I think it's easy to mistake Christopher Guest as an asshole, but I think he just feels awkward being in the spotlight as himself. He's said before he doesn't like being funny out of character, since that's not his style. So I think he doesn't enjoy it when people want him to be like "joke, joke, joke". Plus, a lot of his stuff is improv, so when people ask him questions about lines or routines, he doesn't have an answer for them.
Whenever people film such things, I wish they put at least one microphone on the audience to get the applause and shouting. They sound like they're playing in an empty barn.
"how many many sound men does it take to unscrew a litebulb, 1,2,1,1,1,2,,2," God i love Michael McKean .... And then when Harry says "wait you wanna hear him" priceless
Anyone grew up watching 'Laverne and Shirley' tell the truth. Did you ever think Lenny had this in him? I know he was a Lone Wolf and all but this is wonderful stuff.
@nwajoe He doesn't hate anyone, he just keeps his on and off stage persona seperate. From an interview he did a few years ago: On film, Guest is a hilariously droll comedian. In person he is serious and almost dour.
"People want me to be funny all the time. They think I'm being funny no matter what I say or do and that's not the case.
"I rarely joke unless I'm in front of a camera. It's not what I am in real life. It's what I do for a living."
@wynternight777 That is an interesting quote. I don't think it's so much that I expect him to be funny all the time. He just seems to range from disinterested to visibly angry with most interviewers (except Ricky Gervais). Perhaps that comes out of his annoyance with them wanting him to be funny or in character. My impression has been that all three of them are very intelligent and don't suffer fools gladly, but Mr. Guest seems the least tolerant. I think he's brilliant, nonetheless.
@nwajoe I can imagine that would be annoying after a time: people insisting you entertain them 24/7. I can understand his point; I do that for a career, off-stage I'm not here to entertain you. He might get the "dance, monkey, dance!" feeling eventually. I think I'd get a little grouchy too. ;)
Instead of an asshole, I think he's a bit shy and reserved as himself. He seems a lot more comfortable talking through a character than being himself. And Jamie Lee Curtis is a smart and sweet woman: she wouldn't be married to him if he were an asshole.
I saw them this past Friday night at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. One of the best shows I've ever seen. I have not rocked and laughed so hard (at the same time) in my life!!!!
I just saw them in Dallas (Grand Prairie) and my face is still hurting from laughing so hard. These guys were smokin' hot. Harry is an awesome bass player. Way better than I ever thought he was. MIchael and Christopher were up to snuff and their playing was top notch. The three together were amazing. Great show!
Loved the Seattle show. There were two bad speakers on the stage that were turned off (they were unnecessary anyway) and the sound was fine after that. They were great but also quite spontaneous, working out a couple of bugs (unless the bugs were planned, I don't think so) as we watched. I was on a high the whole show, fantastic!
Saw them in Seattle tonight and was pretty disappointed. Christopher Guest hardly spoke, and Michael and Harry did all the talking. The sound was kind of bad. I'm a huge fan of these guys and just felt really underwhelmed when I left.
They need to do a cinematic sequel to "This Is Spinal Tap" with a more lucrative contract for these guys, this time. If Reiner (or Guest) directed it, it would go over quite, quite well - could be enormous, in point of fact. "... Spinal Tap" is, to this day, one of the most fondly regarded films of the 1980s, and everyone now loves Guest's follow up directorial efforts.
OMG how literal can you get??? UNPLUGGED means "without all the production"! Its a stripped down show... somewhat acoustic, no loud drummer or back up singers. They do them in Nashville all the time. How do you imagine anyone in the audience would be able to HEAR anything if they didnt have at least SOME "pick up" on their instruments?? Why not ask why they have microphones? *sigh*
Poor mixing by the soundman (could not hear the bass), guitars needed effects, music started slow but got progressively better. Funny interview. and I still love these guys. The TAP can't rock out with those acoustics. "Do STONEHENGE!"
I understand that it's a live video. And as in most live performances there is a soundman responsible for mixing the voices and instruments which was not done well here. In addition, the guitars would have sounded better with effects.
AJest3r: if they are truly "unplugged", why are plugs coming from their guitars? In addition, it's difficult to be unplugged when playing an electric bass. Does that mean anything to you?
I agree that what is heard on the recording is not good sound. What your not able to see is that HOB had another event immediately before this and there was no sound check. Also the recording feed came from the mixing desk and not from the room. The bass was going through an amplifier and was heard loud and clear in the room. Believe me, "Tap" CAN rock out on acoustics.
Early in the performance you can see that Shermer and McKean are trying to get the sound worked out, and they seem to give it up for lost. At the end of the song Shermer motions @ somebody offstage, indicating the sound equipment. They knew, but performed through it, there's a professionalism there that a lot of musicians might not have been able to muster.
Also, you have to remember we're getting a feed directly from the board. The guitars sound really dry to us, but in the room I'm sure it sounded fine.
Musicandthemind is right: there are rules about this kind of thing. Harry Shearer has a puce colored shirt (should be blue or lavender) and his pants are clearly some sort of purple color and, of course, the book says "jeans or chinos". It's a travesty.
To be perfectly honest, Spinal Tap was created as a joke and you can't go into something like this and do something serious such as this. Spinal Tap has been famous for the live gimmick of the costumes, awesomely funny music and on stage antics. And without it, frankly. They are nothing.
But on the other hand, kudos for continueing on guys. Bring on the album! Bring back the costumes and Tap back into the UK!

I adore these guys...I've seen Spinal Tap dozens of times. And all the C. Guest movies...brilliant. But this has me worried...they're not awesome players, and they aren't really dressed for comedy.
