The word tea not was popular for there times :) because it was this Portuguese queen to introduce this habit in England, the five hour tea. I`m shore that 95% British don`t know.
Tea is the agricultural product of the leaves, leaf buds, and internodes of various cultivars and sub-varieties of the Camellia sinensis plant, processed and cured using various methods.
"Tea" also refers to the aromatic beverage prepared from the cured leaves by combination with hot or boiling water, and is the common name for the Camellia sinensis plant itself. After water, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. It has a cooling, slightly bitter, astringent flavour which many enjoy.
The term herbal tea usually refers to infusions of fruit or herbs containing no actual tea, such as rosehip tea or chamomile tea. Alternative terms for this are tisane or herbal infusion, both bearing an implied contrast with tea.
I feel so sorry for her. Idk what's worse being rutted like an animal like that, no feelings involved. or being left alone as yr husband leaves the marriage bed to go to his mistress
I'm so glad I like Diana Rigg from past dramatic enterprises because if this role was my first encounter with her, I would have a hard time coming 'round to liking her. She is formidable, that's for sure.
Poor Catherine... I speak portuguese (im brazilian) and so I understood how pious she was I feel bad about how she was bullied by Charles's mistresses just for not being a whore like they are.
Henrietta Maria is a fucking bitch. A regular Lady Macbeth. She badly influenced Charles I, she is trying manipulate Charles II, and she won't even go see her dying son, Henry.
Poor Catherine of Portugal! She came straight away off a nuns monastery just to become queen consort of England! She had no clue of whatsoever, although she spoke lots of languages, but not English! In the course of times, however, she became a clever and shrewd political woman, demanding her husband's loyalty and that of her new protestant fellow countrymen! She even adopted that dry biting humour of the English towards her women rivals!
@Guitcad1 ..a bat! That's a historical quote! Hair fashion in Portugal was completely different from english at the time! To Brits, that hairstyle of hers looked like a flying bat with open wings! When Charles first saw her, arriving with all that dowry & enormous amounts of money saving him from getting broke, he almost had a stroke. "They brought me a bat to marry" he terrified & spontaniously exclaimed!
We in Portugal sometimes call Catherine by Catarina Morcego, Catherine, the bat. ;-)
Nevertheless I do congratulate Shirley Henderson! Portuguese is a very hard language to learn and it is usually hard for English speakers to pronounciate the words correctly!
My God! As a portuguese woman I think they should have at least picked a portuguese actress for the role of Catherine! Would have worked much better! I can hardly understand what she is saying!
@anatinoni I think she was a very good casting choice, she plays the role very well. Catherine grew on the English people and nowadays she's remembered very fondly as one of the better consorts, I think she got her own back in the end
I reckon they couldn't and wouldn't take a Portuguese actress! First, they don't know there are any Portuguese actresses at all! Then, it might have been also a major problem a foreign actress working in an English production, because of union rules... But I agree in both topics: yes, a Portuguese girl would have matched much better, even concerning accent authenticity in English! It would be 100%! And yes, inspite difficulties, Shirley managed it very well! Congratulations, Shirley
Did the producers think so little of the viewing audience that they felt they had to make Catherine look so ridiculous with that headdress? Did they think that was the only way people would realize that this was supposed to be a silly, tragic, pathetic character?
@Guitcad1 Headdresses like that were actually popular about a decade earlier in Portugal and Spain. (1650s going by wiki images). So there is a reason for putting it on there.
@Guitcad1 Well, if the Dirk Stoop portrait of her is true to nature, she did have a rather similar hairstyle in the early days. This is only little exaggerated.
Horrible woman! apparently Catherine of Braganza was so upset at the idea of her being principle lady in waiting she had a nosebleed. Not suprising really
Why the fuck does Catherine speak with a Brazilian accent? And all of her Portuguese courtiers?... For fuck sake, they should have brought it at least correctly.
@Songsmirth Well, as you can see, she is praying: "I plea for your help oh Lord, so I can fulfill my "duty" - Jesus, Joseph and Mary, I ask your help to conceive a son, in order to make my husband happy". If I understood well, that's what she says...
When Charles says he will consumate the marriage later, she says: "My mother taught me the duties to my husband. If you are patient, I will certainly learn how to satisfy you." (...) "Have I done something wrong? Am I not beautiful enough for you?"
@Songsmirth It's really interesting, and there's an obvious explanation to the manners of behaviour and dressing, of the Portuguese Court. The dressing is explained by the fact that Portugal had recently got out of the Iberian Union (personal union of crowns under the Spanish Habsburgs). Portuguese fashion was obviously influenced by the Spanish... which remained for some time after the breakaway with the union (even in noble/ royal classes).
@Songsmirth About behaviour... I've "heard" some worst things. When I went to the Mafra National Palace, the stories were horrendous. For example, the King lived in one tower with his private court, and the Queen in the opposite tower with her court. The King would then cross the whole palace with his court in order to have... sexual relationships with his wife. But before they had to pray, a priest would spread incense in the room, and bless the royal couple for the... effort.
@paintw1zard1377 At the beginning? Well... she asks for tea. If you're for the prayer - it's basically something like this: "I ask of you, Jesus, Joseph and Mary, help me completing my duty, and bearing a son to please my husband." After Charles calms her (basically telling her they won't have sex), I only caught some parts "Be patient to me, as I am certain you've been to others"; "Have I done something wrong? I'm not beautiful? Please tell me. (she cries)".
@paintw1zard1377 Anyways, considering the transformations of Portuguese language throughout the centuries - her Portuguese, as well as the Portuguese of her companions is terrible. Not even near of what ancient Portuguese would sound like. It sounds a lot more like Brazilian Portuguese. It's terrible!
God, the parallels between Barbara Villiers and Queen Henrietta--I'd never noticed it before, but they're both borderline personalities. No wonder the King fell so hard for his mistress; she was just as difficult as his mother.
great acting by dame Diana, but I was wondering , was Queen Henrietta such a fire-brand as portrayed in this, or was there a bit of dramatic license taken by the writer and director in that scene?
From what I've read (incl. the book this show was based upon) Queen Henrietta was not a firebrand as such--but could be conniving, cruel, hysterical, demanding, etc.. She acted more fearfully in her early life, but later in life was more inflexible and bitter. (I'd also read she was supposed to be stupid, but that's one thing Diana Rigg would be incapable of playing, imo.) So, I think this is a good portrayal--but I could be wrong; it's been a while since I read on this subject.

Principles are made for people, and are not to be upheld at people's expense.
Too many evil people have pretended to be principled, and have misused the power they have gained by fraud and deceit.
Good people use principles to make everything better, without regard for their own comfort. These are real heroes- great because they are good.
