its not so much how tall you or your horse is. . . . . its more how much leverage and forward motion that really counts if you can get enough prepetual motion going there shouldn't be a problem getting on
im always scared that im going to kick my horse when i mount like that, i am 5'4 and my horse is 15.3 and im really bad at mounting like that, i can mount my friends 13.3 but not like that xD kinda sad
Wow, you did that very smoothly! When I tried doing that, I got stuck halfway up.......I'll put it on as a video response actually, it's pretty funny!
good job! I only have a 14.3 hand horse and I can't even do that and I'm about your height. Lol 'corse i've never really been determined to do it lol!
lots o springing! hehe, I learned on a monsterous Holsteiner when i was a little thing! don't give up!!!! the main thing is momentum like a gymnist. that's honestly what helped me out was thinking about a gymnist pushing off for flips or doing the parallel bars.
hope it helps those learning! oh, and ice packs for when you miss !
Just practice, practice, practice. It feels awkward at first, but once you do it, you can do anytime. It is really just getting the feel for it that is hard. GOOD LUCK!
I find it easier to swing up and on. When I try it by standing at her side, she is just too tall and I can't get up there. If you stand at about their shoulder and grab some mane, it itsn't too hard. Just keep your elbows bent and your body close to your horse. The closer you can stay to them the easier it is. I'm working on another mount. Hopefully I can get a video of it. I stand in front of her with my back to her and she puts her head between my legs and lifts me up there.
She's Gorgeous. Gypsie x Shire. Man BIG horses. I want a Gypsie farm so bad. They are Beautiful! Shires are awesome too. ^_^ Most the horses i ride aren't that big. Anyway i dont ride bareback that much normally just for fun and most of the time i have a stool to work with. Haha
She is a Drum Horse (Gypsy x Shire cross). I mount this way bareback because it takes me too long to mount the way TwilightLippizan does. If she were shorter, I could do it that way, but I just can't get up there any other way quickly when she is bareback.
The way i mount up is just by like jumping on their back with my stomach on the back and both my legs hanging off, then i swing my right leg over the butt. Haha That looks toooooo hard. o_O
Out of curiosity... is that your standard way of doing it? Every time you mount bareback you do it that way? If so, I always thought that depending on the horse, if you do it that way it can run right off with you?
Yea thats how i do it all the time. But it's not like i go up slow. And i guess the horse could run off with you but i dont get up slow enough for that to happen. Plus i've fallen off alot before so it's nothing new that a horse would run off with me. Haha
it is harder than it looks, and u have to have..well fresh legs. u cant just keep doing it over and over... well at least i cant. it is actually really easy once you practice.. good job
if you have a horse that will stand still, stand to either side close to the shoulder, put your hands near the whithers, pull up with your arms bending at the elbows at the same time you swing up your feet. The closer you can keep your shoulders to your horse the easier it is. And, if you stand a little uphill from your horse the first few times, it is easier to get the feel for it. Good luck
I make a ritual out of riding. Before I do anything, I rub them down and work on easy yields with a lead first. Once their heads are down and they are licking their lips, we move to putting on gear or jumping on bareback. That way, they are relaxed and ready to stand still.
She was 15.3 last time I measured her. I tried the running start, but I basically just ran into the side of her. Just practice. It feels awkward at first but it gets easier.
LOL The first few times I tried I banged into her side pretty hard with my body or knees. She is such a good girl. She just stood there and waited for it to be over. :-)
That is a BEAUTIFUL horse.

That is the most elegant mounting such a big horse, I have ever seen. You are just great, Elisa!
By the way - you look rather medium sized. So, how tall are you to perform such a wonderful swing up?
heinzstoffregen 3 years ago 6
I am 5'6". In this video she was about 15.3. She is 16.1 now and I'm not quite as elegant at it :-) I have to get her a little downhill from me.

I try do stand at the side and jump up and on, that may be were I'm going wrong.....

I'm 5'6"
LizaLou76 3 years ago
WOW! i'm 5'2" and my horse is 16.1 too. i'm trying to figure out how to mount bareback successfully... but it isn't working out too well ;)
horsiebabie123 3 years ago
Practice with your horse a little downhill from you. It makes it easier to get the "feel" for it.
LizaLou76 3 years ago
My pony bucks when I do that because she had a baby so her back gets sore.

neglect is cruelty. Training a horse for a purpose is hardly cruel. If anything, it ensures she will always be treated well and not inhumanely.

good job! I'm always afraid I'll kick my horse in the flank. kick in the flank means not a happy horse. lol.

I know what you mean. I got her flank desensitized first by bumping her with my torso and knees before I tried this so she would be ready for it.
