This is before my time, but I just got a couple of memorabilia from this actual race from Gerrit Wolsink's sister (Dutch racer from that time). He brought T-shirts and stuff signed by Brad Lackey back to Holland. Pretty cool to see that these shirts are from this race...
Great job for a 12 year old..I was 14 at that time and could not wait for Wide World of Sports to show the race , at that time I was lucky to get 4 channels on the tv. I rooted for Mikkola and Lackey on the Huskeys...Thanks for sharing...
I bought the program for this GP and had the cover of it silk screened on to a t-shirt, I used to wear it everywhere. I still have it but its a bit faded, Believe it or not I tried it on and......I couldn't get it past my shoulders. It must have shrunk....
I went to that race, and also the first GP in 73 and the Trans AMA at Carlsbad in 72. Me and my friends crawled through the tomato fields to sneak in. They used to have the Weigh in at the Carlsbad mall. We rode out bicycles there to see the Europeans that came from another planet. Decoster was there answering questions with his year old works bikes. I miss those days.. Thanks for posting the Video. Brings back great memories
Fantastic video, thanks, it takes me back, I started racing MX in Melbourne Australia in '74 on a TM125, I race a GSXR1000 Superbike now but I'd so love to go back to my MX days in the '70's.
Its amazing how we all share the same passion for the sport, and thinking of all the things we do in order to ride and to meet our heros. Thank you for that comment. Ive done many road trips a lot like that, driving straight through the night... I wouldnt take those adventures back for anything!
Thanks for the memories! My racing buddies and I drove an old van from Missouri with an 8-track of ZZ Top blaring the whole trip to be there for the race the next day on Sunday. My dream then was to see the great Roger DeCoster in person. He was simply a GOD!!
My dad took me to the 75' Carlsbad grandprix. Rex Statton lead the first race for several laps. The crowd went wild. Marty Smith dominated the 250 support class. In them days, no one could touch the Europeans. Miss them days and my dad.
I was 10 when this was shot, and had gotten a hand-me-down CL-100 Honda for X-Mas. Of course, the first thing I did was take off the lights, fenders, and everything else I could think of, then harassed my dad for Preston Petty fenders and knobbies. Everything changed the day one of my friends showed up on a TM-75 Suzuki. I REALLY had to beg then!
It's interesting how you learn things like that, only after so many years of thinking it was the other way about. Did you also know that Maico is technically pronounced like "Mie-Co" rather than "May-Co?"
And on an off-topic bit of German pronunciation, Dr. Seuss is pronounced "Soyss," and yes, you DO have to pronounce the E in Porsche.
Having owned (and dearly loved) one of those "My-Co's", yes, I knew the German pronunciation, although almost exclusively I used the "American" pronunciation- otherwise my ridin' buddies would think me overly snooty. I've even been to the Holyland: The factory in the Black Forest from whence they came...
Unreal...I'm stunned. I was 11 years old when you shot this, and although I had just learned to ride at that time I had yet to discover the sport. A year later I was totaly consumed with it. Thanks for getting out there at such a young age and then sharing it with us all these years later. It would be cool if you wanted to share some more memories.
Oh man, this is unbelievable. I've been watching some videos of vintage races and I haven't seen anything CLOSE to this. I mean, those guys are really going flat-out, how do they keep from going sideways at 50mph? I was born way too late to see all these legends and I thank you profoundly for giving me a glimpse of Adolf Weil, DeCoster and the rest doing their thing. Too bad about Ake Jonsson and Yamaha, the poor guy never really won anything again!
hey, we're the same age and both grew up loving MOTOX. I got hooked when a neighbor let me ride his 1974 CR 125 elsinore. i was hooked after that. bought a 1976 RM 125 and started racing. Decoster and Marty Smith were my heros. Now I play guitar, playing hendrix and SRV. thanks for the VIDEOs
OK, thats it. I just finished restoring a 73 XR75 and I'm headed to the front lawn. My wife is going to be hot (just like in 74 ha ha). Thanks for saving this great piece of history!
Awesome video.....I went one year in the early 70s, probably around 72. It was great but I do remember the traffic jam getting out was horrible......do u remember anything about that?
Great Video....thanks. I always thought JN Roberts could dominate the Europeans but he rode desert not moto x.....Thanks.
Thank you everyone for the posts. Makes me feel very good that you could enjoy my home movies, even though I was just a kid, not even really knowing how to use a camera. Thanks again!
Holy *&%$...I was there for this race weekend, on the top of the big hill...Raced at Carlsbad & Saddleback on a CZ250, and then in '76 on a 400 KTM...Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Brings back a lot of memories to some great Dutch riders. Specialy "Flying Dentist" Gerrit Wolsink. I had is poster hanging on the wall when I was a kid. If you have some more.......give us more.
Same here - I took some stills - but I can't find them : ) Of course, MX was so different back then ... there was only a few 'big' races each year, rather than one almost every weekend as now. I always remember awaiting the Carlsbad GP every year months in advance. : )
Holy crap! I was at that race! I still have the program from the race. I dig it out and look at it from time to time. I used to have a bunch of stills from that race. I wish I could find them.
Wow! Memories are streaming back! Never saw the GP live but made it to a couple Trans-Am events at Saddleback at that time. I did get the opportunity to ride Carlsbad Monday the day after the '75 GP. It was beat to a pulp! Thanks for that!
Nice! Steady shooting for a kid. Great to watch Adolph Weil. He was smooth, wasn't he? The factory Maicos helped. And nice shot of Aberg on the Bultaco. He tested at my local track a few times (Muntz). Nice scoping his lines. I was at Carlsbad in 75 when Rex lit it up. Thanks for the great memories.
this is stuff i can relate to.

My 1st Race Bike was a 77 RM125B Suzuki.
many many bikes followed. My 1st Carlsbad
500GP race that I attended was the 1979 Race
& went to EVERY one after that up until they
shut it down. Wish I would have smart enough to take a movie Cam like You did!
I'll never forget the Race when Magoo Demoralized the Euro's & showed 'em how to ride. But this video here is a gem, this was
when the Americans were still in there learning curve. Nice job. & the music's great too.
