword was a charity event so that is a huge factor (otherwise I doubt it would have sold at all seeing how the game isn't out).
I have played wow since it was launched and i have always been against and will always be against any kind of out side of game purchase .. ie items gear wow gold etc. I think that people that do buy the 3rd party stuff aren't being true to the game however i play for the pure enjoyment of seeing my accomplishments and gear from my own efforts. just My Opinion. but there it is
I have no interest in hand held games. I'd rather just play mobile games since I have to have a phone anyway. No point in spending all that money on a hand held imo.
It's awesome that people want to spend money on items I aquire so I can make a little bit on the side for doing something I love, playing games. I would never buy boosts like extra XP, gear, gold etc. It ruins my gameplay and by buying this you skip a couple of steps and thus shorten the gameplay period. I do love vanity items though. :P
Person A plays the game for 10 hours and gets the best gear. Now what?
Person B buys the best gear and is done in 10 minutes. Now what?
I would buy SWTOR if it wasn't a subscription, I have spend way too much money on WoW and I'm not willing to go through that again. Some time ago I thought that the subscription fee keeps at least some of the idiots away from he game and prevent stupid and immature behaviour online but last 2 years in WoW proved me wrong. So, if I have to be harassed in the game then at least I don't want to pay for that.
Diablo RMAH - I wont and I wouldn't spend any many in there but I'm not against it.
I found after stopping playing wow, I was spending more money buying games then paying a monthly fee....imo so long as a game gets good and relatively quick updates on a sub based system its well worth it. worst thing about a one off payment game is a lot of them will only get bug fix patches and thats about it, which kills longevity
...that guy w/ the cash clealry didn't play diablo 2. Because of All the chinese hackers selling epic gear for 2 dollars blizzard now sells gear them self. Atleast dont buy diablo gear it ruins the game
The subscription is most definitely keeping me from purchasing SWTOR. After throwing away money for WoW for 6 years only to get banned for something I didn't do really pissed me off. So you can see how this affects my view on subscription based games, so GW2 is going to have to suffice for the moment.
As for paying for in-game items, I'd be glad to support the company if the game doesn't have a monthly fee (GW2, Diablo 3), but vanity items in SWTOR or WoW? fuck off.
I would never play games with monthly subscriptions. I just can't afford such things. Besides, I don't think I could play any game enough to justify paying any monthly fee to play it. Not to mention I just cant fathom why I would pay monthly for any game after paying for the game itself. That is just plain wrong on so many levels. Why anyone would pay is beyond me. I don't think anyone could justify to me why paying is worth it.
@BraveOneGamer Sounds fair enough. Although i will say that in my time with WoW, i probably saved alot of money with it. At aprox 14 dollars a month, and i wasn't buying a new 60 dollar game ever 2 to 3 weeks... It can actually be cheaper for how much game play you can get out of it. It's really inexpensive. The cost of a good meal? Less than the cost of a really good meal. :)
I was once a massive fan of Asian F2P MMORPG's, and It was common for people to spend over $20,000 a month on those games, and that's not an exaggeration. Usually it's daddys credit card which funds it too... A father has a high rolling job but spends no time with his kid so he thinks giving his kid 20,000 dollars a month is a substitute for love. Anyway... My personal feeling of buying gear on those games is it takes away from the fun and longevity of the game... and the pride you feel.
$5 top for a virtual item. Anything more then that, is a waste. Play the game for fun. If you want something epic, and take the game very seriously, aquire it legitimately.
16k for such a thing seems pretty ridiculous...but you know what? A Magic The Gathering Legacy legal deck can cost 2k dollars, Mafia Wars on facebook can feed of thousands of dollars in the course of play, and I am pretty sure peeps will pay crazy money on D3 auctions based on the rarity of certain top-wanted gear. Whatever it is...hobbies cost money and I guess it justifies the cash-flow :)
I really don't have a problem with subscriptions. In fact I prefer them to fee-to-play, because to me free-to-play games feel chopped up most of the time and I feel limited because of this. I much more prefer the subscription model as it allows me to do whatever I want and I know for a fact that there won't be any locked out features I have to purchase.
As far as spending money on items, none. The only way I will use D3s RMAH is if I sell anything on it and get the Battle.net currency that way.
Even in Diablo 2, there were some really crazy payments made on items. Keep in mind the world is divided into two economic ranges pretty much and the top upper doesn't see 16k as much money at all if it gets them something they want.
I have played some free-to-play games and in all honesty that is a bit of a lie, none of those types are really free-to-play unless you want to spend absurd amounts of time getting the same things that people that spend money in the game would get without that much time. Its an oxymoron that free-to-play because most times the people who would play that game can end up spending more money on micro transactions then they would on just a monthly sub. I personally rather $15 a month for whole game.
@MrSmithwayne This is more true of Asian F2P games then it is of Western F2P games... for example... League of Legends is F2P and to be honest, riot points don't really get you that far compared to how much they cost... In an asian F2P though, $5 can give you a massive advantage over free players, and once people acquire that advantage, they get addicted to it and start paying $10, $20... $50... and it gets out of control.
@MrSmithwayne I think the key to enjoying "f2p" is just setting a spending limit, such as the cost of a normal game/budget game/15$ a month etc.
Ofcourse, that's only worth it if the game is actually as good as those other games you're comparing it to. f2p is more like "pay what you like, but you will pay at some point" tbh 15$ a month in a f2p gets you a lot
Personally I've never been in a rush to get fancy items, it's always a bit overwhelming having everything unlocked at the start..
@MrSmithwayne how can you say $15 a month for a whole game when you need to grind for hours on end to achieve some pathetic little item to upgrade your character. Aren't you the perfect customer.
@FarligaBjorn Not true. If you spend money on Riot Points you can buy all the runes you need in an instant for your build whereas grinding enough currency to otherwise buying all that would take weeks.
Not to knock anything you've said because its true but there is one free to play game where micro transactions don't matter. World of tanks. The only perks for spending money are in essence speeding up gameplay. More exp and more credits with premium tanks. Halfway through the tank tier I have yet to really feel a need to go premium. The only issue with the game is that 4-5th tier tanks often have to fight 8th tier tanks which makes things a bit stressful.
@MrSmithwayne I agree. Although I don't like subscriptions. If it was subscriptions on most of the games I probably wouldn't ever try them out. But as you imply, free-to-play doesn't really mean free. You don't have to spend money, but say that you get limited inventory space of 10 slots... and u can unlock 50 with money... Obviously you will only experience frustration in such a game. Or mounts/upgrades that costs much money/resources and they can fail too! Not really "free".
@MrSmithwayne Also, people always forget TIME spent in a game. Time is actually money in free-to-play games. If you spend time in a game as a "free user", other players (especially those who pay) have someone to play with! Without people to play with, or to kill, what fun are those items you bought. Even people, who don't spend money in a game, contributes a lot to the game.
@MrSmithwayne It is free to play.. the graphics is free to play for those games that have F2P on them.. if there's no free to play, you'd be playing tetris game by now.. lol
I personally wouldn't spend real money on an item for a character in Diablo 3 because most of the enjoyment comes from finding that good gear yourself, not buying from an auction house for a certain amount of money.
Also the pay to play thing does hold me back from the Star Wars mmo. I like how guild wars runs there model of the mmo and I am definitely looking forward to playing Guild Wars 2!
@TheRay5885, GW2 is gonna have mini-expansions which, in the end, will cost almost just as much as a monthly fee game. Just thought you should know that you're gonna pay more than just once, if you're gonna play GW2.
@sweou That's a good point, but buying those expansions will be optional and not having them shouldn't impact the base play too much. I thought the first GW was great but I didn't play it enough to buy any of the expansions and could pick it up and put it down as I wanted. But if I'm really into GW2 I'll buy the expansions... without having to look at my schedule to guess whether or not I'll be able to play enough to justify the cost in that month.
@sweou I don't mean to intend this question to be rude/accusing, but how do you know this? If show i really would like to see the article. I myself am a completely devoted fan of 5 years for guild wars and have the "GW2" site as my home page. One of the most important factors is that its always had that one based price. Of the many articles ive also read on that site, i want to say i faintly recall them stating its was FTP and not going to do anything like that. Thanks :D
@MrThebigcheese125, One of ArenaNets guys, the Lead Designer I think, has stated that they would have mini-expansions that would cost money. Mini-expansions = not the same as patches. There might only come very few out and I don't think it will be for a large fee, but people tends to think that "No monthly fee = F2P", and that's not entirely true in GW2's case. Still looks good tho. and cheap when you think of the quality of the game.
@MrThebigcheese125, btw. I meant that the price was cheap, when you think about how good the game is, just to make sure that my last sentence doesn't get misunderstood, cause I would've misunderstood it, if it were me who were reading the comment.
@sweou It'll have expansions, yes, but if you think there will be "mini-expansions" costing 9~15$ every month, you're wrong. There's going to be free updates with content, too. Not to mention even pay to play MMOs have costly expansions? Heard of WoW? It costs about 100$ to get every expansions pack, and that only includes a free month of pay.
I don't have a credit card...or a computer. But when I did have a computer, it was always a buy once and then play till the cd broke. And force, why are you nervous about d3? You are a game reviewer...you are the sort of person who's going to be making money off d3. Think of it a an extra bonus every month...
Personally I don't like monthly fees, wich make me intressted in Guild Wars 2. As with the guy that spend 16k on a freaking sword. I would never buy a viritual item for real money.
I download pirated games and would never spend money on games, at least not in my country, here is a luxury to be a "real" game buying gamer, as for RMAH i would use it to make money not to spend it, and i am a huge diablo fan so i would buy Diablo 3 although its a bit disappointing
I'd rather have a monthly fee than an overpowered cash shop where you can buy items/upgrade to win. Guild Wars 1 did it right, just have costumes and character slots on there, nothing that changes to game.
Have no problems at all with subscription fees, they are so low anyway which makes it cheap entertainment.
If you play at least 2-3 hours every month and enjoy it then it's a cheaper way of entertainment than say going to the movies.
That said I won't be trying SW:TOR since I have no interest in it what so ever, will continue my WoW subscription for a while though and most likely try MOP when it's released.
i think subscriptions need to go away, a lot of people are more casual players these days-- and while I don't consider myself a part of that category, I do have less time these days for gaming and subscriptions make choosing a game more difficult.
I dislike subscription fee games and it's the only reason I'm not playing SWTOR. I could understand more if I could pay a subscription fee every month but not have to pay an upfront fee, but I'm really not willing to pay both.
Having a sub fee makes me feel obligated to play the game. I do have willpower, but when I chose not to play the game and focus on other things my money is going to waste. I want to be able to take a week or two break from a game and not have to spend money for it.
when people spend rediculous amounts of money at auctions, the auctions generaly are for charity

Ryndika 1 month ago
@Ryndika No, I think that the industry is changing and consumers are wising up to the fact that monthly fees are no longer justified. Especially with the surplus of F2P games out there. It also has nothing to do with whether gaming is a hobby or not. If an option exists where I don't have to spend as much money to get the same thing or similar, I will take that option if the product is good enough quality. That's just good money sense. I'd be happier with multiple games at $240 than one game.
onlyrealnumber 1 month ago
@onlyrealnumber You know that not everyone think like that? Most of my friends don't want to touch F2Ps because you are not equal to everyone else.
I was refering to a hobby in a way that objectively WoW is better than random F2P chinese grindgame. You can get quality with money and more choices too.
I was talking about MMO's too only.

I would never buy boosts like extra XP, gear, gold etc. It ruins my gameplay and by buying this you skip a couple of steps and thus shorten the gameplay period. I do love vanity items though. :P

Pattoe 2 months ago
$5 top for a virtual item. Anything more then that, is a waste. Play the game for fun. If you want something epic, and take the game very seriously, aquire it legitimately.
Balgore8 2 months ago
16k for such a thing seems pretty ridiculous...but you know what? A Magic The Gathering Legacy legal deck can cost 2k dollars, Mafia Wars on facebook can feed of thousands of dollars in the course of play, and I am pretty sure peeps will pay crazy money on D3 auctions based on the rarity of certain top-wanted gear. Whatever it is...hobbies cost money and I guess it justifies the cash-flow :)
cmudo18 2 months ago
I really don't have a problem with subscriptions. In fact I prefer them to fee-to-play, because to me free-to-play games feel chopped up most of the time and I feel limited because of this. I much more prefer the subscription model as it allows me to do whatever I want and I know for a fact that there won't be any locked out features I have to purchase.
As far as spending money on items, none. The only way I will use D3s RMAH is if I sell anything on it and get the Battle.net currency that way.

I wouldn't spend any money on items in Diablo 3. I plan to sell anything ridiculous I get to help pay for the new laptop I'll need to buy to play it.
I normally play vs monsters, not players, often often very good stuff will do. The 'best' gear makes it too easy and then it stops being fun.

MrSmithwayne 2 months ago 18
@MrSmithwayne This is more true of Asian F2P games then it is of Western F2P games... for example... League of Legends is F2P and to be honest, riot points don't really get you that far compared to how much they cost... In an asian F2P though, $5 can give you a massive advantage over free players, and once people acquire that advantage, they get addicted to it and start paying $10, $20... $50... and it gets out of control.
Pattoe 2 months ago
@MrSmithwayne I think the key to enjoying "f2p" is just setting a spending limit, such as the cost of a normal game/budget game/15$ a month etc.
Ofcourse, that's only worth it if the game is actually as good as those other games you're comparing it to. f2p is more like "pay what you like, but you will pay at some point" tbh 15$ a month in a f2p gets you a lot
Personally I've never been in a rush to get fancy items, it's always a bit overwhelming having everything unlocked at the start..
emikochan13 2 months ago
@MrSmithwayne how can you say $15 a month for a whole game when you need to grind for hours on end to achieve some pathetic little item to upgrade your character. Aren't you the perfect customer.
kn2k7 2 months ago
@MrSmithwayne Not completly accurate, look at League of legends, truely free and almost no advantage can be bought with real money.
FarligaBjorn 2 months ago
@FarligaBjorn Not true. If you spend money on Riot Points you can buy all the runes you need in an instant for your build whereas grinding enough currency to otherwise buying all that would take weeks.
Zinaroth 2 months ago

Not to knock anything you've said because its true but there is one free to play game where micro transactions don't matter. World of tanks. The only perks for spending money are in essence speeding up gameplay. More exp and more credits with premium tanks. Halfway through the tank tier I have yet to really feel a need to go premium. The only issue with the game is that 4-5th tier tanks often have to fight 8th tier tanks which makes things a bit stressful.
Unf0rget 2 months ago
@MrSmithwayne I agree. Although I don't like subscriptions. If it was subscriptions on most of the games I probably wouldn't ever try them out. But as you imply, free-to-play doesn't really mean free. You don't have to spend money, but say that you get limited inventory space of 10 slots... and u can unlock 50 with money... Obviously you will only experience frustration in such a game. Or mounts/upgrades that costs much money/resources and they can fail too! Not really "free".
HugRunner 2 months ago
@MrSmithwayne Also, people always forget TIME spent in a game. Time is actually money in free-to-play games. If you spend time in a game as a "free user", other players (especially those who pay) have someone to play with! Without people to play with, or to kill, what fun are those items you bought. Even people, who don't spend money in a game, contributes a lot to the game.
HugRunner 2 months ago

@TheRay5885, GW2 is gonna have mini-expansions which, in the end, will cost almost just as much as a monthly fee game. Just thought you should know that you're gonna pay more than just once, if you're gonna play GW2.
sweou 2 months ago 10
@sweou That's a good point, but buying those expansions will be optional and not having them shouldn't impact the base play too much. I thought the first GW was great but I didn't play it enough to buy any of the expansions and could pick it up and put it down as I wanted. But if I'm really into GW2 I'll buy the expansions... without having to look at my schedule to guess whether or not I'll be able to play enough to justify the cost in that month.
I'm almost tempted to play a bit of GW now. :)
TheRay5885 2 months ago
@sweou I don't mean to intend this question to be rude/accusing, but how do you know this? If show i really would like to see the article. I myself am a completely devoted fan of 5 years for guild wars and have the "GW2" site as my home page. One of the most important factors is that its always had that one based price. Of the many articles ive also read on that site, i want to say i faintly recall them stating its was FTP and not going to do anything like that. Thanks :D
MrThebigcheese125 1 month ago
@MrThebigcheese125, One of ArenaNets guys, the Lead Designer I think, has stated that they would have mini-expansions that would cost money. Mini-expansions = not the same as patches. There might only come very few out and I don't think it will be for a large fee, but people tends to think that "No monthly fee = F2P", and that's not entirely true in GW2's case. Still looks good tho. and cheap when you think of the quality of the game.
sweou 1 month ago
@MrThebigcheese125, btw. I meant that the price was cheap, when you think about how good the game is, just to make sure that my last sentence doesn't get misunderstood, cause I would've misunderstood it, if it were me who were reading the comment.
sweou 1 month ago
@sweou It'll have expansions, yes, but if you think there will be "mini-expansions" costing 9~15$ every month, you're wrong. There's going to be free updates with content, too. Not to mention even pay to play MMOs have costly expansions? Heard of WoW? It costs about 100$ to get every expansions pack, and that only includes a free month of pay.

Have no problems at all with subscription fees, they are so low anyway which makes it cheap entertainment.
If you play at least 2-3 hours every month and enjoy it then it's a cheaper way of entertainment than say going to the movies.

Having a sub fee makes me feel obligated to play the game. I do have willpower, but when I chose not to play the game and focus on other things my money is going to waste. I want to be able to take a week or two break from a game and not have to spend money for it.
