  • Every single time I see a blood drive I always go to donate, even though I know I won't be able to because I either am on my period or I just had my period and my iron isn't at the right level.

  • oh, and something i say to people who don't want to donate: i bet you wouldn't refuse to donated blood if you (or a close one) was in need. i think it is so selfish not to help but still wanting to benefit if something bad happens to themselves.

  • i have donated only once (age limit is 18 in finland) but in 2 months i can go again and i will bring as many friends as i can with me! i was so scared and nervous the first time but it didn't really feel bad at all, only positive for doing an amazing thing :)

  • uno when u give blud what do they do like hoe do they take it out and

wats plaitlets or how u spell it help

I RELLI RELLI WANNA GIVE BLOOD

  • sorry about the spam, i totally "dftba"ed your video. but it was a long day, i was awesomed out. I can donate platelets soon, as soon as my iron goes up.

  • there's this commercial that airs only in flordia for Florida's Blood Banks, and it shows people looking into the camera, and to the side of them it gives different excuses for not giving blood, and then it shows other peoplel looking at you(into the camera) and next to them it gives reasons why they need blood.

for ex: there's always enough blood, there's never enough blood.

i'm afraid of needles, im's afraid of losing her.

it's the perfect commercial bc it puts things into perspective.

  • My favorite was one I saw in 2005. it was some guy talking about writing to his favorite jeans company after he found out they used child/slave labor. They sent him a coupon for 25% off. So he wrote to every store that carries the jeans, trying to convince them to boycott the company. And he got more and more coupons. The paper the coupons were printed on were from trees being cut down in rainforests, killing off species of plants and animals that may have held the cure to aids and cancer.

  • And as it turns out, the people cutting these trees down were kids working their asses off for cheap labor, just to try to save up for a pair of those jeans from the company. The last words were something like "You don't have to save the world, but it doesn't take much to save a life. Give Blood."

  • My boyfriend had a really close friend who passed away cos he was on the waiting list to get blood while his brain was bleeding.

He wouldn't have died if he had the blood. His blood type was O- which was so rare.

We searched for compatible blood type donors but to no avail.

    It was so devastating.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your boyfriends friend. It's very strange that a hospital would not have a large supply of O- since it's the universal blood type. The problem with this blood type is that a person with type O- can donate to anyone, but that person can only have the same type blood in a transfusion. It's not as rare as people think, I'm thankful my family has the same blood type as me, we're all O- and I donate every 3 months.

  • i donated blood once and nearly passed out so i never did it again :( but i donated plasma for almost an entire year once :) it was awesome

  • I've wanted to do this for about 2 years now but I don't think I'm able... I'm going to try after the 12 month wait after a getting a tattoo.

  • i've been "committed for life" for two years now...

    :)

  • i cant give blood ... which makes me kinda sad :(

  • can you give blood even if you have sickle cell trait?

  • I agree with you... I use to be so afraid of needles that I rarely gave blood... It would be a very rare occasion. Once I started getting tattoos I said to myself if I can do this I don't have a reason/excuse anymore. So I do donate as much as possible. So thanks Risa for bringing this up it was something very important.

  • you can donate after getting a tattoo? I thought that was not possible... cool

  • @flowerpower213456 its only in certain states that you can't donate after getting a tattoo. some states don't have laws protecting the ink at the shops so the ink could be contaminated. but if you get it in a state that has laws usually you can still donate.

  • I want to donate!! what kind of questions do they ask you to be able to donate? I'm from Mexico and I've been living 5 years here in the us (I lived in Mexico before) do you think I would have a problem donating with that??

  • YOU GO GIRL :)!

  • you go risa. so many ppl here on youtube only care about themselves and here you are reaching out to as many ppl as you can trying to spread information about things that are serious issues and matter. i really respect you for all that you do and all that you have had to go through.

  • I can't give blood I have and used to have piercings in nose and mouth area, and then you're not allowed...

    It's ridicilous!

  • I need to donate blood. But I was told you have to wait a year after getting a tattoo before you donate blood. Is this true?

  • Yes, this is true.

  • I want to say thank you for being an inspiration, I know people have it worst than me, but I suffer from depression and I was having a very bad day, that last bit you said, really spoke something to me, I know I'm off topic, of your video, but I just wanted to say, thank you. I do give blood when I can.

  • ur welcome

  • Hey Risa. I love this project of yours bc it invoved something i feel passionate about. I'm a 17 year old high school student who cannot donate blood in the US because I was born in a country on the list of mad cow disease fear. I am the chairperson of my high school blood drive and we are about to have a platelet drive in the next month. Even though I personally can't be a donor, I consider myself accomplished by recruiting people. Last time we collected 250 pints of blood in 7 hrs.

  • Thanks for this vid. I donate whole blood every 56 days and coincidentally just made an appointment to donate platelets for the first time on January 3rd. I think a lot of young people don't realize how important donating blood/platelets is. I'm 18 and I'm the only one of my friends who gives blood on a regular basis. Hopefully this video will inspire more people to go out and save a few lives.

  • YOU GO RISA! WORK.

  • Yay! Donating blood is awesome, I do it all the time. =)

  • you only have to be 16!!! :D

  • Ok it is awesome to donate blood but here in Washington state they wont let you donate blood if you are gay and that is funked up

  • I know :( It's like that all over the US unfortunately. My old boss used to use every opportunity to tell them how she felt about that when we had blood drvies at work. Growing up, she had a boy friend (who she had sex with) They were young and he has since identified as being gay. She would go through the whole questionaire, then sit with the nurse and explain when asked "Since 1980, are you a woman who has sex with a homosexual man?" That she had indeed etc etc and when told she couldn't

  • couldn't donate, she'd make a point of informing them how wrong that "rule" was. I was with her about 6 of the times and although she knew she'd be turned down, she went through it everytime just to make a point. It is the most RIDICULOUS rule and it needs to be changed. I mean what if you had sex with someone and didn't know they were gay, they take your blood anyway. So it's a flawed system even in that aspect but it's just stupid. AIDS is NOT a GAY disease. If I remember correctly, the

  • highest concentration of people living infected with HIV or AIDS is the Bronx and it's Latina women. Go figure!

  • Hey Risa, I completley understand your feelings about this, I work for the Blood Service in Australia, so this is a topic I am very passionate about. Regarding Male to Male sex, it's not only Men as you are aware, but women who have engaged in "at risk" sexual activities, and that includes men who are straight and have never been with a man. Luckily in Australia you can donate after 12 months of that "at risk" activity. It's not a "gay" disease, it's more scientific that that, the main thing you

  • and everyone else has to think about is that there is a window period, which you'd be aware that diseases show up, especially HIV and AIDS. Blood and platelets don't last long enough for those two window periods to be over, so each blood service has to feel 100% sure that the blood they supply to people who are Immuno compromised is as safe as medically possible so they dont get sicker than they are already.

  • I feel like gay medical professionals should start their own blood bank and take any and all donors. I mean they test the blood before transfusions anyway, right? And people needing blood should have the option to accept the "gay blood" (lol it's so ridiculous).

  • To clarify, I meant anal sex with a man (assuming you are a man).

FYI, synthetic blood is in the experimental stages and is usually used in hospitals in poor and/or minority communities. Add that to your list of reasons why our government is effed up.

  • As a throwback to the AIDS hysteria of the 80's, one of the Q's they will ask you is something like whether you've had sex with a man in the last 20 years. If yes, you're ineligible to donate.

I can't donate because they also ask something about whether you've spent extensive time the the U.K. in the 1990's. (Fear of mad cow desease.)

As blood shortages continue, they will have to alter the criteria. In some hospitals, you may actually be given synthetic blood without your consent.

  • Once I wanted to give blood for my granny as she had cancer, but i could not coz i have positive Kell's antigene in my blood.

  • i really admire your courage and how you actually make meaningful videos instead of trying to market products to make money off your videos.

  • your such a wonderful person and so inspirational in every aspect, all the love for you on this seasons and always, hugs

  • hey risa! i actually wanted to say that you have one of the greatest hearts and it's such a big thing to get over such a big bump-in-the-way. i would love to give blood (i'm not afraid of the needles and all) but i'm anemic so it kinda sucks.

and in addition, you deserve to have more subscribers!

  • I would totally give blood but I'm actually under the weight limit to haha you have to be 110. I'm 108 lol Ive been trying to give for years

  • i just donated blood for my 13th time this last week here in vancouver, bc, canada. it was so quick and painless and the nurse and i discussed michael jackson and it was a blast. <3

  • i wish i could donate blood but i cant. in fact 3 years ago i myself received 4 packets of blood transfusion. but it made me feel drunk like 10 mins after they stop. lol. and now when im feeling better i still cant give cuz they say i am anemic and have thalassemia.

  • I'm just sad when I open the newspaper and see hospitals threw blood away when people on the next hospital needed it...

  • i've been trying to give blood since i turned 17. my iron was waaay to low for them to accept me though. so i've been working on getting it up for 2 years now. i'm just a little under now so i'm still considered anemic but i'm still working on it. can't wait til i can though ^-^

  • Risa, your comment that you felt better after receiving blood during your illness has really changed my thinking about donating blood. I used to donate on a regular basis but had difficulty because they either couldn't find my veins or other issues that I won't get into here. However like you said, my discomfort is nothing compared to the individuals that need the transfusions. So I'll get it together and get back on track. Thank you for being open about your experiences.

  • It really sucks that gay guys can't give blood. I used to lie about it, but I just can't anymore. I'm working on trying to get this stupid rule retracted. Maybe someday! I really loved your P4A video yesterday.

  • It is such a stupid law. We have it here in Germany too. But we're fight it against it. And as you said: It is easy to lie about it. So what is this law for? Denunciation if you know someone who is gay, so you can tell it to the doctors? Cause a gay guy probably would never tell it himself...

  • Why can't gay guys donate?

  • I wish I could give blood, but they say I may have mad cow disease because I lived overseas for 18 months. It's pretty disappointing, because I'd give it as often as they'd allow.

  • If you have the ABILITY to give blood, then please give it some serious consideration. It is such a necessity to treatment for many critically ill patients. Every time you give one pint of blood, you could save up to three lives; that is amazing! Just be eligible to donate, sit down, and have a good 10 minute chat with the nurse while he or she is drawing your blood. In the Marines, I was our battalion's blood drive coordinator, and I have seen how easy and rewarding donating blood can be.

  • Thank you for mentioning this! I donate blood four times a year in honor of those I have lost to cancer, I too saw how much this can help!!! And now that I am married I have passed this tradition on to my husband and his family as well!!! Thank you for sharing your story.

    xoxo

  • I donated blood in at the end of October, actually, two days before my birthday. And I donated the Red Blood Cell Alyx thing. And they take two liters of blood. And it didn't hurt at all. It was actually really inspiring.

  • I can't give blood because I've lived in a different country for over a certain time, and apparently they don't want that, but almost all of my friends are constantly going to blood drives, and giving blood.

  • One can give blood up to 7 times a year!! I give my blood as much as possible because I know I can save a life and that is the best feeling in the world knowing i can help others

  • I want to donate blood but I'm going to have to look in to the requirements more--health wise. :)

  • i was told i couldn't give blood because I'm a homosexual.

  • no freaking way.

  • But why? just because you are gay?

  • i cant donate blood i used to and now i am on medications. the good thing that i tell my friends to donate blood when i know someone needs it

  • Hi Risa! Thank you for putting the word out there. I work at blood mobiles n yes! Not a lot of people donate their blood these days. I really do appreciate for all the generous donors including you risa for donating. It's true, it's easy. Also, if you r really scared of needles, just let the person that is drawing your blood know so they can be aware. Give blood, save 3lives. :0)

  • i cant give blood, im not of age, and i have health issues that prevent it. but i just wanted to say, even if you dont know and love somone that has ever needed blood, look at risa, look at that talent, you could save somone, and look at her, shes so talented, and without blood and plateletts (totaly butchered spelling) she wouldnt be able to show her talent, its way more than worth it to give blood and platelets for that reason. youre saving a life, its just a prick.

  • by the way, videos like that make me realize why you are my favourite persone on youtube! :)

  • I should do that! But im scared, not of needles I've a few tattoos! I'm just scared :S

  • ^__^ <3

  • I donated blood this year for the first time (just turned 18) and will do so twice a year at least !!!! When I go back home (today) I'm actually taking a meeting with a doctor about giving stem cell. I will give whatever I can because frankly, I produce it constantly ... giving it will not kill me and it will even help people !!!

  • what is plate-lets?

  • Platelets along with red cells and plasma, form a major proportion of both human and animal blood. Microscopically, they look like little thorned or spiky ovals. Platelets are actually fragments of the cells in bone marrow, called megakaryocytes.

Google and Wiki are your friends!

  • platelets are cells that your body produces that are the primary reason you stop bleeding if you cut yourself. They're partially what scabs are made of (kind of). I'm trying to keep the scientific words out of this explanation. But they're extremely important in helping stop blood loss and repairing damaged tissue.

  • Blood is made up of three parts, Plasma, Red Cells and Platelets

Platelets are one part of the blood that promotes clotting... When you graze your skin and you see that clear kind of fluid on it, that is platelets clotting the wound so you don't keep bleeding! :)

  • Yes, I used to work in a blood bank and blood is always needed. Unfortunately, for medical reasons I cannot donate but for people who can Please, Please donate. My Mom for a couple of years needed blood transfusions like you Risa.

Blood is so important is it is really easy to donate. With a good phlebotomist you won't get any bruises.

  • i had a bad experience the first time donating blood (ended up with serious bruises on my arm), but knowing it helped someone made the pain not matter.

    DONATE BLOOD, Y'ALL!

  • i would donate blood but im always ill....so i dont think my blood would be good enough x
