In the older days they had a sort of black metal edge to them, and in some select songs throughout their history the compositions are very death metal. Watershed is bring back much more of a death and black metal edge, probably because of Axenrot's ridiculous drumming abilities. This is the first time he's appeared in an Opeth studio album, so I would imagine he affected the writing somewhat.
