i have never had any luck with Briggs Engines for long term use. i have 2 craftsman tractors both 6000 gt one has an 18 hp kohler and the other has a 27hp kohler both still run great
Not the frist time i've seen valve seats that have been peined in. Normally we do it to retain dust seals on wheel hubs. Not good practice to pein in a valve seat
by the way i posted half way through the video so i wanted to comment on the part i just saw, you were talking about the dimples on the head, that is called peening i have done it to a couple of valve jobs and have never had one come loose yet, you have to keep the peens equally spaced and try to get the same depth holes each time and keep them the same distance from the valve, did you ever get the engine fixed?
i bet your broken magnet came from removing the flywheel with a hammer it seems like no matter how lightly you tap on the flywheel with a hammer the magnets will break, i have broke a few then started using a wheel puller
On an alum head if the valve seat lose after you install it you dimple around it in a couple places to tighten to hole up .. what broke the seat was the excessive amount of dimples actually warped the seat and the heat eventually caused it to fail ...the head is junk unless you mill the valve seat hole out to a larger size to clean the roundness up or it will fail again...Dave
That's weird that the magnet chipped at the same time as the cracked valve seat. So is standard procedure to get an over-sized OD seat so it stays pressed in. The craftsman wrench sure worked well. I hope you show it going.
Yeah Davidsfarm had the same problem but the whole valve head thing broke off. I knew what the problem was right away when you posted the last video about this tractor
I have never like briggs OHVs, I call them AHOs for good reason, they suck, give me a L-head briggs(Flathead) anyday. I scrap the ohvs when I get them, not worth fixing.
I wouldn't ever trust that valve seat replacement trick, its to risky. Still not a bad deal once you get it running again, sell it and make some good money.
interesting.. I have neve messed with one that new. All mine are from the 60's and 70's with cast iron Kohlers and Wisconsin motors. Had a cube with a 12 hp Tecumseh i got for free. Got it running for next to nothing. decent mower but thats about it .

i just rebuilt my 14 horse briggs single ohv it was ten years old and I never really took great care of it but always changed the oil and only used high quality silicone oil and even slick 50'd it when i got it new, the inside of the motor was in unbelievably good condition and only required minimal cleaning and some valve grinding.
I can't believe someone would try that trick with the valve seat, just get yourself a new head, less work really.
this makes me think about that LT2000 that i was gonna buy. I thought that the briggs engines were pretty good with their smooth sound and full pressure lubrication, but this'll make me think twice about buying one. If I got a JD LA series, maybe I'd go up to the 125 so I could get the V-Twin.
you can take a wild guess as to which yahoo left the keepers in there and damaged the magnet while trying to put the thing back together. dimpling to hold in a valve seat. that is retarded.
If you lost a valve keeper you probably have a bent valve. You need to put it in a lathe with a collet chuck and indicate against it to determine whether or not it is.
No wonder whoever had this tractor before decided to do away with it. But it sound like once u put a new piston and rings in it; u might be good to go. I guess only time will tell on that one....

i use that method of punching around the seat to hold it in works for me but i do it closer to the seat this guy did it to far away and of course there was no room to punch on the one side of the head

Ah redneck engineering at its best..... Ive had a couple stator magnets come loose on one 11HP briggs , it wrecked the stator ring , i just tore all the loose magnets out and pulled the ring- worked like new( no charging system but oh well) .
Also had some tractors with 'stuck' motors - tractor sat outside so long the belt had rusted to the drive pulley....
the old wisconsin 2 cyl engine i am working on fixing had a stuck open exhaust valve. thats all it took to stop the engine from turing all the way over. i got it free but still have more work to go to get it running!
i think you got a good buy for $150! you can fix it up and turn it for a decent price!
Gotta hate your NEW briggs engines, Damn plastic and chinese and mexican crap. I would say chuck that crap engine and throw a kohler in there! Good quality will always show, oh yeah and stupidity! Nice mower though.
I'll give ya 50 bucks for it.

the problem with this engine is that it's 501 cc's , and the components were never made strong enough for that kind of power...

The valve seat probably came loose like the one in my '80 Briggs. The punch method was how my dad and I fixed it.

Someone tryed to PEEN the valve seat back in the head. The head can be saved at a good machine shop,

Sucks about the head too. Cant wait to see it together!
