It was me who actually took this footage - glad that it gives such enjoyment. I was a platform supervisor at the time, and arranged for a spare driver to man the 87, and with the cooperation of the bobbies at Lime St and Edge Hill arranged what you see. I had to signal to the driver using the fire bell to speed up or slow down - not a perfect science as you see.
Absolutley Hellfire Phil, sitting watching it over and over at work, makes the hair on your neck stand up! Seen it loads of times over the years but its still dreadful! brings back happy memories. i remember you well with the camra out the spam's back cab Im in the third window but was turfed off at St Helens coz i was only on a savaway, lol.
great stuff my dad used to drive 40's out of newton heath seen whistling giants 1 & 2 & seen the 40's at east lancs... this is great footage... cheers :-)
drove 40s on the n,wales coast, but quit the railway after the 37s went because i was so pig sick of driving units.i am often told what a jammy bastard i am.i miss the railway but would never go back,it will never be the same again.
i am an ex maitenance worker from allerton tmd and your vidio the class 40 is some of the best footage i have seen ever. thank you so much richie ,atlanta
Hey Ritchie,I used to live in Southmead road and nip over the back fence to have a look what was on shed,Do you remember Jock in the shift formans office and a fitter called Jack Whittaker,I used to nock around with his son Peter
hey 31144. Yes i do remember both of those guys!I worked there from 1978 to 1987.There were three shifts and I was on the same shift as davey case.{jimmy cases older brother}I used to go to the chesire lines club across the tracks there and get shit faced before clocking on for the night shift!
The Cheshire lines !!!now your talkin, lol. They have blocked off the little gate that you could use to get to the Chesh, remember it ? opposite the double doors that came from the changing rooms in the depot (I think).1978-87 the glory days of the depot I think you'll agree,I think there was also a guy called Alan who used to sign the DMU's on shed from his little office just before the acid wash on the crossing,I used to also knock around with Kenny Davies who used to work in Allerton box aswell
hey 31144,I think I do remember Alan, was he a thick set stocky guy who claimed he could play slap base? I got to thinking about the whittaker guy you talked about and I seem to remember a harry whit too.Did you know ken holland{that bastard] in the office or Freddy Metcalfe{ fucked his daughter one night}And yes you were right when yiou said they were the hay days!
Can you imaging trying to 'arrange' such a shot 'unofficially' nowadays?! To have a driver, loco and the signalmen (Helpfull chaps most of us!) all in on the 'arrangements'
What amazing footage and more that worth the effort by all involved!
Much more great stuff on the Whistling Giants DVDs. TURN UP THE SURROUND SOUND!! :->
40145 currently holds the mainline baton for the class 40, but apparently (and subject to enough funding), D335 may join in at some stage in future. The 87 era well and truly ended (disasterously) in December 2007.
what a fantastic clip i love it, i was born in aug 83, id have been in nappies then lol, got an old mate who was a driver at edge hill and lime st who retired 1990, always chewing his ear over railways around Liverpool, was never really into the 40s, but i defo am now
In fact, I was a nearly a month old in May 1984; I wish I'd have been around before that. Ah well, there's always 40145 for a good insight into the past.
oh i wish i had bought my video camera 12 months earlier and i could have videod the 40s,they where my favourite loco, looking forward to watching your other vids
Very unusual view of proper locos! Thanks.

This is one of the most remarkable peices of footage i've ever seen.
a few questions:
what class of loco where you in?
did you have a mate driving who, having got the road out of lime street simply waited for the railtour to leave or was it pure co-incidence?

What a fascinating and rare piece of film. Lead loco has the boiler lit for some lovely steam heat. Nice bellowing from the front coach as well!

Fantastic, I have vague memories of seeing this pair passing New Mills once on a railtour, wonder if it's the same occasion?

Ahh this video is fantastic. I doubt we will ever see two 40s on the main line together again and now even the 87 is gone. Really great work.
