  • awsome Dan,your video reallly is helping me in bends, and attacks. I need alot of help..LOL

  • just keep practicing, and try to relax. It doesn't take much air IF you focus the air through the holes properly. So, single-note technique is key.

  • THANK YOU! This video really helped me out. I just got my C harmonica a couple days ago and have been playing quite often. I have a musical background, and I love the sound of the harmonica, so I got one. Your tips are really helping me out ,so I subscribed!

  • sorrry bro. I was f'ing with you a little bit. I have not had time to make a video of that riff, or write an email to explain it. I meant to, but got a nasty cold and have been feeling bad. again, I'm sorry to f with you. However, this is not an on-demand free harp lesson service. I'm sure you could find info on that tune if you searched.

  • thanks for replying have a great day

  • Hey Dan, I plan on watching all your great videos and lessons when my kids permit.

Have a good one Dan ;)

  • 12gagedan Thanks a lot brother, you were talking directly to me because that's the exact dilemma I 'm facing and that's being stuck with doing the same thing so yea your right because I'm stuck like CHUCK nvjharmonica

  • Thanks 12gagedan, great encouragement!

  • Your my fav player on youtube, and I've seen quite a few now. Gj

  • thanks very much. Jason Ricci is my fave.

  • switzerland is watching too :P

    great stuff

  • I posted a G Jam Track that your views can Jam to, I did this tune in the key of G so you would use a C harp to play over it...I did it for the guitar, but I love music and I juststarted to learn the harmonica and this jam that I did was good to practice with... Post your videos with it...

  • hi i bought a lee osker harmonica to larn on but its in the key of d,most teaching stuff on here is in c. can i still learn blues on d harp??????

  • You can learn with any key. It's just easier with a C harp. Anything that's given as tab, or that tells you what holes to play, will work on any harp. They'll just be in a different key. My beginner video gives some licks. You can learn them just by playing the same patterns on your D harp.

  • hello you've talked much about your 'source' which is john something. i won't write his last name, i might murder it.

i was wondering which material did you start on? i think you've mentioned it before. is the material still available?

  • Jon Gindick His youtube channel is "jamcamp06" His material is widely available, he has great videos, and (if you have the dough) Jon hosts harmonica instructional "camps" for people to learn. I got to be an instructor at a camp last week, and I have to say, that Jon really knows how to break things down for harmonica beginners and intermediates alike. He's a great person too.

  • The Netherlands reporting here. :p

  • awesome. thanks for watching.

    d.g.

  • Hey, Belgium is also following you!!

  • all over the world. It's nice to hear from you.

  • I live in Ireland. :\

  • Great to hear from you.

  • I suscribed. I'm about to start playing harmonica even though I don't even have one yet. I would like to ask your advice which one I should buy first and where.

  • I have no idea where to go outside of the US. Within the US, I like "Coast to Coast Music" It's a great harp-friendly web-store. You need to begin with a decent diatonic harp. Nothing that costs less than $10 u.s. Hohner Marine Bands, Sp. 20's Pocket Pal, American Ace, Old Standby. I'd advise against "Hot Metal" and "Johnson" harps.

  • That's really all there is to it. It's up to you to train the muscles in your mouth towards consistent clarity and tone of the notes you play. Harmonica is an "invisible" instrument. It's difficult to show what's going on. I did contrast some of the tonal possibilities in my video "tongue block vs. pucker"

  • your vid helped me a lot

  • New subscriber. Your great man, love your style on everything. I'm anxious to try your advice.

  • Just want to thank you Dan. All your videos have been a great help! In the past few weeks I've really been able to pick up the harmonica really well, thanks to your videos! Thanks and keep up the great work!

  • Sam, Sometimes recording oneself is the best training aid. Let me know when your vids are up, and I will watch. I'm planning to go through all the subs again soon, just looking for players, and to spread harmonica love. There's over 600 people subscribing now. Who'd have thunk it? As for the bends, just keep doing them. bend-unbend-bend-unbend-bend-unbend. The wind will come. Play till you're dizzy, rest, then start again.

  • Good stuff, thanks Dan. Just FYI, this is still Sam but I've got a new account. So I'll be posting under this and as soon as the new video camera gets here I'll try to get a video or two up! Thanks again and, as always, you're awesome.

  • I like what you are doing here. Very down to earth and honest. Keep Harping on it.

  • Dan,

Just found your lessons on youtube and they're great. Been playing for over a year but not practicing enough. I know your lessons will help. Hope everything is going well.

    DC from CT

  • Hey, I'm from CT, too. Just live in CA now.

  • Yes, I know. I played in the acoustic blues challenge you were in a few years ago at the Hungry Tiger.

    DC Jones

  • I KNEW I knew your name from somewhere. I wasn't sure it was you, since I get comments from all over the world. Plus, it's been a while. From what I remember, you don't need lessons, but thanks for watching mine anyway.

  • Thanks Dan.

You're doing a great job helping people out with these lessons.

    DC

  • depends on the sound you want. If you want to play blues/rock/country, get a mid-priced diatonic harmonica. Some cheaper models: Hohner Big River, Scout, American Ace, Pocket Pal. Most harps by hering, lee oskar, huang, suzuki would work too.

  • Thanks for your dedication and help! I started playing a few years ago when I picked up a Lee Oskar album and learned his songs by ear. Not bluesy, but melodic.

I'd like to know practice techniques for breathing and getting good, strong, fast and crisp sounds. Bob

BTW: Bet your could sell instructional dvd on ebay.

  • I'm glad I can help. Make sure you spend some time with Adam's videos too. They give even more detail. Thanks for watching.

  • hey dan congrats on winning the san diego harp fest trophy for the harp contest, sounded great, cool feel and phrasing and articulte playing

    i am impressed and encouraged

    thanks

    hockeylvn

let me know if you are gigging or such

  • I'm working on that, but it's slow going. Search for the "biff tannen band" on myspace. I put more of my effort into my "real" job, though lately. Thanks for the kind words.

    d.g.

  • Hey your good to learn from. Somewhere in the not too distant future i'll be posting my bit of first up boogie woogie..thanks 4 the tips..

  • send me a note when you do post. I'd love to watch.

    d.g.

  • Hey, thanks for the tips in all of your videos ive watched them and I am so much better than i was before them. Thankyou so much for them. keep them comin' Dan.

  • I'll make a few more. It's all part of my goal to bring more "good" harmonica players to the world. I hope that one day we outnumber the players who give us all a bad name. Thanks for watching and for writing.

  • Thanks for another informative video Dan.I've only been playing for a month and found your vids a great help.Dont know if im ready for posting a vid of my progress just yet.Think i may need some more practice and some bigger balls! lol.Regards from the UK.

  • Whenever you feel comfortable, a video will be a good exercise to help measure your progress (even if you don't post it)

  • You came across in this vid as really nervous. But let me say that I sought your kind of info and found it. You are doing a great job! The info you provided is really useful, thank you.

If you seek crtical feedback, then I'd say buy a collared shirt, dim the lighting a little and chill a bit. You've no need to be nervous, your content is excellent! Revel in it =)

    New fan

  • Excellent points cover in this video as always! Consistently incorporating slight variations to simple and established patterns is the most sure fire way to cultivate an original playing style.

I'll be looking forward to more videos! Thanks for commenting on my video btw. Everything is good on my end. How's the west coast?

  • The climate is oh so pleasant.

  • Big Danny G laying it out for all of you so nicely! Give it up! Glad you went for the overblow, man.

    Best always.

  • Thanks for noticing. They're getting better every day.

  • yo IM LEBANESE AND I LIVE IN CANADA LOL YOUR FAMOUS LOL

  • Thanks man. Make it 7 countries that people have contacted me from.

  • thanks for the advice man always helpful. my videos will be up soon. but quick question how the hell do you tonque flutter is it on the in breath out breath or what. ive been lucky enough with most techniques but that thing is damn near impossible.....

  • I have trouble (can't do it) with the side to side tongue flutter. The slapping flutter is a good way to describe what I do. Start with the 1-4 draw octave, placing tongue on the post between two and three. Once you get the octave (draw OR blow, really) pull your tongue off for the chord. Keep doing this until you can get faster and faster. When it gets good, the tongue doesn't move very far off the comb.

  • thanx we'll see lol pz.....
