As a general question to those in favor of the assault weapons ban: Specifically what feature and/or function of the rifle do you use to classify it as an assault rifle? If it is automatic firing, those have been outlawed & strictly regulated for what, 50-60 years now? I would like to know what you think makes a rifle an assault rifle, with justification. I think this is a simple question, so please oblige me.

@amparkr That is incorrect. Most criminals prefer handguns to the so called 'assault rifles'. Your standard AR-15 semi-automatic rifle (one pull of trigger equals 1 shot) is a very popular rifle for shooting competition, varmint (pest) control & general 'plinking'. It is no more powerful or dangerous than the stock Ruger Mini-14, which you could dress up to look 'scary' without changing any functional part of the gun.
Isn't it interesting how the gun is such a controversial tool? If a drunk runs over someone with his car... there is no public outcry to outlaw alcohol or the car, even though more die from cars every year. Alcohol poisoning kills many (possible more) as well. The reason is because we are accustomed to those things, and to most it is unthinkable to blame those deaths on the inanimate object. For many Americans, this same thinking extends to guns... a dangerous tool, but a tool nonetheless.

An assault weapon is any rifle with a detachable magazine, pistol grip, folding stock and can fire bullets without having to chamber a round. If they are so law abiding then why would they need a gun that is made for harming and killing people. As a general question to those in favor of the assault weapons ban: Specifically what feature and/or function of the rifle do you use to classify it as an assault rifle? Your standard AR-15 semi-automatic rifle (one pull of trigger equals 1 shot) is a very popular rifle for shooting competition, varmint (pest) control & general 'plinking'. It is no more powerful or dangerous than the stock Ruger Mini-14, which you could dress up to look 'scary' without changing any functional part of the gun.

Isn't it interesting how the gun is such a controversial tool? If a drunk runs over someone with his car... there is no public outcry to outlaw alcohol or the car, even though more die from cars every year. Alcohol poisoning kills many (possible more) as well. The reason is because we are accustomed to those things, and to most it is unthinkable to blame those deaths on the inanimate object. For many Americans, this same thinking extends to guns... a dangerous tool, but a tool nonetheless.

An assault weapon is any rifle with a detachable magazine, pistol grip, folding stock and can fire bullets without having to chamber a round. If they are so law abiding then why would they need a gun that is made for harming and killing people. No matter how law abiding they are... life happens to throw you lemons and some dont have the wits to figure things out so they use bullets!

Is it just because it looks scary? For an example, lets compare a semi-automatic M1A to a semi-automatic M1A in an EBR stock. In your misinformed eyes, the M1A would probably look a lot less intimidating, but the M1A with a EBR stock would look like a "assault weapon", yet they are both the exact same rifle.

This summer I had to take an air plane to attend a wedding.
I didn't realize as I went through security that I had this mini gadget attached to my key chain it was about 1 inch long, Enclosed inside was a 3/4 of an inch bottle opener screw driver blade & a 3/4 of an inch nail file blade with a pointed tip.
That gadget was confiscated as a security threat yet the terrorist in AZ was allowed to carry a military weapon into a crowded event. Difference - No lobbist support.

In New Zealand we have more guns per capita than the USA and you can buy guns when you are 16, yet we have extremely low gun homicide rates. why ?. Because although we allow AK47s for 16 year olds, we DO NOT allow pistols unless you have a special licence for a club, and your guns must be stored in a safe bolted to your floor to stop theft. Pistols are for criminals, rifles for home protection. If the USA used this model it would be much safer, alas Americans are not too bright.
