  • That is one incredible horse!!

  • The standard of Greatness is in the number of years their accomplishment remains. Let's just remember 1:59 2/5 and 2:24 and know that no horse before of since has broken 2:00 at Churchill Downs (Accept Sham) and no horse has ever run Belmont faster that 2:26. Secretariat did it in 2:24. the distance that two seconds at that speed is something like 13-15 lengths. Secretariat lives in the presence of the God's.

  • Secretariat was the best horse that I have ever seen, I have the book of his life and every time I read it I cry one cause I'm happy and when it comes to the end the way he died. When Penny had to say goodbye for the last time to the super horse makes me break into tears cause of how hard it had to be, people say that he was just a race horse no He was Secretariat. WE LOVE YOU SECRETARIAT

  • @saddlebred553 Please tell me which book you read about Secretariat. I want to get one but there are a few out there and I want the best one. If I could afford it, I would get them all. :) I LOVE this horse!! ♥

  • @kwgrid I have "Secretariat's Meadow" and also Raymond G. Woolfe's book, "Secretariat." Plus I've googled and read tons of articles online and utube interviews. I haven't read Bill Nack's book so I don't know how good it is. Of the two books I have, Raymond Woolfe's is the best. Lots and lots of great pics and little details. :)

  • @kwgrid Bill Nack's is phenomenal and truly fitting for Secretariat. The imagery he gives is wonderful and puts you right there in the paddock with Big Red, it's a must buy and a must read.

  • Secretariat was BY FAR the greatest race horse of all time. There is no debating this point. Anyone who knows horse racing knows this. It's a shame there are such ignorant nuts that post such dumb comments. I'm impressed this idiot can even type.

  • This was the greatest race horse America has ever known. His records have not been and in my opinion never will be matched at any of the triple crown tracks. Big Red you were a magnificent animal and one of the greatest "athletes ever". I just wish I could have seen you before you passed on.

  • Mrs. Chenery was all class, but she was also as tough as nails.

  • Thanks for telling us all what terrific athlete Secretariat was. What champion!!

  • The three hacks that disliked this video must have a small heart! I wish I could have been alive to see this horse race.

  • Secretariat was a force of nature.

  • He died the year I was born.

  • always loved this horse....flawless !

  • I am far from a horse racing expert, but I remember Secretariat's Triple Crown run like it was yesterday. I was 15 years old at the time. Who could ever forget the way he obliterated the field at the Belmont? It put an exclamation point to his magnificent career. It was obvious I was watching one of the greatest athletes in history--human or otherwise.

  • What an amazing horse!!!!!!!

Secretariat ran each quarter faster then the next

smashed the BELMONT track record by over 2 seconds

broke all triple crown records he was probably the best ever.

I think you could compare bigred to Makybe Diva if you follow racing

she was bred out of desert king and tugela

3 Melbourne cups (international racing event) over 3200m

The biggest racing event in Australia she won in 2003, 2004 and 2005

Something no horse will ever do again just like big red.

  • THANK YOU cf1970 for posting. I collect Secretariat items & put them on display during my Triple Crown parties which is always a hit with guests. I love the fact that your video points out about the size of Secretariat's Heart. The heart is the source of love and "Big Red" showed the power of love - love of running, love of racing, love of people, love of life. . .there will probably never be another one like him! Best Wishes To You.

  • That was a wonderful video on Big Red. I especially liked the clip when he's romping in his paddock and comes right up to the camera. He looked so playful and happy, yet so majestic at the same time. I recently made kind of a tribute video about this horse, but many hours later it wasn't showing up in the search. I thought there was something wrong with my channel. So I posted it yet again on another - sure enough it still won't show! I'll wait this time. I used some of your great footage.

  • Yes I was pleasantly surprised by how good the movie "Secretariat" was. They did a very respectable job considering the task of creating compelling entertainment while documenting the greatest racehorse that ever lived. Watch it in spectacular blu ray.

  • Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but please rent the movie, "Secretariat". It gives a terrific portrayal of Secretariat himself, the owner, Penny, Lucien, the trainer, the jockey, Ron Turcott and many others involved in the story and legend of this amazing animal....totally worth the time to see it and a great movie for the family !

  • Sometimes in my life I am so grateful to be alive when something happens. Being around during Secretariat's reign which will never be equaled is one of them. I am so glad that I have lived in a time where Secretariat was here!!! Most gorgeous, amazing, horse ever.

  • I remember him, and I thank you for posting this and sharing your love for him. Secretariat will never be equaled.

I saw him once, when he was in retirement.

I once read what some one else wrote about him, and it stays in my mind; "Secretariat was an angel, sent here to show us what magnificent gifts animals are. He was not of this earth."

  • I wish I could have seen this horse in person. What a real gift in life to be in the presence of such a horse. We all can learn something great from his life. I just wish I wasent two years old when he was doing all this. My hats off to all the people who were part of his life and thank you Secretariat for makeing this world a better place.

  • What's amazing is that Sham's heart was also bigger than normal. Sham gets overshadowed by Secretariat but that horse is also one of the greatest of all time. 1973 saw two great competitors and champions.

  • @uberathlete I agree, Sham was great, but he just met something greater. At necropsy Shams heart was a whopping 18 pounds, while Secretariats was an astonishing 22 pounds. Both were great horses, but only one can be the best.

  • Usain Bolt got nothing on Big Red.

  • I can't believed I missed the Belmont Stakes 1973. What a wonderful horse he was.

Hm, let's see if this century will bring some superhorses as well; if I'm still alive in the year 2100, I'll be interested to take a look at the Top 100 racehorses of this century, remembering Rachel Alexandra & Zenyatta...

Can't wait for Rainaways racing career to start. =)

  • Mind that Bird was a better champion than Secretariat.

  • Let's be realistic here...although he is a good horse, he really isn't in Secretariat's league. Your MO is inflammatory and silly. By the way, his name is MINE That Bird. The other obscene, disgusting comments you tried to post will never be allowed on this channel. Your classless handiwork around YouTube shows just how much of a deviant pervert you are. You need serious mental help, and I truly hope you get it before you get physically hurt by someone who has no patience or restraint.

    Blocked.

  • @cf1970 well said. what an idiot.

  • Thank you from all of us who love and remember Big Red for blocking this clueless individual and his gratuitous remarks, Big Red's triple crown and records speak volumes!

  • @mstrunn You're very welcome, and I appreciate the kind support. The offending party has since closed his account, but not before slinging mud at me on another video in a childish attempt to inflame me into a bad response. It's sad that there are people out there who seek nothing but to cause trouble in that way.

Regardless of all that, Big Red and his racing record stand alone in my books; there will never be another to match him.

I wish you a prosperous and happy new year.

  • @yourdickis2limp You don't seem to know anything about Secretariat. Some of his time records are still unbeaten, he produced many champs (for example Lady's Secret, horse of the year 1996) & good breedmares. He was the perfect horse; the only thing that showed he wasn't divine was when he died. His life earnings are higher then those of Mine That Bird or probably even higher then yours. The only horse which would have at least a small chance against him was Ruffian. Get a life, and a username.

  • The classist and greatest athlete of all time...!!!!!

  • Damn, I miss Big Red !

  • The race caller's comments during the Belmont Stakes " He's moving like a tremendous machine" says it all about this mighty horse.

  • The voice has no clue that socks are a natural marking that doesn't effect the bones....

  • Wow!!

  • that is one incredible performer! Beautiful and lovable to! =]

  • secretariat was one racehorse who loved to run!

  • Oh, what an amazing animal. Secretariat was so special he will be remembered forever.

  • THE BEST HORSE EVER

  • The greatest ever.... magnificent animal!

  • Very right word - CHARISMA!!!

  • I love this video so much! What a wonderful tribute to this great horse, Secretariat. The only thing that could make it "perfect" is if his race in the Preakness was included (which I find the most thrilling of all his races to watch). But gfn02 does have the 1973 Preakness on a different video, and it's really quite good.

  • Who would dislike this video? Its about Secretariat!! haha

  • @SecretariatFanForeva Sham's owner : )

  • The greatest non-human athlete in world history.

  • @bigfilmhat agreed.

  • Very enjoyable video. Saw Secretariat in 1984 at Claiborne Farm along with Riva Ridge (won two of the TC races in 1972) and others standing at stud. Riva Ridge was a beautiful, outgoing, sweet tempered horse. Secretariat was also an extrovert, a real ham who could quickly detect someone with a camera or a carrot. Yet his bearing had a dignity of "somethingroyal." Glad I got to meet him because his racing was only part of the story. His personality was the other part.

  • @THE0591301 Did you bring him a carrot?! that would be the highlight of my LIFE lol(=

  • @THE0591301 how I envy you. It warms my heart when I read of his personality. Read that he wld mosey up to an admirer at his paddock fence, give impression he wanted to be petted and wld drop a mouth full of grass in their hand.

  • He was a tremedous machine...Man of War was a great horse, Phar Lap was a great horse but BIG RED was the greatest of all time. The Kentucy Derby and Belmont times set by him are still the track records today and will probably never be broken by today's horse's.

  • the new movie was fantastic

  • cf1970.....Thank you for uploding the complete video of the 1973 Triple Crown....what a treat....I did this comment over here since youtube didn't accept my comment on that video.....not know the reason?..........

  • Horses back in them days were alot chunkier, and looked stronger, i think alot of them now are fragile and weak looking :/

  • The most beautiful animal ever.Dont know who came up with the name Secretariat, but it is the only name that could have fit him.The name is both powerful and elegant at the same time.Watching the 73 Belmont ,never gets old.

  • So wonderful to see this and all the footage of Secretariat. He was amazing. I never quite knew till now how much though. I was just a young kid then and didn't know the details and all. He truly was a horse (race horse) for the public. It's almost like nobody heard of racing much until he came along. I admired and loved that horse inside. Always remembered the big tadoo he got everywhere. It was great! He deserves every honor and tribute.

  • Just an awesome story! Love the movie and such an Amazing Horse!! The Lord sure gave this horse wings!

  • "O Rare Secreatriat"

  • Saw the movie last night. Moved me to tears, what heart ,what a true masterpiece from the Lord. There will never be another, and for him to be euthanised was such a tragedy.

  • @saviortpc It was a tragedy for him to get laminitis, euthanasia was the only humane option. 19 is kindof young though

  • This horse was so special, it was as if he came right out of Heaven. I do not believe we will see another like him. God surely had His Hand on that horse.

  • GREATEST HORSE TO EVER LIVE

    THE ONE AND ONLY

    SECRETARIAT:)

  • I remember the 1973 Belmont, I was 9 years old, and watching with my father who specifically told me to watch "this horse here" and pointed to Secretariat. As Secretariat came down the homestretch I remember asking " Where are the other horses?" and my father said "Call them all Also Ran..." I only wish I could have seen him run in person, what a thrill that must have been.

    T.Hale

  • Great post...thanks!!!!

  • He did things that are indescribable!!

  • the movie is great

  • They should definitely make a movie on Native Diver also! He broke records way beyond a 2-year-old. His story is incredible. He loved to race, is a Hall of Famer, and buried at the finish line at Hollywood Park. When he died, all mourned. What a beauty.

  • I remember watch each of the Triple Crown races on TV that year, it was truly amazing.

  • wonderfull ! thanx soo much for putting this up !

  • What a magnificent animal that left a lasting legacy. Even now, nearly forty years after his accomplishment, his ability continues through his daughter, Terlingua, to her infamous son, Storm Cat.

I wait with bated breath for the movie, but worry that like so many horse stories, it will be butchered to suit an audience that has little true grasp of equine reality. I will hold out hope though.

  • Tears in my eyes! I wish they would've talked at least a little about Secretariat's relationship with Eddie Sweat- his indespensible groom! I seriously cannot wait for the movie to come out this fall!!

  • that was truly enjoyable--- Thank you

  • I am looking forward to the movie based on the Chenery and her horse...

  • Something I've noticed that almost always gets overlooked somehow is that Secretariat not only set the Belmont record but also set a WORLD RECORD for the mile and a half (on dirt) that stands TO THIS DAY. I've triple checked the info, but this from Wikipedia: "Secretariat's world record still stands, and in fact, no other horse has ever broken 2:25 for 1½ miles on dirt." A full second all these years later! Will never be broken.

  • @ebcebcebc123123123 I also believe this record could stand forever, unless sometime in the future they come up with a bio-mechanical horse with a supercharged engine. This horse was moving at around 40 mph for this race, which is an amazing speed for a horse. Try riding in an open car at 40 mph, and see what the wind feels like. Truly amazing.

  • it's quite odd.....his greatness so trancended the sport he became an iconic figured that, much like other great athletes, is a testament to the greatest we can be. you get that when you hear Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky. Muhammad Ali....the type of incredible force for that age that no one had ever seen before. Secretariat is a friggin HORSE and we look at him that way, that he represents the greatest. awesome, damn.

  • cant wait for the movie

  • I remember watching this horse at the victory ceremony on TV....he was like a victory spirit majestic pure it impressed me so much i remember to this day...than you... rjmendera

  • We're praying for ya Penny!

  • It should have been illegal for one horse to possess such a supernatural array of abilities... My God, his competition at the Belmont weren't even close enough to eat his dust!

  • What I would have given to see him run

  • Thank you for this Video, What an amazing horse and what an amazing owner!

  • Penny collaborated on the upcoming movie

  • Thank you for letting me relive seeing Secretariat. I saw all the races as a 20 year old and loved this horse so much. He was truly magnificant.

  • @NicholsFan You saw the real thing, actually at all his races?? Lucky you, if that's what you meant. WOW

  • Never before,never since,never again,a Secretariat !!!

  • Secretariat was Horse of the Year as a 2yr.old in 1972. Do you know how rare, to unheard of that is? It's even really rare for a 3yr.old to win HOY, but completely unheard of for a 2yr.old to win it. No horse in racing history could have beaten Secretariat in the 73' Belmont Stakes!!! NONE!!! It was, and will remain the single most intimidating performance ever accomplished by a thoroughbred, ever in racing, IMO.

  • incredible running machine!

I don't think we'll ever see anything like his performance in the Belmont again

  • I have watched Secretariat at the Belmont 500 times and I still sob whenever I see the footage. I literally break down and cry every time. Perfection.

  • I get teary eyed any time I watch him, he was so beautiful. What gets me is during the Belmont, he was hardly even running. Just big even, almost casual, strides that ate up ground. Compare him to the other horses and you can see the difference in the leg "speed." I bet he could have even given more if needed.

  • I enjoyed this very much ... Thank you

  • is penny still alive?.....great horse,,,

  • @dapplegray98 Yes, she is still alive, but, sadly, has suffered heart attacks in recent years. Here's hoping she is blessed with many more years of good health.

  • @cf1970 thats good to no bless her heart...

  • @cf1970 You know I saw her on Oct 2 when I watched the Lady's Secret Stakes. She'd come to see Zenyatta race. She was walking w/a walker but her mind was still a steal trap. She was just thrilled to be there. I think she is either 90 or in her early 90s. She's something else...

  • @dapplegray98 Yes she is!

  • @dapplegray98 The Greatest Horse...

  • @dapplegray98 - if you have seen the movie Secretariat.. you should have seen her in the last part. :)

  • Greatest horse the Lord ever made!!!!

  • I totally agree. I doubt we'll ever see any horse like him again. I'm also old enough to remember seeing his TC races on TV. Sheer perfection!

  • Oh, God ... whenever I get depressed about getting older, I remember Secretariat, and kick myself. What if I was too young to remember him? Wouldn't it be awful?

Jesus, we love you Big Red.

  • Iron Constitution?-Something tells me that this horse also had an appetite. It would be funny if the horse could talk, and from beyond the grave he said:

"Actually, I ran so hard because everytime I did, they gave me extra apples for dinner. Man, if they had given me just one more apple for the Belmont, I would have probably asked to beat the others by 30.

  • Can't help feeling this is true!

    :) Great one!

  • @shadowkitty56-You are correct about Secretariat's appetite! From the book "The Horse God Made"- " After his Ky. Derby win, his groom Eddie rewarded Secretariat with an enormous feast-6 qts. of oats, 1 qt. of sweet feed, 2 qts. of bran, and several carrots" Wow! That's a ton of food, even for a horse! And BTW? Secretariat won the Belmont by 31 lengths, one more length than the 30 that you suggest. I'm sure he was fed very well after that race, too!

  • So great to see him sans saddle, running around and really showing his tremendous personality. He was truly poetry in motion. I'm not even part of the horse world but I remember even years later I would always wonder how he was doing, where he was, and wished we could see him again. Once in awhile they would show him on a news clip. So glad I was alive to watch him win that Triple Crown!!

  • 7:00 to 7:23 Perfect!! Pat Day has a big engine

    too!!! This is a great!!!

  • Oh sweet Jesus, the neck the neck the neck. Look at that neck, it looks like a bulls neck.

  • I know ... incredible that a horse's neck can make you want to burst into tears!

  • cf1970, another great video. I liked the quality of the Derby footage. Maybe there is a clean copy out there somewhere. I remember seeing a clean clip of the Belmont one year in the preview show. Probably a reel on a shelf somewhere in the CBS archives...

  • AH,, I remember watching the Belmont and not believieng what I ws seeing ( I was born in '46}

-one white foot-buy a horse, two white feet, try a horse, THREE white feet, look well about him, four white feet do without him.

  • Did this horse even have a single conformation flaw at all?? He looks absolutely perfect- like artwork.

  • i had a poster of him on my wall as a young girl--and i wept in 1989 when he passed! one of the most magnificant animals ever on this earth!

    run on Big Red....run on

    Pony

  • I knew a Secretariat grandson. He wasn't any use at the track, but he was God's hunter, and he was kind. Mary had any amount of spinal fusions, and they would ride up and down rural roads for hours together. He looked after her. If I recall, his name was Bolden. Pretty old thing. He definitely got the old man's temperament, if not the talent.

  • 224............next!

  • Can't wait for the movie!

  • Thanks cf for this documentary on Secretariat-what an animal-they are working on a movie about him. The'll never be another in our lifetime.

  • - i am so excited... I am buying a great granddaughter of this horse next week :-)

gosh - what an amazing animal

  • Best of luck!!! your horse will have a royal bloodline !!!

  • 0:34 - Could also very well be the sexiest horse of all time. The Brad Pitt of horses.

  • and fm 1: thru 1:30... not bad either, look at that coat ! Watch how he walks, his hind legs, read one guy said Secretariat had so much muscle, he didn't walk, he waddled.

  • Great video!!!

He was awesome! I liked the part where she explains how a horse inherits the BIG sized hearts.

  • He didnt accelerate through the entire Belmont..they got that wrong...he did that at the Derby. But obviously his 2:24 is impossible to think about split-wise. The best horse to ever run on a track.

  • that's right, they got several things wrong in this video... but imagine if he had accelerated, if Turcotte urged him at some point. We'd be talking what, 2:23 +?

  • He's running like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE! Belmont time, 2:24. Distance, 1.5 miles. Average speed = 37.5 mph. I think I'll give this horse 5 stars.

  • I was working at my summer saleperson job when he won the Belmont. People throughout the store stopped and stared at the tv screens. For me, it was a moment in time I will always know where I was. Entranced by a creature who truly was God's chariott.

  • Secretariat was a case of the horse needed the jockey for technical purposes only.

  • I have never been a horse person, and I was 4 when won The Triple Crown, but I love this horse!

  • Greatest Racehorse to ever grace the track.

  • Thankyou so much for this video!! May GOD BLESS YOU

  • Thank you for that video. The most magnificent horse of our lifetime.

  • And people wonder why I love youtube so much. It is so wonderful to be able to relive these great moments. I so well remember how excited I was when I saw the 1973 Belmont Stakes. I fell in love with this horse.

  • I remember seeing him at Claiborne Farms when I was a 14 yr old boy at Adolph Rupps basketball camp when he was at "stud" He was the most magnificent horse I have ever seen. He was large, strong and perfect. I will never forget that moment.........

  • lucky YOU !!

  • Secretariat was the best racehorse ever!!

  • AMEN! He was absolutely magnificent. I have never seen another like him! I will never forget him!

  • I must travel anytime in my live to new york to see his statue in bolmont and to visit his grave!!

i´m a great fan of him and he is for me the king of all time!!

  • We will never see his like in our lifetime again. He was and is the greatest racehorse I have ever seen.

  • Every video I see of him can't help but notice that when he puts on a burst of speed the rhythm of his stride changes: his shoulders come up higher and the intervals are equal between his footfalls --his legs look like the spokes on a wheel, and sometimes the front legs are moving sp fast they are just a blur.

  • CF - you post the best vids!

Secretariat = mega rock star!! :-)

  • Happy belated birthday to a horse I have loved since childhood. He was the greatest there ever was. I can see him running around Horsey Heaven.

  • Today March 30, 1970 secretariat was born and that big heart would change racing forever....................2:24 forever!

  • Glad someone does. None of the big wigs from Secretariat's stables, including jockey Ron T., came to Eddie Sweat's funeral. Sweat was very sad about the death of his favorite horse. They were like soul-mates. Thanks for responding.

  • One person not mentioned in this video is Secretariat's GROOM, Eddie Sweat. Sweat, an African-American, was with Secretariat (also Riva Ridge) the whole time and gave his heart to the magnificant horse. I would have liked to have heard some comments from Eddie. Grooms have an important place in horse racing. Penny should have mentioned Eddie!!

  • Hear, hear. Couldn't agree more.

  • I agree too!

  • He was a HERO!!!

  • cf, where does this video come from? Boy, wouldn't it have been a thrill to visit Big Red in his paddock at Claiborne. I would have taken off running down the fence just to see him race me! I think from his personality he'd thought that was great fun. Of course, he'd have been laughing at my speed!

  • This video is from the History Channel DVD "Win, Place, Show: The History Of Horse Racing." It was included with the fine book "The Most Glorious Crown" (Hardcover); very affordable at many outlets.

I agree with you; running alongside that big boy would have been awesome. When I first watched this video and Secretariat ran up to the fence and stuck his nose into the camera, it was like I was meeting him in person. It touched me deeply. I just wish I could have met him in the flesh.

    Take care.

  • I envy you!!! Thanks for sharing the story:-)

I think he was the only creature born on this earth that was a gift from God!

  • It's just too bad no one got to see this horse as a 4-5 yr old. I can only imagine what he might have done then. When you're considered the greatest horse ever and dont even run as a 4-yr old you know you accomplished some impossible things.

  • God's Horse

  • I love Secretariat don't get me wrong, but poor poor Sham, such a great racer got clouded over.

  • Yes, I feel sorry for Sham, too. When he died, vets found that Sham's heart was also second in size to Secretariat. But, still, he was a champion who never gave up. Thanks for mentioning Sham!

  • This horse sired a winner of the richest handicap race in the world, the Melbourne Cup in 1990. His son Kingston Rule broke the track record in winning the Melbourne Cup.

That track record still stands today.

  • Being from Ireland American horse racing was not something on my radar. Also Im a bigger Jumps racing fan than flat racing - but these days we get American racing on TV and I watched Big Brown try to emulate the past Triple Crown winners - When they mentioned Big Red and his unbelievable mid race moves I got on Youtube and found this and other gems. Well done to you CF. I could watch this over and over its so compelling. 'In the Belmont you saw perfection !' We surely did !

  • So long as we're fact-checking, they didn't just whiff in inaccurately crediting him with negative splitting in the Belmont instead of the Derby.

To wit, from 4:57 : "...but to become the first horse in 22 years to win the Triple Crown, he would have to..."

Oh dear. Of course, it was in fact exactly a quarter of a century since Citation last won it in '48.

Anyway, gorgeous vid. The clarity in the standard quality setting is so good, I'm afraid to click on the "high quality" option!

  • 1. My, that "first horse in 22 years" error is a glaring one. I'd actually never noticed that before! I always concentrated on the video and seeing Big Red. Well, having overlooked that so many times myself until now, it tells me that the producers, editors or whoever likely made a simple oversight as incorrect numbers can be missed very easily in scripts. I'd be interested to know just how quickly this DVD was put together; they may have rushed it's production, causing the bad errors.

  • 2. Glad you liked the video. Please do click the HQ option, it's actually the correct aspect ratio of 4:3. I'd get into why the videos differ in size, but suffice it to say that YouTube modified and messed about with optimum video upload parameters a while back.

Thanks for the comments, and the heads up.

  • Secretariat's Belmont was phenomenal, but it was the Kentucky Derby, NOT the Belmont, in which he ran each quarter faster. I suspect

the error is a matter of poor editing.

Secretariat ran the first 6 furlongs (the first half of the Belmont)in 1:09 4/5. Doubled, that would be 2:19 3/4! In reality, he ran the 12 furlongs of the Belmont in 2:24, a world record on dirt. His split time for 1 1/4 miles in the Belmont was 1:59 -- he ran his final quarter in 25 seconds flat. He was slowing down.

  • Thank you. That bad error has been mentioned here earlier, but I agree with you, it likely was an editing mistake or something of the sort.

Most horses wish they could do as well slowing down. Secretariat actually broke records easing up through an extra furlong in the 1973 Belmont Stakes (2:37 3/5), 1973 Marlboro Cup (1:57 4/5), and equaled the fastest 1 5/8 mile record for ANY surface in the 1973 Man o' War Stakes (2:37 4/5), Secretariat's first effort on grass.

    Take care.

  • As a 12 year old boy I watched him on TV. In 1982 I met him in person at Claiborne Farms. I was the first to reach his pasture. He did EXACTLY what the man describes in the video. He looked at me from across the pasture, ran directly at me and skidded to a stop, then ran the entire fence line and stopped right in front of me. The most intelligent and magnificent horse I will ever meet. I think he was half human. Words and video can't do justice. You have to have met him. Remarkable animal.

  • You are so fortunate! I sure wish I could have met Big Red...watching this video made me feel, in a way, that I was right there meeting him, it made my week when I first saw this. Secretariat was magnificent magnificence!

    Thanks for sharing your memories.

  • I wasn't a horse fan at all before meeting Secretariat. My personal experience changed all that. Every equine enthusiast should have had the chance to meet him. Sorry you never got the chance. He was something else.

  • Its funny,in Nack's book on Big Red,he commented on how mrs.Tweedy and Lauren were upset when he made that early move in the Preakness. They thought Turcotte was blowing it. Well I guess that vanished after the win.

  • This horse was magnificent! Thanks for sharing this excellent documentary! Wonderful video!

  • Secratariats grandson is at the stable where i ride great vid

  • Poor Sham got unlucky that he had this wonderful blazing colt in the same age as him.

  • Sham is no doubt the greatest - Secretariat was the ultimate... little to many is unknown what he went through in both Derby and Belmont he is a true champion to me

  • I was fortunate enough to see all the three races on TV and could not believe my eyes. This horse is the best that I have ever seen. I kinow there were other great horses such as Citation and Man o' War before him but I did not see them. I saw this horse and Secretariat was God's gift to horse world.

  • wow those people are lucky that the got to own him or ride him or at least know him he was such a lovly horse and sooo strong i miss him so much. R.I.P BIG PRETTY BOY!

  • I am so crying watching this video. I love this horse! I watched him in all three of the triple crown races, and, as far as I'm concerned, this is the BEST HORSE THAT EVER LIVED! Thank you so much for this.

  • Is he still alive or did he die?

  • Secretariat had to be humanely euthanized due to incurable laminitis in 1989.

  • My Mother and Grandmother were vactioning in Greece when Big Red was lost. Mom told me that the name; SECRETARIAT appeared on the front page of every major European newspaper when he died. He was truly special.

  • I am so glad to have the chance to see this video and a wonderful part of sports history. What a magnificent horse. Thank you.

  • Thank you, everyone, for your kind comments and viewership. I'm happy you've enjoyed this video.
