Though i love Guy Mitchell's version of this song...you gotta tip the hat to Marty Robbins when it comes to singing 'Singin' the Blues ! Marty Robbins 'owns' this song. Just like Judy Garland 'owns' 'Over the Rainbow' and Patsy Cline owns ' I fall to pieces' Robbins reigns S-U-P-R-E-M-E ! BMOC ! Marty being one of the GREATEST talents, ever,in the country music pantheon of American heroes !!! Brad Savage --Lifelong Fan.
Sorry, Marty did NOT write this. It was written by Melvin Endsley, Endsley wrote "Singing the Blues" in 1954. The following year, he took the song to Nashville's Grand Ole Opry to pitch it backstage. In 1956, Marty Robbins recorded the song, which is credited with putting Robbins on the map. Endsley's writing talents were in high demand, after Robbins success with "Singing the Blues". The song became a number 1 record for Marty Robbins, Guy Mitchell, & Tommy Steele on various various charts.
@mrfiddleman i really never got on board the Marty train till about 1960.I love all Marty tunes but i think Guy Mitchell owns this tune.remember Marty made the first Long tune"El Paso"i believe 4:03.as far as i'm concerned the first Marty smash was "A White Sport Coat"in 56-57.what i really like about him though was his ability to tell a great story.(Alamo or Streets of Laredo or Big Iron).
One of two hits that Marty Robbins shared with Columbia labelmate Guy Mitchell (the other being the utterly stupendous Knee Deep In The Blues). Great stuff!
I was 4 - my mom had this 78 and I remember her playing it! To this day it is one of my all time favorite country songs. Thank you so much for this glorious color clip!!
Is he on the set of Hee Haw?
