I know it only lasted one season, but I loved this show. It was sort of part WILD WILD WEST, part MAN FROM UNCLE, part DOC SAVAGE (it would take too long to explain). In any event, I really dug this series--and I WANTED that car like crazy!
Many thanks for posting this - never thought I'd see it again. Similar to Alias Smith & Jones with Pete Duel. I recommend "The Hell with Heroes" (1968) w/Rod Taylor and Duel. Similar feel and relationship dynamic he has with Cole. The film, albeit set in postwar Europe, might have influenced this show or at least the casting.
Taylor and Cole were the western version of "Starsky and Hutch"!
The show's theme song is great, adventurous and sweeping. The Movie "Powder keg" version is one step up terrific too. That Bearcat is indeed a beautiful car, the only drawback of it is there is no front windscreen... Taylor and Cole must have gotten alot of dust and bugs caught in their teeths doing the drive by shots!
This has some of the coolest theme music ever composed for a Western series--like Nanning1960, I hum or hear the music in my mind even after almost 40 years!
And guess what the network replaced this good series with? Want to hazard a guess? "Me and the Chimp"!!!! Wow what an epic fail decision that was.....
The series ran on CBS-TV from September to December of 1971 and produced 13 episodes, all in color. "Bearcats!" was the show the ran on Thursday nights opposite the powerhouse variety series "The Flip Wilson Show"(which was on NBC),and the western series "Alias Smith and Jones"(that was on ABC).
Did anybody know that this produced by Filmways Productions?
For a time the car from the show was in a museum here in chicago, but when the museum closed the cars were auctioned off, anyone know where it is now?
I loved this show and "Nichols" (which featured a 1913 Harley Davidson). The early twentyth century American west seemed like an exciting transition era to me!
Despite a second career in television, I'm afraid I'm a bit technologically behind the times when it comes to this type of stuff. I'll try to post a video of the car in action...
I loved the series when it was on CBS. I fell in love with Stutz Bearcats and old cars in general. I was disappointed to learn that Bearcats were so rare and expensive, so I started looking for one of the two Barris replicas used in the series and finally found it in 1998. It's been in my garage ever since. I drive it regularly. Dreams do come true!
My car was the first built so was used in all the episodes. Its now restored. The other was used only in about half. The main visual differences are the horn bulb location and hood stripes.
Mine has a stick shift in the center floorboard which you can see in episode 1 where the girl waylays the guys. Car 2, is now in Mich. & painted bright yellow.
The Barris "show car" was not used on TV, is in Minn. but has been stripped of most Barris touches to make it look more like a real Stutz.
Wow, I was really surprised to see this posted. I was a Freshman in college when this was on and I would always take a break from my studies in order to see it. It is a follow-on to programs like "The Rat Patrol" and "The Wild, Wild West". I haven't see it in 36 years and I remembered that it had a catchy theme song and hearing it again really took me back to "the good old days". Seeing that WWI-era biplane buzzing the Stutz Bearcat is a real thrill. I hope more episodes can be posted. Thanks!
Great Show that should have a longer run,but when it was cancelled in early 1972,CBS replaced it with one of the worst children's shows ever made-Me And The Chimp.
This was a man's Western, not the metrosexual trash like Trinity and Josey Wales which followed. Thank you for sharing!

Original movie Powderkeg was terrific I think I saw it in the theater about 3 times. Can't find it on the internet.

Don't bother with the VHS of the movie. The quality is poor. The DVD's though are very good.

Proof there's no intelligent life heading the networks, just sterile wimpy metrononsexuals too pansy for a cup.

I have the car used in this episode. I drive it most summer weekends and take itto some shows.
I bought it from a Philadelphia attorney in 1998. The other TV car is in Michigan.
Barris made a third for car shows, (but never used in the series) it's in Minnesota.

I had the "hots" for the Stutzbear. I always wanted this car! This brings back great memories!
Thank you!

If you want you can put an order in. I am having one built from original specs. It will look original, drive better and get better gas mileage.
redgreen303 2 years ago
Thanks for the offer, but no. I would have to hire a platoon of marines to protect this car!!

Anybody notice how the opening of this video with the tank blowing open a bank is similar to the opening of the film
"League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"?

The original T.V.M. pilot was called "Powderkeg".
