Although the good english version, i must say the italian HAL's voice is somehow more disturbing and mesmerizing: for me the best interpretation of artificial feelings.
Even if you dont understand the words, digit "uccisione hal" on youtube search and click the first video.
I'd feel sorry for him. Then I'd remember he just killed the entire crew and is just going to try and kill me again as soon as I have to switch oxygen tanks.
@Tuckerscreator I remember when I was like 9 and I watched it, I felt so bad that I made a HAL9000 out of Legos and pretended he was real... geez thinking back on it that was kind of pathetic.
@RichardRHunt That takes skill to build a fully-functional, 45 meter long 14 ft high, fully automated and capable of advance linguistics and artificial intelligence HAL 9000 out of Lego.
Kidding, but yes, it's especially sad the way he goes...
This has to be one of the most agonizing death scenes in cinema. It just goes on and on. I didn't think it at first but have way through I realized this being was begging for his life. It totally bums me out :(
These are quite possibly the greatest five minutes ever filmed.
Every thing is so spare, and yet those who say nothing happens miss the vastness of the manifold associations that lie beneath the surface. It makes me think of Yeats' "Those images that yet
fresh images beget;
that dolphin torn,
that gong tormented sea..."
This deceptively simple scene is a bottomlessly profound meditation on language, perception, consciousness, and the ineffable.
@KayVoorhees I was just surprised at your assertiveness. I couldn't really distinguish what HAL was saying and I thought I read in a book that he said "A bicycle seat, built for two." but he doesn't say seat, so my bad. :)
@wmuir2009 I think it is. For the very first time, he mentions the word 'afraid'. I think HAL truly found out what fear was. I think HAL did not want to die. Brilliant scene.
So many genius things about this scene. Does Hal have genuine emotion? Tough to tell but I think this scene gives the most insight into the question, when he reveals he is scared for his own existence. I still can't answer the question but I enjoy the hell out of speculating about it.

I'd be scared if my computer started talking like this every time I clicked "Format". *Click* "Just what do you think you are doing, [my name]?"

Questioning: "Just what do you think you're doing, Dave?"
Sense of Entitlement: "I feel like I'm entitled to an answer to that question."
Lying: "I feel much better now. I really do."
Regret: "I know I've made some very poor decisions recently."
Fear: "I'm afraid."
Music: "Daisy, daisy..."
Death.
There, that's every quality that supposedly separates men from machines. Kubrick, you're a genius.

Creepy stuff....!!
Although I don't care for the film as a whole (although, make no mistake, I'm a HUGE Kubrick fan!), this scene is drop-dead CLASSIC cinema....!!

@TF2Fan101 Absolutely. HAL only did what he was programmed to do. The programmers were at fault, not HAL.

@Yarpsnesan once you've managed to program AI, there no stopping the computer from programming himself? yes? i'm no expert but that seems logic
