  • I wish Shane would have done this with the Dubliners the way they did it. I like this version but the Dubliners version is a bit more traditional.

  • Love that blastbeat @ 1:31.

  • i saw the popes years a go and christ shane was drunk and came on an hour late almost a riot

  • Damn, the captain was pretty upset about losing five jolly men

but the losing of the "whine failwish" was what grieved him the most

  • I'm a big fan of The pogues and The Popes. Is the nips any good? I have just heard one song with them.

  • He owns the song right there

  • "now greenland is a barren land, a land that behhh something"

as much as i really do think shane is amazing, i guess i can see understand why the pogues gave him the boot

  • nice

  • He had to do something, the Pogues kicked him out because he was sh*tfaced 24/7/365

  • just great song

  • I have GOT to see one of his show's live! Bucket list!

  • i loke this song wen im pished.....i always sing it!!!

  • Yeah but Shane is a god....so more power to him...I could never perform that loaded....I've tried.

  • Jesus Christ. That backing band have NOTHING compared to the pogues. They're like a very bland covers band. WTF was shane at :(

  • yeah. banjo players got some chops though

  • absolutely - Tom McAnimal was the best musician Shane recorded with...ever. I much prefer the raw sound of the Popes over the polished and muted sound of the POGUES.

  • @Apelock Complete and incrdible bollocks mate. Terry woods pissed all over him, not to mention Jimmy Fearnley. The Popes were just about ok but the Pogues were a superb band in their own right. The Popes are a rock/ trad hybrid but the Pogues were the originals and had an authenticity about them. Pogues covers of Dirty old... and Waltzing matilda are definitive. Nobody can touch them.

  • @SuperDsweeney

Terry Woods was good - no argument there. However, the Popes made good music without Shane. The Pogues? not so much. Don't get me wrong, I like the Pogues. But they were useless without Shane.Tom McManamon was a bloody virtuoso, who played tenor banjo for years in the pub scene before ever surfacing on vinyl.

  • @Apelock Tom McManamon did not a band make, God rest him. The Pogues were a group of fine musicians. Admittedly without Shane they were nowhere, I don't even have their two albums. I do have Shane's solo albums with the Popes however and know which combo was the better. But I agree, they are better than the two Pogues albums without Shane.

  • That's not a backing band, he recorded 3 studio albums with them, one live one, and they've done at least one album without him. They're an incredibly talented band that never intended to be the Pogues. They just happen to be doing a Pogues song here.

  • @charliesplatterhead True. The Popes are great. On this show they do a lot of Pogues songs though (I'm watching it on DVD right now, haha.)

  • Were there whalers in the audience?

  • shane is my god...forever...!!!!*slainte*

  • shane is god

  • Im confused, was Shane Mac Gowan in two groups, one called the "pogues" and one the "popes"? Or am I just nuts? Anyway, cool music

  • Exactly.

First, he was with The Pogues, till 91 if I remember well. From then, he created a band called "Shane MacGowan and The Popes". And today, he's back again with The Pogues. :)

  • but before either he was in The Nips!

  • @admarkham1986

    if i'm correct it went

    the nips

the new republicans (which after 3 gigs became the pogues) -solo work with nick cave -

    back to the pogues

    pogues fire shane

some work with sinead o' conner, johnny depp in 1991 while performing with the popes -

from 1999 onwards he went back with the pogue's

  • Shane was kicked out of the Pogues because of his drinking and started the Popes which was a band playing music in weddings and parties.

  • he is back with the pogues, and spider was far better,at playing the whistle, seen the pogues when they supported ian brown, and they burned the union jack together, class

  • sexy teeth..

  • Macgowan is a poet and an excellent lyrics writer, he doesn't need teeth - he's a genious anyway... :)

  • The drummer is a knob.

  • i didn't know that there was a concert in Montreux and i missed it. what a shame

  • Spectacular,5 stars!

  • Nice performance !

  • hmm, its good but not the same without spider stacy

  • the whistle sounds the exact same here without spider, so how is it not the same?

  • The Pogues has a very special sound that not even the Popes can duplicate :) But it's a great band. Do they still exist? I belive Shane's back with the pogues now?

  • popes are finished, Tom McManamon on the banjo there, died frm cancer last yr. Pogues are back together with big demand, no plans for a new album though unfortunatly

  • I read about that on Shane MacGowan's homepage. I don't know to much about the popes' members but it's a loss for folkmusic indeed. Let's hope there's a chanse for a new Pogues album! But at least there is the new boxset of lost material... It's a treasure chest :)

  • Ive read theyre doing a new one!

  • where did ya read that?!

  • mostly rumors but the Pogues wont rule out the possibility

  • The lyric "Overhaul! Overhaul! Let yer gib sheets fall!" was swapped. Caught me off guard as I was singing along. :)

  • Sadly, I think it was not on purpose. Shane started to sing lyrics out of order or forget them entirely. I have heard he is doing better. I hope so, he is one of the true poets in irish music.

  • i did dis for solo and ensemble nd i got a excellent on dis song but mines was way different

  • ahh this is too good..

  • "Red Roses" totally awesome. Anyone have Mother MoChroi or Lonesome Highway clips?

  • I have the official video they made for lonesome highway on a video i brought off ebay.I never knew one existed..id happily share it if anyone knows how i can get it onto youtube

  • haha "mine fail wish" around the 2min mark

  • Ahahha yeah ;)

  • haha he is a legend, he didn't let me down at the pogues the other day... he never does

  • @quiouiWILLYMAN sounds more like "wine fail wish" xD but still, great, great performance! Long live Shane!

  • Oh how i love the pogues :)

  • So fucking glad the Pogues are putting this back in their setlists. It's amazing.
