European automotive laws require soft bumpers and hoods, for eventual hits on pedestrians, it was engenired in europe it have to follow the rules. This kind of test goes against the hole purpose. It´s not a matters of saving insurance money but safety for everybody.
The cars are designed to crumple so the impact is absorbed and not transfered to the cabin. It seems as if not many people have taken a basic physics class. So what if there are some money savings in the event of a 5mph crash? In the event of a 50mph crash, you wont be dead, where as using chrome bumpers and having a stiff structured car, you will be pummeled and rocked back and forth, break your neck and bleed to death. I'm good with the latter.
It looked like the rear sidepanel was dented as well, though most likely it can be made back to it's normal state. That taken into account and the fact that internal parts of the body always will be affected as well, 1800 dollars in total for repairs doesn't seem that bad.
@jagl19 Yeah, no one cares that a 5mph collision costs over $1,200.00 to repair, when the same collision on an early 80s car would cost around a hundred.... duh.
How'd the bumper crack? I do notice that some might think that it only dented but look it cracked too! Pause video at 0:21 when the Volkswagen taps the yellow thing! The rear left pannel cracks/ or gets a space!
@mytexasmilk Look at :27 and at :28,you can clearly see that the bumper is made out of a few pieces and that due to the crash they just got separated,it didn't crack.
Oh, that's what happened. But that's rediculous for it to just pop apart like that. Don't even mention the video with the Passat. $5,000 to fix a dented hood, smushed grille, and popped out headlamp.
modern 'bumpers' and cars are designed to absorb the energy from a impact, thats why they deform like this volkswagen jetta's one did... if they dont do this its the the occupants of the car or the obstacle or person that the car hits that is what absorbs the impact.. these slow speed test crashes are simply to illustrate how modern cars achieve this as oppose to how say the 1981 ford escort didn't
@idrinorbarsaku - Agreed. That yellow thing looks the same as it did in the 1980's crash test when cars had bumpers. They need to update it to resemble the "bumpers" cars currently have. I think this is why the older (80's) cars have significantly less damage. Even late 80's model cars went away with the old school steel (or similar) bumpers.
The thing here is that minor collisions at low speeds are VERY common; they literally happen every day.
And, considering that these tests are being conducted by the **INSURANCE** Institute of Highway Safety, this is a pertinent test.
This means that a low speed collision that results in damage that can be up to 1/4 of the car's MSRP is VERY expensive to an auto insurance company. This translates into higher insurance costs to the owner, especially if you have full coverage.
The IIHS and, in effect, the auto insurance industry, has a vested interest in vehicles that sustain as minimal damage as possible in minor collisions while protecting occupants as best as possible in major crashes because this means lower claim costs in vehicle repairs/replacement and medical care.
but what have you to pay in hunday sonata? xD don't get me wrong i don't say hunday sonata is bad it's good but nothing happened it bounced off what do you have to pay here xD?
It is called an Elastic Collision... If you didn't have it, you'd get a serious change of acceleration (otherwise known as a jerk) that'd seriously hurt you. Cars take the blow nowadays so that the person doesn't have to get hurt.
i under stand how it help but maybe the should implement some more steel cause i dont wanna pay 1800 for backing into a shopping cart if i hit it with my old found on road dead who would give a fuck well the cart would prolly roll into a jetta and cause 1800 in dammage but still
Well it's not an elastic collision because the kinetic energy is hardly at all retained, but I understand what you meant in that elasticism plays a role in spreading out force over a longer period of time.
what is wrong with cars these days its like its playdoh because the car hit and the bumper is almost going back to normal look at the bumper very close and see that that part is coming back to normal and your gonna think how does it come back if its plastic
fuck crumple zones the car needs to detect the impact and eject your ass out lol it would work till you hit the ground and get ran over but atleast you didnt die in the car
How many people would have been hurt in a 5 MPH accident? Why does a plastic headlight or taillight for a new car cost $500? what does that have to do with the safety of the occupants?
@rustydog0329 this is just a test, there's no need to crash another car at full speed, euro ncap already does that. just picture, 2 cars, 60mph, head to head, both them don't get smashed, the ocupants would die with the impact, projected thru the window or kill by their own seatbelts. afterall, the car is just a material thing, huge for me, but not bigger than a persons' life, it needs to absorve the impact.
@rustydog0329 To absorb the forces of impact. Sure, you could make them out of steel and laugh at fender-benders, but in a full-scale collision that hard piece would not give well and instead be forced backward through the car, causing even more damage and potentially endangering the occupants. Not to mention that even a high-strength steel would get dented at anything above more than ~8mph, and then it costs even more to replace than a normal bumper.
@rustydog0329 Oh, and if you watch some of the other tests carefully you can see that the yellow thing does actually crumple as well. It is made of a sheet metal shell mounted against a steel frame behind it: much like a regular bumper. They probably have to replace it after every test, too.
@rustydog0329 wow...you must have no idea how cars are made and how they react to crashes? read about that first then you will realize why they put styrofoam.
plastic and styrofoam crush on impact to absorb the shock so you dont feel it. if it was steel the impact force will straight up travel through out the car and youd be the one absorbing the shock, not the car.
@rustydog0329 because theres no give with the yellow stuff (dont know what it is either lol) and would make crashes alot worse for injuries and deaths and shit
I don't think you should judge a manufacturer by how much it is to repair body work, because safety should always be number one over price and the fact that people don't normally go looking to get into accidents. So this repair cost shouldn't be such a big factor in in creating an opinion about Volkswagen. I am just saying.
New cars have bumpers...Most imported cars have somthing called 5mph bumper covers and then a steel or hard plastic beam or a steel beam and a foam peice/plastic beam and foam peice...in fact plastic bumpers have lower reapair costs and damage then steel bumpers.
This shows exactly how cheap they make new cars...That aint no damn bumper, its a freaking piece of plastic. 1, 800 just for a 5mph bumper hit...better off buying something with a metal bumper...or rubber...

People need to stop buying into the notion of "superior German engineering". It's a fallacy. It's the only thing that keeps VW going. VWs aren't any longer lasting or more reliable than American cars in the long run. Big problems are common. The Polo was rated one of the worst cars sold in Europe. Save yourself a few thousand and go buy a Hyundai or Kia. They're better than the American brands now and offer better value than the Japanese.
audi made a good job there, and what does have a thousand dollar to do with safety? Its just for women that cant drive and need to pay those bills monthly...
What teh fuck happened VW? German cars are supposed to succeed in crash tests, leave those embarrassing results to Chinese cars. In terms of safety Sweden is a powerhouse!
I'm entirely right, Chinese cars had horrible results in crash tests (watch FAW), second, Swedish cars are proved to be the best cars in terms of safety, you can check it anywhere you want, Volvo & SAAB. I checked your profile and you're the kind of shitless people who are always fucking around looking for a conflict, return to play your guitar, you don't belong to the automobile world. I don't know a 100% about cars but certainly I know more than you.
i know the chinese cars have horrible crash tests ive seen the same videos of BYD and Changfeng that you have. You are saying that the jetta did so bad in this test. the jetta actually did great.I was watching some other bumper tests and some of the cars had damage costs way into the 4k mark. The damage for the jetta was under 2k. I'd say it fared much better.
and mabey you need to relook into those chinese test because the jobs they did were GOD awful. Not even a comparison to the MKV here. And you used the word "teh", which is an instant marker for ignorance. And you implied that sweden and germany were the same country (so either you are an idiot, or you have problems formulating a basic thought.) And you are obviously looking for a flame war because you posted things about my page on here so people will jump in and help you.
doesnt help that the quarter panel creased, its a lot of work cutting it off then welding another inplace. labour would of been about 60% of the charge... DO IT YOURSELF!
You do not have to cut off the old one and weld a new one back on, I have the same car and it had 1/4 panel damage, and you use a special electrifying tool to get the dent out
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Do they make that car from china? Such a rip off. i would rather buy Hyundai sonata. check out the bumper test of HYUNDAI SONATA. can't believe korean car bet european car.
but the occupants will absorb the full crash impact energy, modern cars are design to absorb most of the impact energy with flexible materials, the tradeoff is a very high damage for the car but more safety for the people inside the vehicle.
remember that not only young healhty people drive.
6mph or 3 mph crash can be very dangerous for an pregnant woman, senior citizen with a phisical condition or a newborn.
I love my jetta. I have no problems except I had to take it in because the people at my car wash broke the clips on the floor mats off, But nothing that was Volkswagen's fault.
i have a 2006 jetta which i love.. goes hard beats most 6 cylinder cars out there and i have a 2.0tdi but recently been in an accident and i have neva felt soo safe in a car...it definantly a great car to drive and to own..i miss it!! the only real problem which i started to see was that on cold starts when rollin into neutral (automatic transmission) u can feel a thump but once its warm its all good...soo yeh enjoy
I have a 2006 jetta and was rear ended there was substantial damage to the bumper/plastic but the damage was contained to the actual bumper itself none of the metal deformed and the total cost was $893 all they had to do was sand/repaint/realign the bumper and its right as rain...
the dent stayed in the bumper..

and mabey you need to relook into those chinese test because the jobs they did were GOD awful. Not even a comparison to the MKV here. And you used the word "teh", which is an instant marker for ignorance. And you implied that sweden and germany were the same country (so either you are an idiot, or you have problems formulating a basic thought.) And you are obviously looking for a flame war because you posted things about my page on here so people will jump in and help you.

and EXCUSE me, dont go back to naruto. Go back to filming yourself playing doom or world of warcraft or whatever shit is on your page.

the crumple zone is necessary to keep people from smashing their face during minor disturbances in the cabin such as this one.

Also, a rigid chassis/body means the passenger takes more of the impact.

even the old beetle can do better!Holy smokes!

i doubt it was that expencive.
if it was true, the crash also must have damaged the boot too
hammy100000 2 years ago
lol at first i thought that it was a high speed video of the car moving fast, i was sadly mistaken
sgtclam 2 years ago
The crumple zones are intended to save lives. Who cares about the car they can be replaced. Overall, try not to crash

doesnt help that the quarter panel creased, its a lot of work cutting it off then welding another inplace. labour would of been about 60% of the charge... DO IT YOURSELF!
thepopesmokesdope2k6 3 years ago
You do not have to cut off the old one and weld a new one back on, I have the same car and it had 1/4 panel damage, and you use a special electrifying tool to get the dent out

Do they make that car from china? Such a rip off. i would rather buy Hyundai sonata. check out the bumper test of HYUNDAI SONATA. can't believe korean car bet european car.

i bet if it was a 60s car when they were steel the car would go right thru tht wall without a scratch

problaby
but the occupants will absorb the full crash impact energy, modern cars are design to absorb most of the impact energy with flexible materials, the tradeoff is a very high damage for the car but more safety for the people inside the vehicle.
remember that not only young healhty people drive.
6mph or 3 mph crash can be very dangerous for an pregnant woman, senior citizen with a phisical condition or a newborn.

What people fail to realise is that the outside of cars are designed to self destruct in order to protect the occupants inside.

you folks with jettas are there any problems you've had with it? i mean how's the reliability on this car?
lowincash 3 years ago
I love my jetta. I have no problems except I had to take it in because the people at my car wash broke the clips on the floor mats off, But nothing that was Volkswagen's fault.

i have a 2006 jetta which i love.. goes hard beats most 6 cylinder cars out there and i have a 2.0tdi but recently been in an accident and i have neva felt soo safe in a car...it definantly a great car to drive and to own..i miss it!! the only real problem which i started to see was that on cold starts when rollin into neutral (automatic transmission) u can feel a thump but once its warm its all good...soo yeh enjoy
nebuthet 3 years ago 2
I have a 2006 jetta and was rear ended there was substantial damage to the bumper/plastic but the damage was contained to the actual bumper itself none of the metal deformed and the total cost was $893 all they had to do was sand/repaint/realign the bumper and its right as rain...
