I like to play A major using the 2nd 3rd and 4th fingers. It makes it easy to change to A minor and also the A shape can be barred. But each to his own.

if you're fingers hurt its normal. over time you'll get calluses and you're skin on you're finger tips with be all........gross looking. but it wont hurt anymore :)

This way is a very bad way to play the "A" chord!!! By far the best way to play this chord is to bar the three notes all with your first finder. It is so much easier.The names of the notes you have to push down on are " e -a -and d flat - just use one finfer to do it with- your first finger!!!!!!! I cant belive he didnt even talk about doing it my way.

Thanks for the video!!! I've just started learning the guitar, on my own with youtube and a book, and am starting to panic that I'm not getting the proper sounds of the chords because my fingertips are quite pudgy and thick, almost the width of 2 notes in the neck of the guitar - - - is this normal at the start - - - or are those with thicker fingertips at a disadvantage here? They are also soft and rounded!!! Fattier than your average fingertips... will I be able to learn this instrument?

Try to not use your nails. Strings can dent and break nails. Plus, they may interfere with other strings. The idea is to get the fret pressed down with your finger without touching another string.

@SPYDOC1 No if you're a beginner it's perfectly normal, after a while of playing your finger tips will form a sort of callous type of thing, and it will be fine :)

@SPYDOC1 Nah the strings always bite in at first. You will eventually form callouses, if you keep at it long enough. I have hench ones on my fingers from drumming but I'm just starting guitar, one of my guitarist friends can put the ends of his fingers on a hot stove and it doesn't hurt!
