The "edge lit" LED LCDs look like shit to me!!! Look at the one at 1:52, the letterbox is clearly a dark blue even in that relatively well lit area!! My standard LCD panel performs better than that...

@lblbates No, the technology has been has been there. Just no one wanted to bother with it since it would so expensive to make. No one else is going to make a 3 inch glasses free screen. The other companies needed bigger screens. Glasses free was shown at CES 2010 actually. That is before the 3DS was announced.
