  • Well, it kind of makes sense...But...

But, having sex with whom ? An ugly W ? Or an extorting bitch ?? Is that suppose to make U happy ?? I don't know, really...

  • Larry David my man telling it like it is

  • I have to strongly disagree with Larry David on his theory. I know a lot of my guy friends who have girls that men in general would chop off and sell their left testicle for. They're getting laid every other night but are always complaining about how annoying they are to them. As for my single friends, they are completely satisfied not with not getting any and being broke ass college students. Happiness comes with the smallest things in life and it doesn't have to be from a job or having a cush

  • i was looking for a job then i found a job, heaven knows i'm miserable now

  • Michael Jackson had a great place to live. Loved the job he had. Probably didn't have much sex but we all know he could have had a lot of it. Even with all that, he troubled so obviously happiness comes from something else.

  • @sarevor I don't think Larry David is describing the cause of happiness, but rather, these are prerequisites. Without these things, you simply will not be able to attain happiness. With these luxuries, you pave the road to discovering happiness.

  • @sarevor MICHAEL. JACKSON. That's your example to prove a point? WOW. That's the only response you deserve.

  • Having a happy family helps. There are many asexual's who are very happy. People in Africa who live in huts are very happy. Probably because people over there have a better understanding of what is needed of them then in a world that creates existential crisis. Happiness is also internal.

  • I have a job I like. I have a great sex life. As for where I live, I'm renting my parent's basement so I'm not completely on my own therefore, I am not completely happy I'm just satisfied.

    Larry David speaks the truth.

  • its ok having a frugal simple life but only if its a choice. if you want a better house, job, and more sex and cant then its stressful. The problem for most people we have expectiations always exceeding reality.. so we never stop being unsatisfied. LOW expectations is the key :) and sex of course is helpful (but be realistic about who its with lol)

  • I wish I could have dinner with larry david every day for the rest of my life,I think I would be 90% more happy

  • next time, say psychology, we human have psychology.

  • I do not see why it matters if religion makes people happy. Even if I cared about happiness more than what is true, which I do not, I can not FORCE myself to believe something I know to be false - just like religious people can not force themselves to not believe. Beliefs come to us, we do not choose what we believe.

  • @AndrewKeechAK Firstly, Larry is an atheist FYI. Second, I disagree about choosing beliefs. On some level we all make choices that influence our beliefs. For instance, I believe that if someone seriously and honestly examines the validity of religious doctrine, they will find no evidence supporting them.. There are many who don't make that choice and instead choose to believe what is comfortable. That is a choice, it is not involuntary.

  • prettaaaayyyy goood, prettaaaaay pretaaaayy prettaaaayyyy good

  • You are going to be happy if you have what you thing is enough to make you happy . That does not need to be sex or money or job.

  • I think Larry David really is a genius.

  • well what if I meditate for five hours a day..

  • I hate my job, ... my sexlife is both akward and realy on a low pace ... my appartment is the cheapest and most miserable excuse for a home ... But i only feel unhappy from time to time , the things that keep me going are a few good friends and pleasures such as reading and making up stories for my own amateur novels .

  • He cannot be happy, since he gives power over himself to things outside himself.

  • @Teszchk Word.

  • He forgot about videogames and porn.

  • @FunnyJunkTV And, videogames or porn just make you want to have a real life even more.

  • @TheDudeman619

Who says what's a "real life?" As long as you're doing what you really want, that's what matters.

Everyone has to make their own decisions, or it's not a life at ALL.

  • there is one cure, which is to go into a weed coma everyday.

  • @hkim927 you can't go in a weed coma everyday if you don't have money.

  • @hkim927

Might as well stick a gun in your mouth. The worst life is better then the best drug-high.

  • @hkim927 but you cant do that if you cant get connections or even know how to get connections

  • Modern Woman contributes greatly to the depression - and even worse - among men by raising an unrealistic standard of what a modern man must do and be in order to couple with them all relishing a steady que of men they sleep with (or can anytime) whom are the exact opposite of the post modern man they will tell you they want. Hypocrits.

  • Those criterias gotta stem from mens perspective. Very primitive men. As if sex in itself makes one happy. One must have really low standards for what equals happiness if sex is nr 2 on the list to attain happiness. By all means, pay some prostitute in order to have sex and let's see how happy that makes you. I wonder if love, attachement and friendship means anything to men. Propably not. They're not that evolved. You've said it yourself guys: A man with a beer is the happiest man alive.

  • @tragedienne1 Who the fuck asked you to come on here bashing all men because of some things that Larry David said? It's obvious that he's talking about having a healthy *sexual* relationship. Living with some frigid, complaining nag who spends all her time planning dinner parties is not going to make most men happy. People who spend all their time flaunting their social status and keeping up appearances are never going to be happy.

  • @tragedienne1 It's pretty well known that sexual satisfaction makes people happy. It's scientific fact. In fact it is often key to achieving happiness. Just because that doesn't mesh well with your gender politics won't change this. I'm sorry.

  • Larry David is really something

  • If you have no attachment to any of these things as being important then you can still be happy. Larry is right of course but solely from the predominant western perspective.

  • I don't have a job I like, I don't have sex, and I'm incredibly happy. I don't think his theory is correct.

  • @l33tpwnzord you're kidding yourself

  • he sums it up perfectly.

  • Dave keeps it 100

  • sex is pretty dispensable out of the 3

  • I have a job I'm glad I have...

    I don't have SEX regularly

I live in a lovely dump....

For me, it's the little things that count... I love having conversations with random people.

I'm happy, and not a cynical douche about my life.

  • @ReasonGuysCopyright haha props

  • @ReasonGuysCopyright

So then you don't meet the criteria he gave to being miserable.

You have a job that you're glad you have. Doesn't meet the criteria.

You don't have sex regularly. Check.

You consider your dwelling to be lovely. Nope.

Only one out of three. I'm pretty sure if you checked 3 out of 3 you would be pretty miserable.

  • The voice of destructive cynicism.

  • I love Larry David!

  • 1- i have a job i dislike

2- i do not have a sex life

3- i am ashamed of where i live

so as per larry david....i am miserable...and he is right..i put on a happy face...think positive...but i am a fucking loser...end of story.

  • @ChiroQuacker head up man. if you don't like it, find a way to change it! start working out, plan a business, get pro-active with meeting women, do something! good luck.

  • @ChiroQuacker Do something about it, start a new story...

  • @ChiroQuacker

    Have a wank :-)

  • @ChiroQuacker dito, pal

  • @ChiroQuacker

Americans are too hung up on external things, it's our culture. That's a means to an end, it should never be an end in itself.

  • @ChiroQuacker i have everything but friends and sex and i feel pretty awful myself. im gonna laugh hahahahaha.

  • @ChiroQuacker : u r absolutely right, I can't get out of this rut.

  • @ChiroQuacker Dude , you always have a religion . AHahhahahah

  • @ChiroQuacker you're not a loser, just haven't figured out what you need to be doing right now to make it better! other than what Larry just said, LOL!

  • @daxeboy9

There is no such thing as a well-adjusted slave, and we are all slaves to the American empire, which makes the pursuit of happiness into a wild goose-chase-- since it fools people into believing in freedom they don't have.

  • @ChiroQuacker maybe you need religion to have an advantage over others

  • @ChiroQuacker Join the club buddy. Your membership card is in the mail.

  • @godfreewoman You have a membership card? Now I feel even MORE lonely!

  • meh- he was always better as a writer

  • SEX SEEMS TO BE A BIG DEAL WITH THIS GUY :-)

    I THINK HE's NOT HAPPY :-)

    MAKING LOVE IS BETTER :-)

  • In feudalism, the religious right justifies serfdom through promises and imagery of self sacrifice. The pious Scott Walker's of our time are living in the castle, who are you?

  • He's RIGHT, >>> PERFECTLY RIGHT!!!!

  • Sex, money and power can be a very good thing larry!:D but it could also steel your soul.. have that in mind the next time you speek...

  • @TheFunkMachine2010 hes not talking about ultimate supply of sex money and power. hes saying without regular sex, sustainable money, and a decent place to live, you wont be happy... and hes right! unless you have some extenuating depressing circumstances in your life.

  • true

  • truth

  • lol i fucking love larry david. he has a very comical way of presenting his ideas but they're always based on kernels of truth. he's a social genius

  • cameroon is the happiest nation on earth

    uk was 8th unhappiest

    whats the difference

  • TRUTH.

  • LOL

  • LOL so true. the guy is a legend

  • OK, i got the job , now i have to work on the sex and the un-dumping of my place. Hmm, that easy huh?

  • Why do people get so serious in their responses?

  • If I had $500,000,000 ....duh

  • on religious people seeming to be much happier, and I quote: Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur. (The world wants to be deceived, so let it be deceived.)

  • Swami Larry has spoken. That's the trouble with celebrity - you suddenly think you're an authority on everything.

  • No matter what..I just Love him..So funny !!!!

  • I wish both of the highest rated comments on here didn't have grammatical errors. Morons.

  • I think it's funny that this is new to anyone. He's merely repeating Freud, who when asked about the purpose and ultimate fulfillment of human life replied "work and love". Woody Allen has expounded on the same topic numerous times in both his films and his act. I love David but a large part of his comedy and viewpoints on life were informed by Woody Allen, who he obviously admires

  • @ritter89 Woody Allen's picture is in the dictionary next to the word "skeeve".

  • Wow, I lost a lot of respect for this guy. Not only is this untrue in my personal experience, it is also way off what the whole set of data suggested in its findings.

  • people want to suffer. It's an excuse.

  • What he says is absolutely correct.

  • Curb Your Enthusiasm makes me happy.

  • @theraviolicat Kramer makes me happy.

  • @Gargantupimp Me too. His character is based on a neighbor that Larry David had in New York years ago. There really is someone out there like Kramer!

  • I think happiness is a byproduct of your state of mind. I feel happy because I am not waiting on some ideal situation in order to be happy. So for the most part my happiness is sustainable through undesirable life experiences. I believe a person has to evaluate what is most important to her or himself and then begin to ask her or himself should I wait until this or that comes to fruition in my life in order to be at peace. Happiness is a byproduct of peace. When you find peace u feel happiness.

  • Seriously people, don't you recognize sarcasm when you here it. Larry David the character is not the real Larry David.

  • Seriously people, don't you recognize sarcasm when you here it. Larry David the character is not the real Larry David.

  • He didn't mention masturbation?

  • That is definitely not an advantage, one never thinks about death unless he wants to die. so who cares

  • That is definitely not an advantage, one never thinks about death, so who cares.

  • Now I understand why I never cared for Seinfeld...

  • I just found the key to happiness: work for Larry(I'm a grip, yo!), live at his nice house, and keep having sex regulary... Seriously Larry, I worked for 2 years on Northern Exposure. A year later I was working for $2 an hour with a traveling circus. Yeah, it was a great adventure but I starved and lived in a rolling bunkhouse...

  • @HunterMann how come your name isn't on the cast list of Northern Exposure?

  • I love Larry, he's brilliant, but he is coming from the perspective of a multi-millionaire. Do not make him your guru. You are the guru.

...and curb your enthusiasm, will ya?

  • @kingv911 I'm sorry for calling you a dumbass. I was moody to begin with, and I hate people insulting other people just because their views differ from their own, so I decided to lash back in favour of kingv911. And you are right, liking your job and living in a nice place is conducive to happiness. But happiness is subjective, and relies on how a person thinks rather than environmental factors. If a person hates sex and loves the ghetto, gets no sex and lives in the ghetto, he'll be content.

  • i noticed the asperger's syndrome video had comments turned off to make sure nobody can communicate about it

  • Good Sex

    Good Job

    Decent place

Larry gets me like no one else.

  • Happiness = satisfied desires / unsatisfied desires

    I don't remember where I read that...

  • Preach Larry, preach... couldn't be more right

  • I wish the highest rated comment "about irony" wasn't the dumbest comment on here. There's no irony at all, he's pretty much being honest while humorous at the same time. If you hate your job, don't have sex, and live in a a crappy, depressing place it will be difficult to be happy. Doing something you love for a living, having a mate, and being comfortable makes happiness a lot easier to obtain ..... HOW IRONIC!!! Moron.

  • @kingv911 it makes it easier, but it's not the key to happiness you dumbass. you think monks whine about their simple surroundings and lack of sex. and im not talking about repressed priests here, im talking about proper buddhist monks etc. theyre the happiest people on earth, and it's people like you who will never be truly happy because you will always rely external factors to make yourself feel good. HOW IRONIC!!! Moron.

  • @kingv911 The real irony is that by pointing this out you have become the highest rated comment. LOL

  • @kingv911 you can be ironic and right at the same time. He's speaking in generalities and about himself when he was younger

  • @kingv911 I hate when people seek revenge on someone and then call it Karma.....

  • he may be a bald asshole, but i still love him.

  • most people wouldnt know they misspelled some unless it BITED them in the ass.

hahah, n00b. Consider yourself pwnd. By The Hax0r

  • I think he was just giving practical advice and making fun of how everyone deeply searches for meaning while overlooking the simple obvious things that can make someone happy.Hes basically saying to be practical and not drive yourself crazy over the search for happiness.of course he knows sex and money alone wont make you happy.hes just being funny cause human beings will always be ignorant about the big picture and look for meaning.hes just saying be practical and dont overlook the basic things

  • l love larry david, i love curb your enthusiasm!

  • how anything he just said could be misconstrued as ironic or sarcastic is beyond me.

  • Larry is the man!

  • As always, the brilliant man is absolutely right! :P

  • Hes been sarcastic

  • @hldemi

    No he's not.

How can anyone argue with what he is saying.

    Don't lie to yourself.

  • Sign me up for this religion.

  • It's only his view, his opinion. This clip doesn't contain the meaning of life. You can all stop bickering now.

  • Since I have been in college studying engineering, I have not had a job i liked, haven't gotten laid, quit believing in god, gotten into debt, so I fall under the category of being "unhappy."

  • i think everyone knows what un-happiness is.

  • God you're all so stupid! All he says is that if you don't have a job that you like and you're not having sex, then you're generally not very happy. This is totally true everywhere in the world. So shut up!

  • @pindzola i was just gonna write that... when you have at least the sex is ok, but bad job & zero sex life could depress even gandhi.

  • @rafaguimaandrade For the most part Ghandi was self-sufficient and practically unemployed as well as celibate, at least after his wife died. So, I guess work and sex do not necessarily fulfil us all. ;)

  • This is practical sprituality... most of the people I know who have copped and dropped out and attempted to attain the higher self ended up pretty angry and cynical... angry and cynical is fine, too... just be productive with it... Larry just gives it to ya straight up... he went mad for a time himself, and what he is saying is autobiographical... he has learned the hard way! RESPECT

  • as much as I love him, this is where Larry goes a bit wrong.

i can say from personal experience that true spirituality can in fact replace both money/job and sex, and make one happy. Or at least cause one to not fall into depression.

  • @DeepHauz get outta here!

  • @DeepHauz You aren't having sex, and you dont have a job = Bum.

  • @iHipHop I'm sure a lot of bums have sex, even if it is with other bums. Bum-sex, if you will.

  • Genius

  • oh heck - and I thought I was happy!-LOL I realize he was

being funny. It just happens NOW I'm on disability and haven't

dated in years!-- I still thought this was funny! and when I get a

chance to laugh I AM happy!- so thanks

  • Remember, Larry I think wasn't intending for it to be a heavy philosophical statement. He just thought of things which would make people stereotypically feel secure ad happy: A nice house, nice job and regular sex. He was trying to be funny - that's all. He was merely suggesting that an average person would plausibly require a nice house and sex to create happiness in their life. That isn't unreasonable or radical.

  • Most people in Youtube wouldn't recognize irony if it bited them in the ass!

    Larry's the man!

  • @ffsf739

    Or grammar or spelling.

  • @ffsf739 Where are you going with that? Irony? What was ironic with anything of what Larry said in this video? I think you, like many people do, mix irony and sarcasm up for some odd reason. And to be honest, i actually dont think Larry's beeing sarcastic with this statement either. He's a quite simple man and what he says in this video isnt a lie. I might not be true for some people, but it's certainly not bullshit either. It's just simple facts really. Now your comment is ironic if any tho.

  • @337fuk I know this is a year old post but this makes me crazy. There is no "mixing of irony and sarcasm", sarcasm is a form of irony. If you look up sarcasm in the dictionary the word irony is in the definition.

  • @ffsf739

    A) We're not IN YouTube, we're watching the damn thing

    B) You lost all credit after you said "bited", please return to second grade for grammar lessons

    C) There is ZERO irony in this

  • @ffsf739

there's nothing ironic about what he's saying

  • I think hes being general and using what makes him happy as examples, but hes not saying "for example". Maybe those things won't do it for everyone, but if you're satisfied, secure and have love if you want it, why wouldn't you be happy? Or, what could make you unhappy? Some rich famous people are unhappy? Money and fame didn't give them what they needed. It doesn't invalidate his broader point, that your outer world needs to meet some criteria to make your inner self like it.

  • Like someone said, people in the third world are happy even if they have none of those things. They have other things that give them these feelings. They're proud of something, maybe, or they have something to look forward to. It doesn't make Larry wrong, he just doesn't cover every possibility.

  • Comment removed

  • If anybody wants to know how to be happy, look to Diogenes. There's a video here on YT: "Unsung Philosophers, Diogenes".

  • this explains a lot.

  • WOOOOOOOOORD

  • you idiots that disagree are not happy

  • That Larry David is an awesome, funny guy. Still I'm not sure I agree with him. It's like what Joan Rivers said "Anyone who tells you money doesn't buy happiness is an ass!" Very true. There's no question it buys happiness, but it can't be the only source. Most people don't have money to do everything they want. Some of these celebrities seem very shallow and negative. It just goes to show that rich people are just people like you and I. Some of us middle class and poor people are happier.

  • @chasetrussel i think it might be that money doesn't buy happiness; it buys comfort, and happiness is easier to achieve and maintain when you're comfortable.

  • I really like Larry's sense of humour but he's missed the point here. For example, he and Woody Allen are both guys who have money, a great job and have dated some of the most beautiful women around...but are THEY truly HAPPY?

  • You act like you're sure they're not.

  • think about it this way:

when they come to the ends of their lives and reflect on the whole deal, can you really imagine them expressing disappointment? I don't think so, I think they would express mostly pride.

  • Wow! That is the most ignorant response an actor can say. I have seen people in 3rd world countries with a smile on their face.

  • LoveHK29: You are absolutely 300 per cent correct! Happiness has NOTHING to do with temporary ego boosters that Larry mentions here. Some of the worlds richest people have been the most unhappiest. (Howard Hughes? Tiger Woods?)

  • @LoveHK29 They probably just had sex ...

  • @LoveHK29 And....?

  • hmmm. this is the 1st time where i have to disagree with mr.larry david.

    money + sex != happiness

  • I have been there. Not only was I unhappy, I was beginning to get really angry about my situation, So I got me a few holy books, got a job I liked and started dating churchy women, Ah, how sweet life can be!

  • he's right.

  • Whatever Works

  • that a very shallow definition of happiness and I doubt that truely the case

  • A person should live for this life. Seeing the afterlife as a way out is not a way to live.

  • One of the keys to happiness is so obvious that he forgot to mention it: creativity! Being creative is a kind of meditation - you just wouldn't think to call it 'meditation'. Creativity can certainly bring all the other things like money etc. But even by itself it is very powerful.

  • pleasure is not happiness.

  • kredit787: Yes, according to one of the most skilled therapists, John Ruskan, there's a basic duality in life. As there's negative & positive, light & dark, hot & cold, there's also happiness & unhappiness...one brings the other in an illusionary cycle. BOTH have to be experienced & accepted. The problem is , we humans tend to reject the negative.

  • ME: Dr Larry David, I am not happy, what should I do?

Larry: Oh yes, listen, get a good job, a job that you like, and get laid as often as you can. Then come see me in two weeks. I am certain that will cure you.

  • @manisthemeasure02 Easier said than done. Especially when you're ginger, not saying I am just that's one of many factors that could exclude one from immediate happines. Eczemas is another one I forgot about that thats a real turn off.

  • Happiness can be gained through a variety of ways. Crack can make an addict happy. Being drunk can make you happy. Stealing. Fighting. Pretty much anything (especially sin) can make you happy. But joy is different. Peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. These things cannot come from sex nor money. That only comes from the Holy Spirit of our Creator God. The God of the Bible. Galatians 5:22-23. Happiness is settling for less. Sin brings that.

  • The Bible mentions happiness in many places. One example: John 13:17 (Whole Chapter)

If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

  • haha, he is absolutely right on this one

  • I don't think this was so great...first of all, he's speaking for everyone else, why not just speak for yourself Larry? Ego too big? I know people who don't have sex, and are not rich...who are happier, than millionaires who do have sex, and are not living in dumps...it's a state of mind that doesn't always have to do with externals...if all this was true, what he is saying, than all millionaires having sex would be happy, not the case.

  • Phidian: maybe that's because the jobs of those millionaires are very stressful

  • Phidian: Absolutely. Larry is one of the most unhappiest, neurotic guys around (ask his ex-wife) and he's one of the richest in America. If what he's saying were true the $millions would more than make up for his stressful life. I think maybe he's just being tongue-in-cheek ornery like on his show here.(?)

  • @taildragger51

you're not getting it. when he talks about having a job you enjoy, he primarily means you have to enjoy the work itself, e.g. if you're pushing paper beneath fluorescent lights you'll be far less fulfilled than if you're doing something you genuinely enjoy such as...well it depends on the person. yes he makes the point that you need money so you can be comfortable (when he says so you're not living in a dump etc), but that's not his main point.

  • @Phidian Dude, he's talking about himself when he was a struggling comedian when he was young.

  • haha I love larry david!

  • Larry David is truthfully funny. I liked this clip and will watch this segment if it is shown in my area.

  • thank you larry david
