My vet volunteered for the Police Dept, helping to nurse rescued fighting dogs back to health. They had to place the dogs empty rooms, otherwise the dogs would tear-up whatever was in the room. This was not because the dogs were crazy or rabid, but because they were taught that they would not get anything to eat until they tore something to pieces. The dogs were all malnourished.

Dogs that are not interested in fighting, are often killed (in order to keep them out of the gene pool). The "gameness" gene is recessive and difficult to maintain, as it is not a good survival skill. In other words, if animals in the wild were "game," they wouldn't live long.

@quanfa88 Whether or not ribs are showing is not a gauge to determine whether or not a dog is under nourished. A far more accurate gauge is the ratio of neck diameter to waist diameter. A conditioned dog's neck will be nearly the same diameter as his waste. Their are other factors to consider, but this a really good at a glance rule of thumb.

Dogs that quit are killed, or allowed to die from hypo-volemic shock (the most common killer of fighting dogs).

These dogs are not meant to be fought. Yes, they will fight, but they do it out of a love and loyalty to their owner that runs deeper than logic. BSL is a knee-jerk reaction to bite cases and maulings, not to some backwoods APBTs like the ones shown. The ones on the tow chains in the back 40 aren't causing the issue of BSL, it's the poorly bred pit bulls in suburban and urban areas, sold as ego extensions or adopted by the "They'll be okay if I luv 'em and hug 'em" types that ignore bad apples in the breed. I've owned ADBA UKC dogs since the late 80s, when ppl thought they were Boxers, sad state the breed's in now from popularity.
