I would like to be a gun smith one day guns are lover id like more informational on everything email me at dylen.gerber@gmail.com ps I'm almost 16 and I'm looking to be an a teacher if possible
I just started at PGS this week and Gary Holloway is my instructor. He is a true asset for the school and for my career. We started on metalworking and filing and he'll catch me not using proper technique. I am glad I am corrected now at the beginning than having to relearn a good habit over a bad one that develops through such things as a sloppy technique. He has the greatest philosophy and outlook on instructing us in various taskings done in gunsmithing. They days just fly on by.
Man, this is what i wan to do i cant act like i know alot about guns cause i dont but i want to learn as much as there is to know about guns and how to make then, and restore them. I plan on attending this school in the near future
hi wondering if you would not mind looking at vidoe to see if you can help me with my gun the guy i brought it off obvously messed around with it now its all undone lol it seems simple but i cnt rap my head around it thanks jay
If you want a career/job in gunsmithing, go to school for it and do it as a side job with a more supporting job/career. Gunsmithing is for the passion more than the money, but without the money you cant buy firearms for yourself or even keep a business going. You can apply at sporting goods stores, and work for someone, you might have more financial luck. Whats being a gunsmith without owning any of your own guns?!
Im very interested in gunsmithing im just hooked to a firearm's complexity and being in the gunsmithing buisness seems like a really sweet job,I wouldn't dare screw it up.
I've been trying to request info on this school for the past 4 weeks without response. Anyone know how I can get in contact with someone from the school?

I was hoping to go to a gunsmithing school right out of highschool but on the lakewood schools website it says i must be 21 but i dont see anything about that on PGS does anyone knoe for sure the age limit?
@hamsterhamz it's deffinitely a 21 year old age limit, considering as gunsmith you're considered to make modifications for not just firearms but also handguns
@Vlaxerman343 Don't listen to this. I was 18 when I started the program, as were 3 other people in my class, and 1 student ahead of me. If you're 18 and able to buy/possess guns, you can go through the program.
@hamsterhamz Dude, i go to this school and there are some young people, you just arent allowed to build a handgun, you can still work on them and be very successful, follow your dreams buddy, the instructors are cool, the work is very enjoyable and the people you meet are gonna be your friends for life.

@hifatpeople A gunsmith has to know about everything--making guns, caring for them, restoring them, maintaining them, repairing them. Lots of knowledge for a skilled craft such as gunsmithing.
i dunno how to tell my rents i wanna be a gunsmith when im not even outa highschool, dont get me wrong im not blinded by the flashy james bond way of seeing guns as killers, or awesome things to touch. i find it extremely interesting. since ive grwon up with lego i have always been drawn to technical things, and i think guns are the coolest way to expand on that
this is actually my brothers teacher. he just got in on aug 2nd. he says if u want to make guns this a great place to do so. lots of cool people there too. first gun you work on is bolt action .22.
Unfortunately here in Australia there have been some psychos running around shooting folks in the last couple of decades that have pretty much made it a waste of time trying to earn a living as a gunsmith. I grew up with a single pellet slug gun (what you guys call a bee bee gun i think) which i practiced with religiously along with hunting after school with my dad using his deadlier weapons. When he died my mum handed all the guns into9 the police after one of the scare campaigns.
I've always had a fascination for firearms. Though I haven't had hands on opportunities to learn about firearms themselves.
So I was wondering which way I could learn about firearms. Learn everything about them. Would gunsmithing lead me to knowing all I need about firearms?
@m16mang Im thinkin of going to this school, they offer a full program to be completed in 16 months , after the 16 months you'll be fully qualified. im scheduling a tour of Pittsburgh gunsmith school this week , Id say gunsmithing would be a great job for you and teach you all you want to know , i love guns too :)
@joealonso89 generally u don't want to paint your stock. i make custom knives and finish the handles by sanding with 400 grit sand paper then make a paste with some linseed oil (murphy's oil soap also will work) and the sanding dust, then use the sand paper to rub the paste into the tiny cracks and voids. when you are done you'll have a beautiful smooth finish that is weather resistant without covering the woods natural grain
What's the point of online school for this, u need major hands on training, to me online school is like "give us the money and read this book, dam a couple of books that cost a couple of thousand", wouldn't u just go to the libary?
@Theriomalstrom touché ^^ i think the work of a gunsmith is a wonderfull between creating beautifull artworks and building deadly, effecktive weapons. sorry for my bad english....my english is not the best and i am drunk :P
@Theriomalstrom This is only the first thing you learn. After metal refinishing, you learn to make stocks, including glass bedding. Then machine work, including checking headspace. Disable the firearm so that it is stored in a safer manner. Search your local phone book or contact a local sporting goods store. Tampering with your firearm could lead to an injury of yourself or others.
well can you fix it because i don't want my parents going off on me because there a hole to my attic so can you fix it all i got is $35 so i can shipe it to you
I'm not a licensed FFL or a licensed gunsmith. Put the gun somewhere safe. Save your money and take it to someone that can repair it safely and legally. I am sorry that I cannot assist you further, but this is the best advice that I can offer.
In Pennsylvania we love most of our "good" gunsmiths. We like to hunt and shoot as much as any other hunting state, just like Texans or Vols.
Any gun company or ammunition manufacturer wanting to build a plant here is more than welcome to do so but wait till after the elections and a pro-gun governor is in office.
We would welcome such business's in pro-gun counties in central Pa like Blair, Huntington, Clearfield, Center, and Cambria to name a few.
If you don't need perfection ammonia based cleaner and aluminum foil is all you need to get rid of a rusted finish, pitting on the other hand is another story....
Shame the home of gunsmithing, the UK,no longer has anywhere that teaches this anymore.I had the fortune to apprentice to a gunsmith in a nearby city, but he's gone now,he moved to Canada!
Good vid but I bet it doesnt do the work justice, nice to know that gunsmithing isnt a lost art. Unlike so many other trades that depend upon the throw away scociety we live in today.
*sigh* All the years of university study but if I'm honest with myself, this is exactly my job. Taking a neglected weapon and restoring it to its former beauty, or even bringing it to a perfection that it has never seen before... now that's really something. Working with as well as using firearms is one of my favorite activities anyway.
Well, it's never too late to follow your dreams, right? ^_^
Amen brother, I've always wanted to do this. I'm a 25 years right now and have a desk job at multinational company, money is good, but I just hate the job.
Yeah, I can imagine that. I'd rather earn less money with a job I like.
I just kinda regret that I didn't decide much earlier that I want to follow my dream instead of going the "money route". Now with 27 I guess I'm pretty old for a new start. *shrug* But anyway, it certainly does not harm to have a bachelor degree under my belt. And I think that with the right motivation and dedication it's never too late. =)
"You Americans"? I'm born in Germany and currently living in Norway. ;-D
Yes, to begin with learning the technical skills is certainly a good idea. Many gunsmiths seem to have gradually acquired the skills and knowledge over time.
Right now I'm trying to find a gunsmith or firearms dealer nearby where I could work part-time while I complete my university degree.
Ow, my bad I thought your were American, sorry ;-P
I hope you'll find some nice place to learn gunsmith techniques, In my case it will be allot more difficult, Belgian regulations regarding firearm sucks, as a result there are almost no dealers or store around.
Anyways, I'll keep on looking, and good luck to you too mate. Follow your dreams :-)
I know, firearms regulations are overly strict in most, or even all, European countries. That's one of the reasons why I want to immigrate to Canada as soon as possible. =)
Can you take #0000 steel wool to a rusted gun and make it look okay? Yes. But that's not the RIGHT way to do it, and it will not look perfect. At the gunsmith school, they don't just take the rust out of the gun and blue it, they practically customise the finish of the gun. When a student is done with the gun, there are no machining marks, and no avoidable imperfections. The gun looks as good as it possibly can; it looks better than when it came from the factory.
@Powelly00 They do not offer these schools in Australia because those people are subjects of the crown. The crown took away your ancestors swords. Now you have no gun. FTQ
As far as the money and oppurtunities go ive talked to several gunsmiths through out the U.S. and everyone of them are more than satisfied with there incomes and have urged me to get in it as soon as possible.here in germany gunsmiths get hired all over the world and make around 70 grand to 80 grand starting out. if youre getting 11$ and hour than you must have no expeirence or learned it from the internet. ( such as colorado school of guns ) they don't teach class room just internet. this needs
hello and i have a Cooey model 60 bolt action repeater (with tublar magazine) this gun is very good. one problem the extractor clip is missing and i got some but i dont know where to to em on. could you help me?
I have a Stevens Model 29A re-branded as a Premier by Montgomery Ward with a custom stock made at the time of purchase that I'm wanting to get restored, how much do restorations cost... I think its in pretty bad shape.
"Not enough to make a living". If that was the case then there wouldn't be anyone doing now would there? I graduated from PGS and I can expect to see 11$/hr starting at most places for entry level. People live on alot less than that. Check your facts before you run your mouth off.
I have worked 5 months from Renato Gamba, 7 years in Beretta, and 2 from a little Gunsmith, now I take 19000 euros/year. I have a good experience on sidebyside and over&under, anson and holland&holland. I make Daytona-Concorde (Renato Gamba), DT10,So5,So6 and So10 (in Beretta) and collector gun at the gunsmith. In Italy this job is not paid well
$11/hr is not a living wage smart guy. you are literally considered the working poor at a wage like that. you can not make a mortgage payment, utility bills and feed yourself much less a family on 11/hr. you should try living in the real world before you run your mouth.
Thanks to all the cheap labor flooding the country, a whole lot of jobs no longer pay "living wages." Still, there's something to be said for the job satisfaction one can derive from this sort of work that just isn't found doing mindless, repetetive tasks.
Do you have ot on a gun store to be a gunsmith? Orare you always employed?.. i would like to be one.. but i dont want to be an employee in a small store... but i dont want to run it either.. HAha i dont know what i want
Well theres several places a gunsmith can get a job, both simple ones and extremely complex. 1 is to find a sports store, gun range, or gun store which all pertains to the repair, inspections, and modifications of gunsmithing. Or you can go to college and get your, mechanics, physics, electronics, and engineering degree and work for the government making heaps of cash or a big retailer such as Armatech or Remington making heaps of cash. Sooo simple to complex. You just got to start at simple.
I will be graduating in June. It was well worth the time and money spent. You learn a niche trade in under 2 years that will last you a lifetime, not the 4 years of liberal indoctrination you get at "traditional" colleges. Great school.
I am a current student at this school. The amount of knowledge that Gary possesses is amazing. BTW I am the guy working on the stock in the purple shirt even though you don't see my face.
I'm looking into going to this school and i'm just curious as to how extensive the training is. By any chance do they teach any custum work or design?

We would welcome such business's in pro-gun counties in central Pa like Blair, Huntington, Clearfield, Center, and Cambria to name a few.

If you don't need perfection ammonia based cleaner and aluminum foil is all you need to get rid of a rusted finish, pitting on the other hand is another story....

Takes a personal pride in HIS/HER---talents--a lost art these days.
"Oh it is broken!-----------who cares?-just buy a new one"

Shame the home of gunsmithing, the UK,no longer has anywhere that teaches this anymore.I had the fortune to apprentice to a gunsmith in a nearby city, but he's gone now,he moved to Canada!
silver760 2 years ago
Good vid but I bet it doesnt do the work justice, nice to know that gunsmithing isnt a lost art. Unlike so many other trades that depend upon the throw away scociety we live in today.

*sigh* All the years of university study but if I'm honest with myself, this is exactly my job. Taking a neglected weapon and restoring it to its former beauty, or even bringing it to a perfection that it has never seen before... now that's really something. Working with as well as using firearms is one of my favorite activities anyway.
Well, it's never too late to follow your dreams, right? ^_^
SkallagrimNilsson 2 years ago 2
Amen brother, I've always wanted to do this. I'm a 25 years right now and have a desk job at multinational company, money is good, but I just hate the job.
flasher555 2 years ago
Yeah, I can imagine that. I'd rather earn less money with a job I like.
I just kinda regret that I didn't decide much earlier that I want to follow my dream instead of going the "money route". Now with 27 I guess I'm pretty old for a new start. *shrug* But anyway, it certainly does not harm to have a bachelor degree under my belt. And I think that with the right motivation and dedication it's never too late. =)
SkallagrimNilsson 2 years ago
You absolutely right, I'm 25 and I won't give up on gunsmithing.
The problem for me is that there are no courses or schools that are specializing on gunsmithing (I envy you Americans).
So I will learn the machinery and basics of handling a metal for now.
flasher555 2 years ago
"You Americans"? I'm born in Germany and currently living in Norway. ;-D
Yes, to begin with learning the technical skills is certainly a good idea. Many gunsmiths seem to have gradually acquired the skills and knowledge over time.
Right now I'm trying to find a gunsmith or firearms dealer nearby where I could work part-time while I complete my university degree.
SkallagrimNilsson 2 years ago
Ow, my bad I thought your were American, sorry ;-P
I hope you'll find some nice place to learn gunsmith techniques, In my case it will be allot more difficult, Belgian regulations regarding firearm sucks, as a result there are almost no dealers or store around.
Anyways, I'll keep on looking, and good luck to you too mate. Follow your dreams :-)
flasher555 2 years ago
I know, firearms regulations are overly strict in most, or even all, European countries. That's one of the reasons why I want to immigrate to Canada as soon as possible. =)
Thanks and I wish you a successful journey too.

a single spec of rust on any of my fire arms, i will completely remove that part and get a new 1.
xGothimox 2 years ago
why would you do that?
billcavazos 2 years ago
I only allow the perfect parts to be on any of my firearms, i care for them as much as i do another person
xGothimox 2 years ago
You know you can remove the rust right?
And don't say you cant because I have cleaned up several rusted guns and they are great now.
Jrhoney 2 years ago
Can you take #0000 steel wool to a rusted gun and make it look okay? Yes. But that's not the RIGHT way to do it, and it will not look perfect. At the gunsmith school, they don't just take the rust out of the gun and blue it, they practically customise the finish of the gun. When a student is done with the gun, there are no machining marks, and no avoidable imperfections. The gun looks as good as it possibly can; it looks better than when it came from the factory.

ive already got info on this school but can any body tell me of a place or gun store that have gunsmiths that allow people to watch them at work

( such as colorado school of guns ) they don't teach class room just internet. this needs

How much money will a Gunsmith make after say 3 years of experience?
bwh3200 3 years ago
Not enough to make a living, no matter how many years you have been in service. There are few exceptions to this "rule" in my opinion.
Milithane 3 years ago
"Not enough to make a living". If that was the case then there wouldn't be anyone doing now would there? I graduated from PGS and I can expect to see 11$/hr starting at most places for entry level. People live on alot less than that. Check your facts before you run your mouth off.
jtwj2004 3 years ago
As a gunsmith (to be, I'm going to school) I look forward to an annual salary of 55,000 to 70,000... Al depending on how much i work.
lgf1978 3 years ago
I have worked 5 months from Renato Gamba, 7 years in Beretta, and 2 from a little Gunsmith, now I take 19000 euros/year. I have a good experience on sidebyside and over&under, anson and holland&holland. I make Daytona-Concorde (Renato Gamba), DT10,So5,So6 and So10 (in Beretta) and collector gun at the gunsmith. In Italy this job is not paid well
Ganjo84 3 years ago
$11/hr is not a living wage smart guy. you are literally considered the working poor at a wage like that. you can not make a mortgage payment, utility bills and feed yourself much less a family on 11/hr. you should try living in the real world before you run your mouth.
alderaforall 3 years ago 2
Thanks to all the cheap labor flooding the country, a whole lot of jobs no longer pay "living wages." Still, there's something to be said for the job satisfaction one can derive from this sort of work that just isn't found doing mindless, repetetive tasks.

Do you have ot on a gun store to be a gunsmith? Orare you always employed?.. i would like to be one.. but i dont want to be an employee in a small store... but i dont want to run it either.. HAha i dont know what i want
rainman1344 3 years ago
Well theres several places a gunsmith can get a job, both simple ones and extremely complex. 1 is to find a sports store, gun range, or gun store which all pertains to the repair, inspections, and modifications of gunsmithing. Or you can go to college and get your, mechanics, physics, electronics, and engineering degree and work for the government making heaps of cash or a big retailer such as Armatech or Remington making heaps of cash. Sooo simple to complex. You just got to start at simple.

Yes I have been gunsmithing for 36 years
I learned this hard trade from my Grandfather.
He worked in the Rock Island Arsenal.
From 1938 to 1945.Then he went to work.
For Brownells in Montezuma,Ia.
I would like to have about 10 to 20
Students to teach Gunsmithing.
I can teach from repairing to building.
Custom rifles and a lot more.
If anyone interested let me know. Dave
dumpasphalt 3 years ago
I will be graduating in June. It was well worth the time and money spent. You learn a niche trade in under 2 years that will last you a lifetime, not the 4 years of liberal indoctrination you get at "traditional" colleges. Great school.
