thanks alot for that info. i have 40lbs to lose before i reach goal and honestly b4 asylum strength i haven't done weights in years becuz i said i'm going to lose the weight first then weights, i'm going to try this atleast once a wk. doing asylum and see how it works out. thx alot. luv, luv ur arms btw!!
I love weights, my problem is that I don't like cardio. I did P90X and it worked awesome! Although I find it easier to work out at the gym so I don't have the kids getting in my way. Really helps having a workout buddy who loves to bench press and do pull ups with me. Keeps me motivated. You look great!!
Also you have to eat enough protein to gain muscle you can't make muscles out of thin air!! It takes a long time (and probably steroids!) to get big bulging muscles so I wouldn't worry too much about that. However if you're really skinny-fat, that means you're dough on canes and you want to get toned, then you really need to build muscle or else losing all the fat will just make you look like a house elf in the Harry Potter films.
First of all I'm a guy so I'm not the intended audience
Apart from strengthening respiratory system/heart if it's intense enough, cardio will just turn fat into heat and motion, unless you crank the resistance to the max on your bike/elliptical trainer or you're fat and use the stair climber/running machine with grade (that will build some nice muscle.)
You know, even with all the facts I know (that you've mentioned) I still HATE weight training lol. Im such a cardioholic even though I know weight training has giving me faster results, I just dont like it. I've seen guys do 30-45 minute weight training workouts while I've been on the treadmill, elliptical, etc for 2 hours with less results. Of course genetics play a part but I think like most women I just don't like weight training. I need to sweat to feel like Im doing something.
@boomboomgirl You use more energy as you do more total mechanical work in cardio, as the distances are much longer i.e. Weight training - moving 50kg 5metres, cardio - moving 10kg 2000metres.
I think some women don't like weight training because of the temporary aches and pains it causes as the muscles heal and grow, and being pushed to max strength feels uncomfortable compared to humming away on a bicycle/elliptical that increases breathing but doesn't cause much burning sensation in muscles.
@TimpBizkit hmmmm this is really good information. I am one of those women who cardio to death! I realized that I am not getting the definition I want in my stomach, back, should and glutes. I am slender but not defined...i guess I now know why. If this statement is true then I really feel silly (Weight training - moving 50kg 5metres, cardio - moving 10kg 2000metres.) lol. Thanks for the info.
@qmistic also consider that once you have bigger stronger muscles you can do the cardio 'more quickly' kind of like having a bigger engine in the car. That enables you to train the heart and lungs to catch up. The body thinks - if you don't need all the power you've got, why upgrade the engine?
Another word of warning is to be patient with fat loss, otherwise a lot of people will be asking "Why have I still got some fat covering over my (now piddly) muscles?" from their all day cardio and lettuce diets. Then when these same people have finally got rid of all their problem fat areas, they're left wondering why they're sporting a physique that more closely resembles the aliens on 'The First Men In The Moon' (except for no green colour) than their favourite "Miss Fitness" competitor.
@souljagurlsha I've been doing weight training and I'm a guy and I'm not incredibly bulky. My calves look good, and my thighs are quite bulky but I'm a relatively stocky build and still have a bit of a fat coating over my muscles lol
