Different accents in different areas. I can tell he's not faking, but he's not from where I am in NL; there's a thicker accent that is the more stereotypical Newfie accent in the area I was born.

nah it's an accent - accent is different ways of prounouncing words, and a dialect is changes in grammar and the actual words you use (I'm a linguistics student :P)

That's correct. An accent refers solely to phonology (pronunciation) and dialect refers to this as well as syntax and word choice.
