@spitfiremodeller123 Velociraptors were a lot smaller then what they are seen like in the films. Velociraptor were actually one of the smaller species of raptors. With a height a bit lower then 1 meter (a little shorter then the leg of an average human). Think it was around 2 m in lenght with about half or more of that being its tail. And most likely feathered, atleast on its arms (markings found on fossils for "penn" feathers)
@spitfiremodeller123 In short their size in the movies were drasticly over "estimated" (they knew they were smaller but they thought it would be cooler with a bigger raptor -.-). Wonder why they didnt choose to just picture the utahraptor instead if they wanted size :S
I read that the real velociraptors are far different comapred to the JP ones. it says they smaller and share a more bird like appearance while the ones in JP share more of a reptile like appearance and much bigger.
possible for the changes might be because they filmmakers wanted to make them fit in with the movie but well who knows?
During production of the movie (Jurassic Park 1) they actually found a HUGE 6 foot tall 18 foot long in Utah.....Called the Utah Raptor. A man latter wrote a cool historical fiction of the live of a Utah Raptor Female (the book is called Raptor Red).
So in fact the Mega Raptors in Utah were actually bigger then the Movie Raptors in Jurassic Park!!!!!!
@equarg The utah raptors were indeed a hughe (atleast by raptor standards) species. They were about the size of the ones in JP (prob a bit bigger like you say). But velociraptor were a lot smaller then showed in the films. Shorter then the leg of a human (in height).
Oh yea, I know that..I just didn't have enough space to type that in my comments too. They were also scientifically called a different name (can't remember it now) It started with a D.....
Spielberg wanted them bigger, cause he did not think knee high Raptors would be scary. Plus he made up the Velociraptors name too I thought.
It just so happened that the larger Utah Raptor was discovered during the end of production =)
@equarg Yeap :) I think it was called (sorry for possible misspelling) deinonychus. But even if it were Spielberg made it appear bigger then what the fossils actually point towards. They certanly was large but not as big as in the movie (atleast not in height). So yea, if any raptor fits the JP "model" it would be Utah raptor, but as you said it wasnt discovered untill later so :P
During production of the movie (Jurassic Park 1) they actually found a HUGE 6 foot tall 18 foot long in Utah.....Called the Utah Raptor. A man latter wrote a cool historical fiction of the live of a Utah Raptor Female (the book is called Raptor Red).

@Alex2424121 They changed it to be more attractive on the screen. All raptors were much more bird like. Most of them prob even was feathered. On velociraptor there are actually marks for so called "penn" feathers on their forearms. And it wouldnt be suprising since dinosaurs were very closely related to birds. So close that today palentologist actually class todays birds and avian dinosaurs. The velociraptor were actually shorter (in height) then an average human leg : /
@MisticWays Realisticly they would be more in the seize league with deinonichus or utah raptors. But the film writers wanted a more famoust and familiar name (velociraptor) to draw more attention. Then they blew the seize porportion to the roof to attract even more attention to them. Velociraptors were actually just around 1m in height.
I think the velociraptors from jurassic park mostly suit deinonychus because they are 6 foot tall and 10 toot long which is roughly the size of deinonychus. Utahraptor is to big to match the jurassic park velociraptors.
@kitty3999 because my deer, in the land of Skyrim (the new elder scrolls game) there are farmers and gards and som other type of people who say this "I used 2 be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow 2 the knee" now you know ;)
Jesus imagine going into the past and experiencing the prehistoric age with fucking t rexes roaming the jungle teradactyls flying in the clear sky no cities just.. dinosaurs that's crazy to imagine what it was really like
@CHRISGT34 Speilberg was originally going to use Utahraptors, but found that they were too tall (at least 10 feet), so he twisted the story and put in the original script that because the dinosaurs weren't made entirely from their parent's DNA, some of the smaller ones could end up taller and stronger than they're supposed to be.
Since nobody seems to know this, ill explain. When the books and movie came out deinonychus was considered a velociraptor. It is mentioned exactly like that in the book. Later, it became reclassified as Deinonychus. Then, people who thought they were scientists came on youtube and tried to say what they thought happened but they were wrong
@SHHSquirrel Deinonychus was never considered as a velociraptor in any of the jurassic park books it acutally says that it was considered a dromaeosaurid which is a type of dinosaur or ( IN THE FAMILY OF THE BIRD OF PRAY). it was never considered a velociraptor ^^)
@PrinceJrJoe First book, Edition published by Ballantine Books, published in 1991, Page 115, paragraph 5, sentece 1, and I quote: "That's right," Grant said,"although Deinonychus is now considered one of the velociraptors." Don't try to prove me otherwise. I am looking at the book right now. That is exactly what it says. This conversation took place between Grant and Tim while they were walking to look at the raptor cages.
@PrinceJrJoe Weren't the Jurassic Park Raptors actually supposed to be Utahraptors? Because real Velociraptors were only 2 feet tall based on real skeletal findings. And the Utahraptors actually look like the movie raptors except a little bigger I think.
@baa55555a velociraptors in jurassic park are so fail, theyre ALOT smaller and has feathers, they looked like small hen kinda, they jp raptors should be deinonychus, a bigger version of velociraptor, so i'd choose the velociraptor and survive lol
@baa55555a Yes sir I feel that same way. I Feel like my best chances of survival would be against a T-Rex though it is a magnificent and powerful beast and unrivaled, based on the movie, it's vision is motion sensitive and raptors have perfect acuity and are small enough to chase you for an eternity and also based on the movie being able to achieve 50-60 MPH, well damn you're screwed if you're in the open wild. lol
@norncare1 I see. That's kinda how I feel about cats. There's so much misinformation about their eyes and what they see. They did true test on a cats eyes by sampling cells they were able to view through a computer and it looked better than any hypothesis or theory ever done by scientist in the past.
@CHRISGT34 Also a T.rex running that fast would be impossible, due to it would take too much muscle.Studies show that to achieve such speeds, 86% of it's muscles would need to be in it's legs(43% in each leg), which is just not possible.
@LockJ4wNo9 too bad they where really talking about Dienonychus and not Velociraptors (they thought Dienonychus wasnt tropical enough so they put all those facts and slapped the name velociraptor on it)
@LockJ4wNo9 real Velociraptors were actually MUCH smaller, Deinonychus woulda been a "little" more accurate... I think they choose to go the raptors in the film because it sounded cooler.

maybe they just used velociraptors because its a pretty intimidating name; veloci; like velocity,
