  • I remember this b/c I had a friend who lived on campus but thankfully, she lived in a dorm that didn't get hit.

  • I know! those sirens go off all the time its kind of annoying. (BTW if you couldnt tell im from jackson to

  • i was at work tht night when it happened. and tht was the night Oakfield got hit my mom and new born baby was at the house.

  • Yea i remember this my dad had to go there and fix it, it sure did take a long time to fix up!

  • I am still amazed that there was no death toll there on the campus of Union University.

  • did u ever give this to like people in the news cause this is some decent stuff despite bein in the dark for most of it

  • @be2dj thanks! the discovery channel aired ab three seconds of it on "tornado rampage" in '09 and the national weather service and national geographic asked for copies of it.

  • Awesome video. Not trying to be a dick but didn't the sirens give you an idea of what was coming?

  • @TBirdSCIL, thanks for your comment. a lot of people have made similar comments to me. the truth is that the siren had been going off for around 20 minutes and it goes off all the time in jackson, so, no one takes it seriously. second, i actually had more warning than most other people. most people were inside playing xbox when all of a sudden their ears started popping. some people didnt have time to take cover. i, however, had plenty of time b/c i saw the tornado from a distance. thanks!

  • @mbgodfollower i kno i was at my aunt and there a tornado siren right next to her house and my little cousin was saying tornado and i call her stupid because they were just testing the sirens

  • wow, this is crazy. I didn't know this footage was on here! I was actually there that night in the girls dormitory...I must say one of the scariest moments in my life. God is in control, no matter what!

  • man i live like right around the kroger there it was a scary night. that crazy you got that on tape union got destroyed i helped with the clean up man it was a bad time

  • Wow, thank you for this video. Im new to Jackson, and have never lived in an area with tornado risks. Someone mentioned the 2008 tornado to me and I looked it up. Terrifying! Big storm supposedly rolling in this evening...I'm hoping its just rain and not history repeating itself!

  • I suare that West Tennessee has more tornadoes than anywhere!!

  • @1zackdude

Statistically Texas holds that title (Kansas for the most F4 and F5 twisters).

  • this was he best tornado i have saw im 12 and i have saw 18 tornadoes and they were great hey were you livng there in jackson when it went on the highway or downtown jackson

  • i was so scared during this

  • i live in jackson ,tn i remembrer the tornado i was only 8 i was so scared and i could not stop crying

  • sure is good to have God on your side

  • Thanks for the video. It was intense. It is amazing no was killed. I was at work in Lexington when tornado struck and the company did not even tell us when we were under a tornado warning.

  • i was watching the news for hours and then when it got bad i went to the shelter and we heard the tornado......we live pretty close to union. we were there for hours and then after that the night seemed like satan like brought hell on earth or sumthing........my best freind Ryan Cowen was killed in the jackson tornado in fall of 2003. RIP

  • my daddy was playing the wii when this happened and got mad when it turned off and it didnt save his game lol. i was in the crouching position in the hall.

  • "whatchya'll think that is?"

"i don't know but it doesn't sound good!"

    lol

  • i live right down the street from union lol on walker rd.

  • I live in Cherry Grove too......it barely missed us...THANK GOD!!

  • this video got put on a tornado show on Discovery Channel

  • I watched that too!

  • is was a F2 but 10 minutes after is hitted is was a EF4

  • I was out that night I was on top of the parkin garage hospital saw like 3 of em and then i went union it was badd

  • You guys were lucky, this tornado was later rated at EF4 with winds estimated at 170 M.P.H.

  • This is probably a good example of what survivors of this killer storm experienced; hearing the sound like a freight train

  • i think they sound more like a large waterfall!

  • I live about 5 minutes from Union, off of Old Humboldt. We had a very strange experience. At about the time that the tornado hit Union, we heard complete silence at our house. No rain, no wind, no nothing. Just dead silence. I don't remember much about the tornadoes in previous years here, but I will never forget what happened on Feb. 5.

  • oh crap thats off of 40

    mighta been near there

  • we got a samething as there

  • south bend, indiana tornado

    augset 4, 2008 10:38pm

  • I live about a mile away and me and my mother were in our hallway when the local weather said a tornado was hitting Union. As soon as it said the tornado was hitting Union, our power went out and the house started swaying. We had pieces of Walgreen's and the nursing home in our yard.

  • Amazing U all didn't get hurt from flying debris !

  • Quite an eerie video. I know people who were in this tornado. No fatalities.

  • I was at Cumberland University that night and I remember watching TV in the basement of Labry Hall because we were told we might be in the path of one. I know that when we were seeing footage of what was happening we all went quiet and I just know that everyone I was with was praying. Even though we were on a different campus on the other side of TN it seemed too close to home; thats why so many pilled in a van a few days later and went to help with clean up. Us colleges gotta stick together.

  • OMG..... i just watched this video and in about the 38th second a car drives onto the screen. i'm pretty sure thats my car....

  • that night was absolutely crazy...I was in Ebersold 10, and my room got completely ripped away from the first floor. Seeing this just reminds me how blessed we are that no one was killed. And now all the new dorms are almost built :)

  • OMG i wasnt even there and it makes me feel all cold! did anyone die?

  • WOOPS pasted this too soon!

  • wow just watching the first minute and hearing that noise getting louder and louder just makes your heart beat fast. thats freaking scary

  • Wow, thats amazing footage. I have actually been looking for a video of someone who took a video while everything was going down that night.

I couldnt help but tear up. That night changed my life.

  • its so amazing because you can hear the ridiculous noise. its a definite tornado. but how did you know? nothing was moving near you. how did you know it was a tornado? it was so dark.

  • I think because of the sound and what you hear going on, you know what it is!

  • even though it looks dark in the video, it actually wasn't that dark in real life. when I yelled "there's a tornado right there!" I can clearly see the funnel and debris flying around. thanks for the question!

  • @mbgodfollower

Not to mention that the body knows when something's wrong. When your stomach tightens and your body feels weightless, it's your body's way of telling you to haul ass outta there (more often than not it's right).

  • @cocothecat001 i was here when it happened well not at his house just in jackson cuz i was there! it was an f4 actully it was 2 torndoes

  • @cocothecat001 have you ever heard that right before a tornado hits, it get really silent and nothing moves.... that's crazy and I guess its true. woooo lol

  • wow... this video is amazing. i live on moize cutoff with my boyfriend and we were in the walgreens on north highland. when the tornado hit. it was the same one that hit union. it destroyed the store and i'm telling you, the noise i heard is just like the one you caught on film. that's a sound that never leaves you. we went in the freezer, and that was the only part of the store that wasn't destroyed.

  • It was nice of you to try and help people. Great human drama footage!

  • I remember taking guitar lessons in the Music Hall. This is terrible and shocking. I lived off of Oil Well by the way.

  • Fascinating video guys. I've heard that roar before; a nighttime tornado 34 years ago which wrecked my family's Georgia home. That frightening experience is why I'm a storm spotter/ chaser today. Thanks for sharing....I'm thankful ya'll were missed by the tornado and are okay.

  • i live 2 hours north of jackson in mayfield, ky...i remember the last one that went through jackson years ago that did alot of damage

2 years ago, I seen the tornado that hit Bradford. I was comin back from Alabama that day and turned around just outside of Milan...TN is just a haven for Tornadoes

  • That was one of the worst nights of my life. This video definately took me back to being in my dorm room that night. I am so grateful to be alive and it is a true blessing that no one was killed.

  • I live in the Ashport area, by the fire station that got demolished. That's definitely the sound we heard...from inside the house. Sounded nothing like a freight train, more like just howling, screaming wind.

  • I paused this thing several different times and at 01:00....right after, "It's a tornado..get in that house" you can just barely see it.

Was that a scream right before that comming from outside?

    Sounded like a 747 didn't it?

  • It was actually a little dog flipping out and barking, because of the sound of the tornado (and probably the vibration from the tornado also). Sure did sound like a 747!

  • This is wild...i was on campus at the time...it sounded just like that except 10 times worse...power did the same in the dorm...brings back some scary memories...
