I have been composing and singing on and and off as if I myself was a Harmony Unit since 1970 by overdubbing onto tape and now onto computer. Now at 67 my voice wont let me do what I once used to(although I can hear it in my head, and write it into a score I am creating).
What I need is advice on which unit I should go for and most of all a "Seniors" or " Pensioners" Discount on my purchase so I can afford one of them!
@nicholasakuma Hiya, whilst you could physically do this we can't recommend it as some of the effects (adaptive tone, Harmony, Hardtune, Pitch Correction) would give undesired results with two singers using the unit at the same time.
Question, I'm very interested in purchasing this unit but my biggest worry is that as a piano player, can i manually control it one note or more at a time? For example, can i use it similar to a vocoder or the way a guitar player may solo with a talk box? From what I've seen, it only chooses it's voicings from the harmonies you play or the key that you have preselected. I would like to physically play a single note or more then sing it and have it produce the pitches played. Thanks!

@typpracoholika I see some other TC pedals next to the VL2 but I think only the VL2 is being recorded. All the effects, choir, autotune, reverb, (flange?) are all built in to the VL2 and can be activated individually or simultaneously.
@Summerbreeze1616 VoiceLive 2 uses new algorythms - whilst they may not be the exact effects straight from VoiceLive 1, you'll definitely find similar effects with a heap of new ones too.
hey guys I didnt get the part of programming obviously u can use it without playin an instrument but how does the device gets inversions and chords, do you have to program them?
@negrobazz Hiya, When using "natural play" mode with guitar or midi, the VoiceLive 2 is intelligently choosing it's harmonies based on the chordal information your instrument is feeding it. Thus, it's not giving you control over the inversions as such. But, some of the harmony options allow you to choose harmonies above or below etc.
@negrobazz However, if you set it to work in "midi notes mode" (to use this mode with guitar you'd need a midi converter), it will use the midi information and copy your exact chords and chord voicings - I've used this mode with some of the most complex jazz chord changes (both with guitar and keyboard) and it works like a dream.
i play in a power metal band, the vocals are clean and melodic but the guitars are distorted and quite technical, if i used one of my guitarists guitars to control the key will the voicelive 2 be able to recognise the key changes? even though its not just basic chords being strummed, lots of power chords and speed picking etc. tried to explain that as best as possible lol!
@AscensionBandUK Hiya, The issue you might face here is that power guitar chords often have no 3rd, so the pedal wouldn't determine the character as major or minor. The best thing to do in this case would be to program the key changes as steps and step through them during the song in “fixed key” mode as opposed to controlling the harmonies by guitar.
@AscensionBandUK ... This should work fine. When there are regular chords being used you could easily just have the harmonies controlled by guitar. As long as there is a third in the chord, the harmonies will know what to do.
Hi, I was going to purchase three different TC-Helicon pedals (The Voice Correct, Create XT,and the Harmony G-XT) But would I be better off getting the Voice Live 2? Is there any downside to purchasing the VoiceLive 2 (such as loss of features) over the individual pedals? Thanks.
@MusicMan20061210 HIya, Yes - if you send the harmony line that you have written to the VoiceLive 2 it will respond exactly as you have written it. For this you will need to be in midi notes mode.
@PeterKielJoergensen HIya, The key is dependant on either your guitar input or the fixed key you have set (you will need the key of the song if not playing guitar or using midi to make the harmonies work correctly).
You can then choose where you want the harmonies to be in relation to the lead voice i.e. above or below etc.
when are TC (or anyone) going to bring out a harmony pedal that doesn't need an instrument or needs to have the key preset or even a backing track, it just takes the key straight from your voice! now that would be a great product where all a singer has to do is sing into it and out come the harmonys you've selected . I personally thought at least one company would have had the foresight to come up with this by now!
when you sing just one note with no key selected there are several different harmonies in several different keys .. there are only 12 notes so by default every note is in a multitude of chords.. a harmony effect that could build the right chords off one sung tone would be a very hard innovation that would rely on telepathy..
Well the voice live 2 can determin what type of voice you have and adjust the sound automaticly I think that they could come up with a processor that can determin the general key you are singing in, telepathy wouldn't come into it just tech and a little imagenation ......... you never know one day!
Unfortunately what you're asking a machine to do is impossible, and I can explain why:
Imagine you are singing solo with your mic running through one of these harmony processors. You haven't manually programmed the harmoniser and you don't have an instrument providing chordal information, just your solo voice into the processor. You sing a C note. What harmonies is the processor supposed to add? There are dozens and dozens of chords that have the note C in them, so which one does it pick?
Even if the machine automatically decided that you're singing in the key of C, there are still 3 simple major or minor chords in the key of C that it could choose from (C, F, Am) not to mention all of the 7th chords (Dm7, FMaj7), diminished chords (dim, dim7, half dim7), added note chords and altered chords (Gsus4, G11, FMaj9, C6, Cadd9, C7#9 etc).
With a single voice, you only have monody, not harmony. You can add so many notes to a single melodic line that a machine needs a bit more info.
With VoiceLive 2 you can either set the harmonies by Key/ Scale or you can control them with guitar / Keyboard (or any MIDI source) aswell as having the ability to use audio input. You can also set a scale or key with the Harmony-G.
Laura was demonstrating a few TC Helicon pedals this day as it was at the Frankfurt music trade show in Germany. She was only using the VoiceLive 2 in this particular video :).
Holy crap that sounds AMAZING!!! I just got the Harmony G as a solo act but this machine takes it to a whole other level. Can't believe how REAL the choir setting sounds. WOW!
Are you necessary to connect his/ pedal Voice Live 2 in another pedal of the Tc helicon so that he automatically identifies the musical chords and do order the sign for the Voice live for this to do the harmonization of voices correctly? thank you.
I've got the pedal and we've only used it a few times. I went into practice today and there is a distortion on the vocals. I am using no effects, and checked the cables and mic to make sure they are not the problem. Still a harshness on the vocals. Any ideas?
My first thought would be to check the pre-amp gain isn't too high (you can manually adjust this in the I/O tab of the "System" menu or use the automatic mic gain feature). If this fails to fix the problem, I'd suggest contacting support via our website.
I did check the gains and made sure they have correct levels. The problem is we are a rock band. I think this works good for smooth vocals, but when you real dig in, it clips and kinda freaks out, hence no examples of rock singers using these effects.
I am quite sure the distortion isn't due to "digging in" as I have seen quite a few people use this unit in heavier styles etc. How did you go with support? We're working on getting some heavier styled examples for everyone who wants them :).
sounds awesome! 1 question do you need to use an instrument plugged in or can a vocalist use the unit just by setting the key? all the demos I have seen use an acoustic apart from this one. Thanks. Laura is a matural...
Secondly however, the VoiceLive 2 is the first unit of it's type that is capable of creating harmonies to any audio input signal (mic/mp3/backing track/band mix) via the aux in jack. This is a major feature and really worth checking out. Give me a shout anytime if you have more questions!
I bought one but it creates a hell of a lot of noise when I plug it into my VOx DA 5 amp guitar and Mic input I tried isolating everything and its definately coming from the Harmony G so how can I avoid this?
Hi guys - my voicelive2 (it's now in the uk) arrived yesterday. For a not-very-gifted-amateur-with-a-day-job, it isn't cheap - so beware! And it has a daunting array of features that a beginner like me might find overwhelming. Except for the fact that is SO MUCH FUN!!! And it actually makes me sound GOOD (usually the neighbours complain that I am strangling a cat). I've only been playing with the presets so far, no discernable delay, even with the choir.
Ah, it's great to hear some feedback, thankyou. Please feel free to contact me anytime if you need a hand with figuring out how to do different things with it :). What are you using to trigger the harmonies? Do you have any favourite presets so far?
I own several procucts of TC helicon and switch to VL2 (2 days ago). 1st, it seems to me that the harmonies generated are usually less audible than the ones with voicetone harmony G ?? problem of setting ??
In addition, I tried to mimic the settings of Laura but nothing appears satisfactory. Would it be feasible to obtain by mail or on the blog, or somewhere the settings in practice. This will not only please many of us but also will help to understand how VL2 works in true situation
We've heard from a few customers about the difference in harmony sounds from VoiceLive 2 and Harmony G. Part of the issue is presets - there are loads of parameters for crafting harmony sounds. Next week we are releasing a bank of new presets that are authored the same as Harmony G to help give familiarity to customers. The benefit is that you'll get the improved shifters.
Also, I'd have a play around with the gain and reverb on the harmonies. You may find that the reverb on the harmonies is making them sound more distant in the mix. I'll also see if I can get a hold of the exact settings that Laura used in this video.
I bring in a lower voice first, then build from there adding the bass voice last. I also worked with the panning of each voice to make it sound even bigger.
Is it just that you want to have 1 female voice singing with you in harmony, or are you wanting to change the formant of your voice so that it sounds like a female voice?
With VoiceLive 2 you can use the hard tune effect under FX in the edit menu. You can choose for this to be corrected to a specific scale in the menu. Hope this helps a bit!
Yes, the 8 voices and choir feature are unique to Voice Live 2! The Harmony G features up to 2 harmony voices at any one time and whilst it is a fantastic unit, the Voice Live 2 features a totally different technology for it's harmony generation (Called "Natural Play") which has made the harmonies sound even more realistic again. Hope that answers your question? If not, give me a yell anytime! Joey :)
The delay is definitely due to a late pressing of the button in this case. The way Laura did this demonstrates really well the weight and atmosphere that is added to your vocal by bringing in the new choir effect also with an additional harmony.
Glad you like it!
Feel free to contact us anytime if you need more info.
I wonder is the delay just her own timing on hittng the switch? The vocals are in time the first time - perhaps she's just late with her foot the second time
Yes, that could be it. I really hope so! (and if that's the answer I want one!) She sounds pretty damn fine on her own, but when the backing choir kicks in...
Nah, I'd like my backing vocalists (if I ever had any) to come in 'on cue' - but maybe that delay is programmed in. I don't seem to notice it on the harmonies, only on the choir ... but anyway, this piece of kit seems well worth trying! I must seek one out ...

@daminnick21 In "MIDI Notes" mode it does exactly that - the harmony voices play the exact pitches coming in from the keyboard.

Turn all of the hamony voices to Off
Create 5 steps, adding one harmony voice with each step until you have the full 4/8 part choir. .

I bring in a lower voice first, then build from there adding the bass voice last. I also worked with the panning of each voice to make it sound even bigger.
The effects were all coming from preset 14 as is.

i am trying to edit a preset to have female vocals so that i can sing a duet. i havent figured out how to do that . can u pl hep?

Hi,
Is it just that you want to have 1 female voice singing with you in harmony, or are you wanting to change the formant of your voice so that it sounds like a female voice?

Hiya,
With VoiceLive 2 you can use the hard tune effect under FX in the edit menu. You can choose for this to be corrected to a specific scale in the menu. Hope this helps a bit!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
It sounds pretty phony and is not passe, but that effect is done with a Antares unit, the MF site has em for 399.

That Huge "Choir algorithm" (8 voices?)
is an exclusive feature of the Live2 or is present in other product ?
maybe lowered targeted ones (as Harmony-g for example)?
alexlotta 2 years ago

This sounds really impressive BUT didn't I hear a slight delay before the effects kicked in?
I will have to check this out myself first: is there a place in London where I can play with one of these?
CandidoBandido 2 years ago
Could be but isn't that slight delay what usually makes it sound "real"?
marielina 2 years ago
Nah, I'd like my backing vocalists (if I ever had any) to come in 'on cue' - but maybe that delay is programmed in. I don't seem to notice it on the harmonies, only on the choir ... but anyway, this piece of kit seems well worth trying! I must seek one out ...

maybe that slight delay was caused because Laura was delayed herself on pressing the button. I think that is the reason.
