Mediant -with a "t"- from the Latin "Mediante" which means "in the middle", because the third is the note halfway (in terms of letter counting) between the tonic (I) and the dominant (V). For example, in a major C chord you'll have the tonic (C), the mediant (E) and the dominant (G).
