Steve Perry has been retired for like 10 years and even bothering to make comparisons to whatever active singer is in Journey right now is just mental masturbation. Frankly, if you got Perry up there right now to sing this song you'd probably be a little less enthusiastic.

All these people have their own qualities. No doubt Steve Perry is/was one of the best and a perfect fit for Journey. There was Journey before Steve and they too were awesome but a different sound. I don't think anybody is trying to copy Steve Perry, can't be done but they do their best for the songs Journey does. Anyone wondering about another singer that could match Perry, look no further than Geoff Tate from Queensryche. IMHO the best vocalist ever, much better down in the lower ranges than Steve (if Steve has a lower range), with about the same upper end. @dadwit4shorties I don't know about that. Steve Perry has an incredible voice. I practically wore out my Escape vinyl record back in the day. However, Halford could really hit those high notes on songs like the ripper and victim of changes back in the day. I agree, Perry did an excellent job on this live version of Mother Father.

@ArnelPinedaSucks Very true but that doesn't mean he couldn't do it justice. If he just tried to replicate Perry it would be a joke, no doubt. But if rearranged in a way that fits the voice ANYONE could sing ANY song. The problem is most people lack the technical skill for such an undertaking, they just attempt to copy the original, and it fails spectacularly because their voice just isn't a fit or isn't up to the job (the latter in this case, as style wise they are similar).
I love this song! It defines my family. My parents went through a divorce when I was 12 and today, we are burying my older brother, who died of alcoholism and other physical and mental challenges. God bless him! Thanks for sharing this song!!

There is no one that can sing like Steve Perry. Been a fan ever since Steve joined the band. He is so soulful when he sings. I pray he puts out a solo album. He is doing fine without Jonathan and Neil. Listening to some interviews and Steve never says anything against his former bandmembers. That shows he is a very classy man. Anyone wondering about another singer that could match Perry, look no further than Geoff Tate from Queensryche. IMHO the best vocalist ever, much better down in the lower ranges than Steve (if Steve has a lower range), with about the same upper end. I like Steve, but if you have never heard Geoff, then you can't make an informed comparison.

Steve Perry is paid royalties everytime they sing his songs! That's why Neil always cries about Steve getting rich of there current tours! Then don't have Arnel sing Steve's songs and see who comes to their crappy ass concerts! Steve Perry brought all the success to Journey without out his voice they would have been nothing! Hitting these notes with a head voice, it's crazy. I've heard them sung in a falsetto, but Steve Perry's vocal ability cannot be matched by anone.

Perry brought the it factor to Journey and has at least a 5 octave range

17 people are either in denial of Perry's superiority over the other lead singers of Journey or they accidentally hit the dislike button. Seriously. One of the greatest displays of vocal power--of all time! The man can sing epically live! BTW new Journey fans, I have to point out that while Deen does a fantastic job with this song, there are videos here on youtube that show them using Perry's vocals to sing the ending. That should tell you something. Ha!

However, Halford could really hit those high notes on songs like the ripper and victim of changes back in the day. I agree, Perry did an excellent job on this live version of Mother Father.

@ArnelPinedaSucks Very true but that doesn't mean he couldn't do it justice. If he just tried to replicate Perry it would be a joke, no doubt. But if rearranged in a way that fits the voice ANYONE could sing ANY song. The problem is most people lack the technical skill for such an undertaking, they just attempt to copy the original, and it fails spectacularly because their voice just isn't a fit or isn't up to the job (the latter in this case, as style wise they are similar).

There is no one that can sing like Steve Perry. Been a fan ever since Steve joined the band. He is so soulful when he sings. I pray he puts out a solo album. He is doing fine without Jonathan and Neil. Listening to some interviews and Steve never says anything against his former bandmembers. That shows he is a very classy man. I hope he reads some of the comments from his fans. Or at least have someone else read them. Love ya, Steve Perry
