  • I think the new Max updates are amazing. I'm a maya user myself and have to say its a bit lame we're not getting viewport canvas, maybe in a few years when they decide to update that for Maya like they did with the new UI :P

  • I can't wait to see the upcoming changes ;)

And to the haters, stay calm and let's see what Autodesk 3ds max team gives to this baby. Can't wait to take it for a spin when it hits the "shelves"

  • hm...., should try...

  • look nice

  • You haven't seen all the plans for the ribbon. Just hold off for another little while and then feel free to bash us.

  • "Why not just integrate the new graphite tools into the editable poly menus?!"

In that screenshot I can count... 23 commands in the Edit Poly menus visible.

In the ribbon I count... 79 and that's excluding the soft selection controls.

Going further Each of the panel titles have fly downs so in one click you would have access to every single editable poly tool.

If you wanted to adjust smoothing you would have to scroll down on the command panel. It would be a lot of scrolling.

  • Well then, why not leave it the same way it was before being integrated into Max2010?

  • i hate to see all these bashing remarks. autodesk has to figure out if 90 percent of these comments are negative and 10 percent are positive...somethings wrong here... please stop making more buttons i can access all these things fine without these caddies. I'm still excited to see real improvements in MAX! :)

  • You have seen about 1/10th what we've got cooking. I'd hold off on making too many judgements so far.

  • i hope you're showing an old interface in the videos... like @pmgruhn said monitors are wider... get it ? ribbon + wide screen = small viewport... can you fell and artist in that viewport ?

  • lol, what happened to max in the last years. welcome to iconland...

  • And another feature... no CORE changes :(

The UI is even getting worse. Look how the spinners he uses are even hardly visible at the side of the screen. Hmm, that's not the direction I was thinking of when the told us about XBR in the webinar...

Still they are building features on top, but don't seem to clean their base.... :(

Well lets see, what comes next...

  • @hmpfgr123 you can barely see them, because the 3DS max is not maximized, so its going outside the record area...

  • "But you have more screen real estate to work with in modern days. Buy a new monitor."

Yes, yes we do. They got _wider_.

  • @colonelclaw AMIN

  • There's no doubt the new tools look amazing but the interface is just getting worse and worse. Look at how much usable screen space there is - it's absolutely horrible working inside that tiny letterbox view-port.

Please do NOT ship 2011 without moving the tools to the sides of the screen. You can have all the power in the world but without a decent interface it's completely pointless.

  • Agreed the new interface just holds experienced artists back. All the new users to max seem to love though, I guess thats why Autodesk added it.

  • The fat Graphite Toolbar at the top can be swapped to a vertical side bar with 1 click of a button in the tools or floated.

  • If that can be done, why do we still have old bitter people that complain about everything related to the bar. Are they still using 800x600? smh

  • That's great. Instead of taking up a bunch of space on the top, it can take up a bunch of space on the side. Half of those tools can be accessed from the command panel under editable poly. Why not just integrate the new graphite tools (Polyboost) into the editable poly menus?!

  • OR-LEARN to minimise the bar?

    Maybe U R right-new stuff? Develop a new UI? Buying a 19" LCD?No!

Max has been developed more (for an OLD 3d app) than anything else, especially considering that people slag it off for NOT having 100% brand new code, then say "Don't change stuff - I can't think beyond what I learned in my bedroom"

Its not perfect but its a freakin good WORKING tool for people who actually do 3d for a living!!

Max2009 to 2011 have made ALL THE DIFFERENCE in daily WORK processes

  • Nobody is saying "don't change stuff". Users are asking for things they feel could be improved to be changed, not for things that add no workflow benefits to be tacked on (viewcube, ribbon). I love Polyboost, but why was it not integrated into the editable poly command panel menu? Why create an additional menu in another location of the screen?

FYI, I have dual 19" monitors, w/ the command panel, render dialogs, and material editor one the right monitor.

  • What about, let's say, Max 6 to Max 2008? Have they made ALL THE DIFFERENCE in daily WORK processes?
