To be honest, I like the German version best, not just because it hit #1 when I was in Germany in 1971, but the words are more poetic and fit the music better.

This is the original english version, ever since it hit the charts in the early 70's I have adored this, this is the only original on here, the only one that ends with the words 'Stay a little while with me' which was the version in the UK charts in 1971...Thanks so much for the post

It's so nice to hear this again... my dad had it on a mixed tape when I was a kid and it's been 25 years since I heard it!

Does anyone know of an English recording of this song by a female recording artist? I really don't remember a male voice singing it on my Dad's mix. I really thought my version was performed by Susan Jacks/The Poppy Family, but the internet doesn't think so. I'd love to hear the version I know.

In the chorus, Danyel seems to say, "Butterfly, my butterfly, though I know you must be free" (instead of "now I know...").

Does Danyel mispronounce "now" (being francophone), or are the lyrics incorrect, with "now" ?

This was my favourite song when I was little and my dad (who passed away 2 years ago) and I use to listen to James Last and his band play it. Being part German I only knew the German and now I can listen to the English it is beautiful in both languages....This brings back so many memories of both my Dad and my childhood.. God, it's unbelieveble! It took me so long to find this song. I loved it when I first heard it, but at the time I was a little boy and I did not record it . Only been to Germany once way back at 2006 was at frankfurt ( Spelling maybe wrong ). Notice that the tour guide was very on the ball when it comes to timing just took a bit long for our lunch and he got real pissed off. Seems european unions are very strict on working hours.
