i think the knocking sound is being caused by the slide bars being a little bit too short, if they where summin like 5mm longer it wouldn't make that knocking sound :)
Now , you could build a roper steam velocipede or any of the other's of like nature!

The knocking sound is the crank side main bearing thats usually what it is
