I noticed they haven't played Parabola in a very long time. I wonder if Maynard can even sing it anymore. I know he's had trouble with it at least on one occasion in the past.
@atomiicx he said in an interview that he wondered why he made songs he barely could sing live, wich probably is the reason why they dont play these kind of songs live anymore. Like when they played The Pot in the 2010 tour they had to drop the guitars so he could be able to sing it without any problems.
@BfuckinC dude stfu, the reason that they have the videos is so that you don't focus on them to much. Plus a lot of people like to see that stuff live
Everytime I hear these guys in action it puzzles my mind, like deep dark mysteries that have finally been solved!? Rejoice, this universe is not as empty and shallow as you might think!
people need to shut the fuck up during parabol. If i was at that concert i would feel cheated by the crowd. Im not talking about the singing along, i mean the WOOOOs that continually arise

@usernam4444 I was pretty happy with their choice of playing the patient but for sure parabol/a and pushit would have been totally amazing but I guess the slower songs don't get the crowd as amped, those bunch of a hole tool fans!
Indeed the Led Zeppelin of present day rock . What tone , what crazy rhythm , what bass playing , what drum patterns and Oh my GAWD , WOW . What a gifted voice :D
@itreanor i kinda agree, but i think they more of a modern day pink floyd! but tool & zep r my fave all time bands so i aint knockin the idea :) it takes a true fan to say i enjoyed tool's no quarter cover over zep's org. peace luv musik*
I can't help but feel as though Tool has always been and always will be. The music feels so ancient,as if they've stumbled upon some sort of incredible concentration of the essence that has been around for eternity. It's like a preacher that feels the spirit,he gives himself to it,and lets it guide him.
I am not very familiar with Radiohead, I can only think of the "Ruuunn awaaayy!" song that was popular, but can they really compare with tool? Anyone who fell in love with metal is moved by it and cannot be moved by other music in the same way. Tool is not metal, but I think Tool can tap into that and then go alot further; people feel enlightened just listening to it. Radiohead is a little on the soft side, (emo?) and doesn't seem like it can tap into that "emotional aggression"
Radiohead smashed MIley Cyrus (good thing, look it up!!) and did something great for In Rainbows- made the price of which it's sold YOUR choice (even if it's $0.00!)
Tool should do something like this. Flip off Beiber and then release their next album with a very unique catch.
Also, Tool is very popular. They just don't appear so because they refuse to put their songs on iTunes, whereas Radiohead does. That's why RH appears more mainstream, even though they're of the same.
@RussianCivilian After listening to Tool over 2000 times, believe me, they're both so damn talented even though Radiohead may appear as more "popular".
@RussianCivilian No, I sort of agree. Radiohead makes time to make albums, and are miles, lightyears even ahead of everyone else making that trash known as "pop".
Radiohead's definitely good and people have finally caught on (but not enough to kill Justin Beiber, unfortnately)
Now if we can only get people to catch onto Tool instead of ... whatever """""rock""""" they're playing on the radio.
@TourettesSomething i'll agree pop sucks. In 5 years, nobody is going to remember Miley Cyrus for being anything but a Jailbait Skank. Tool, on the other hand, will be alive and thriving MANY years from now, just as they have been for years already. In the end, what is truly good will still be alive, because a shallow entity built upon itself (Jonas Brothers, Beiber, ect) will topple with the dust of time.
@squiresuzuki Actually, Tool is ahead of RH for one reason- RH and Tool are about as well known. Tool did it by selling physical albums alone (unheard of these days) whereas RH focused on both physical albums AND digital downloads.
If Tool changed direction and put themselves on iTunes, they'd outsell Radiohead, even though they are both so awesome, people have to shield their eyes just to comprehend them and their awesomeness.
@TourettesSomething I disagree, look at the front page of the iTunes store. Pop. then in the so called "Rock" section, they have 1. all american rejects 2. Nickleback 3. Journey, 4. John Mayer... Shit like that. iTunes appeals to the masses...which even Radiohead does not. Suprisingly. And you say "oh, but people hear about Tool and then look them up on iTunes"...well, I wouldn't want to be a co-fan with anyone who wouldn't want to get off their lazy asses and get the sweet recording package!
I dont know... I think its important to keep grounded when listening to tool, having a family, kids, sticking to routinely life, and leaving the big questions to your free time.
hi, i coulndnt help looking at your comment, actually i feel like that odd world really exists somewhere in my mind or i dunno somewhere else, something hard to describe, specially when i smoke pot. ohh man it's so out of this world i cant even describe it.
I wish I could take "woooers" and screamers at concerts, bag em up ,and sink em to the bottom of the ocean. Its like theyre children that cant stand to go long without having to make a loud noise.
It's like if the music isn't upbeat then their attention spans run out and they have to remind themselves that they are there; they have to do this, else they will enter a seizure. I'm with ya...I'd definately love to press a mute button on their face...hard.
they don't understand that Tool goes deeper than music. A lot deeper. If they understood, they would be silent, never to speak again for the awe of their discovery.
@freshtendrills And the ones that sing along with it. If everybody could just shut the fuck up and appreciate the music, they would all have a better experience.
@Slaytounge I judge them. I judge them to be selfish pricks who dont give a shit that some people go to watch Tool to listen to their delicate and emotional music, not to listen to some drunk wanker screaming and whooing at any opportunity.
A parable (parabol/parabola) in religious terms, is an exemple spoken from the disciples of Jesus to translate holy words into an image.
I think that the band just want to make a parable about the fact that life is beautiful and one's mind is eternal whereas his body's mortal. It's a very original way to express feelings about life itself.
It is more about the meaning. Thinking about what a parabola is. It is eternal. You may not always be ascending, you might also have to descend. But the flow is constant on one axis and yet it is repetitive on another. Just like our lives. We are constantly going forward, yet things keep repeating. If you really think about the circle of life, it would better be represented by a parabola.
tool is my religion. i can never find the words to show what they mean to me. what they've added to my life, and what they've taken away. tool. forever. my life, is theirs.
Parabol is so tranquil and hypnotic then parabola just makes you want to kill people :) fucking insane only tool can do something like that . Little surprise why LAteralus got like triple platinum.
Much agreed, it was like a spiritual experience, I ended up going by myself cuz the girl I was with sold her ticket like a tard, wasn't gonna miss them for the world. Best band ever
patience..i like that.though i have really no patience in life at all. well very little indeed. Tool is about patience, yes. but its also about experiencing them, and then in time realizing that its not really music that your listening to.its art. its therapy.its trippin while you are sober.its fruit for the mind.its a breath of fresh air considering how fuckin horrible and simple music is, and is the minds that listen to that shitty fuckin music. Tool is in fact the Led Zeppelin of our time>ahh
everything you said is true..except the zepplin thing...obviously they have influenced tool, but tool sounds like no other band. they are the beggining of their own line of inspirers
@lateralusdrew Tool is more than the Led Zeppelin of our time. Led Zeppelin sucked live, Tool is the most amazing thing to witness in concert, it's unreal. They perform every song so precisely and so accurately, they make music that is based on a live concert environment. However Parabola is one of the harder songs to perform so it's not quite up to par with the album but most of their stuff is better live.
@cRACkmONKEyTTU dude fuck you led zeppelin did not suck live, actually if you want to get into it. these days maynard sucks at singing. and i love tool man dont get me wrong, but to say that the led was terrible live when you werent even alive when they were touring is just fucking ignorant and incorrect
@Asquared2010 Wrong choice of words, Led Zep didnt suck live, im sure some shows were great and i would have loved to see them. Having said that, Jimmy Page was sloppy live, especially if he was on dope, which he was from the mid to late seventies. Plant also was sub par live cuz he was a smoker. Jones and Bonham are always fantastic tho.
But to say that Maynard sucks now is blasphemy. I've seen them on every tour since the last Lateralus one and his voice sounds great, especially last summer.
@Asquared2010 I dont know about the led zeppelin part, but about Maynard's voice is somewhat true. He said so himself in interviews that he pushed the envelope back in the days while singing and it strained his voice, wich resulted in that they cant play some of their songs now wich kinda sucks.
I honestly think that tool is A step further in music evolution. They realy had a contact with some kind of muse. I dont know how to put this in words... After listening Tool I think any music is crap exept classical music if you know what i mean
dude i totally agree, well said.... i listen to tool like 90 percent of the time, at least, other shit just does not compare. and well done with the classical statement, not enough people listen to it.
I believe the step they have taken revolves around their concept of the music as a whole. If you have noticed every song is balanced between the instruments, i.e. vocals, bass, guitar, and drums. They are all cohesive and do not shine over one or the other during much of their playing. Just like Classical which is much more balanced than today's mainstream pop driven garbage. Tool as brought back music from its misshapen form that the industry has forced it to.
I agree. It is simply art. They are reaching archetypes. Besides that, i love the fact that this virtue is coming from a "Hard rock band". This makes me feel like a Slap Of Conscience... making me search for art, and stop losing my time on what for example the tv or the entertainment world has to offer.
OMG i was trying to word that in my head just then, thats exactly what i thought about tool. its as if tool works on each song for like a year until theyve found the best melodies that are humanly possible and then mix it up with telepathic meditative magick and then put it on disc.
@nevovi - I agree with you in sooo many ways, but don't do yourself a disservice by closing off to all the other great artists and songs that are out there. Tool brings so much depth and brilliance to all their music/songs, but sometimes bands like Opeth, Metallica, The Mars Volta... and even some pop music can do the same. You just have to remain open to it.
@UTubergskye I know what you mean. Music can make us live so many different adventures. You never know what melody can make you travel out of this planet :)
@nevovi Tool might be another step in music evolution, but it also requires active participation from the listeners. Without participation from the listeners, there is no influence, just sounds.
@nevovi yea!!! TOOL are on another level, like aphex twin for me, and where else do you ind such developed music, i listen to beethoven now for the same feelin ai get from TOOL, i hope they know they do this to people........ they just send your mind flying open wide......
@nevovi LOL touched by a muse... jesus man, they're just good musicians. And as for everything else being crap... get maynard's dick out of your mouth and listen to some music, if you think meshuggah, strapping young lad, pantera, pink floyd, dream theater, alice in chains...... are crap, then you mom should have aborted you.
@goldencalf hahahaha get m.d out of my mouth... good one man. I get your point. I agree with you on pink floyd and dream theater. I still stand on my words. This kind of band appears every century since the 70´s finished.
@goldencalf Actually you're an idiot, the bands you listed aren't bad but they aren't Tool. I challenge you or any other band in the world to read some of Carl Jung's work and then write a song like 46&2 or any of the other songs they write about deep subjects and rock as hard as they do. Tool is the only band I've ever found that after looking into what their lyrics mean makes me go "Holy shit, I know nothing." Problem with guys like you is that you already know everything.
@RADBSC2 At no point did I claim to know everything. I do know that tool is just a band, with just dudes that happen to be super good musicians. You're just another pretentious squid that got sucked into the tool fad. And if you honestly think that you have a clue about what they write their songs about, you're fooling yourself, but then we both know that isn't a real tall order now is it?
There are few bands of their caliber because barely anyone takes the time and focus it requires to make truly great music. That's why it takes tool 5 years to make an amazing album and takes fall out boy two weeks to make a load of crap
because not everyone is as artistic as Tool, and even if they were, people are lookign for money, which can be made faster elsewere for less artistic value. It's sad, really.
yes, they just stand there because they are no longer in thier 20's.... Maynard is like 45 now... if he was still jumping around like a madman that would be fairly disturbing
The material you'd be hard-pressed to hear them play is that of Opiate and Undertow. I saw them early last year, and Swamp Song was the only pre-Aenima track the played. I should probably add, seeing them was one of the best experiences of my life
i dont think they've played either of those live recently... usually they stick to songs off of what album they jus released and a few other good ones... like this was during lateralus, i would kill to see one of those shows
Intension is of 10k days, the latest, so there's every chance they'd play that at one of their shows on the present tour. Parabol/a was certainly one of the premier tracks off the previous album, so again, there's little reason why they wouldn't play it on the current tour.
yeah i saw them in 06 and 07 and both times i hoped they'd play parabola and they didn't. both times they didn't play intension either although i do not know why
fuck these idiots screaming like animals at the beginning

Parabol is so tranquil and hypnotic then parabola just makes you want to kill people :) fucking insane only tool can do something like that . Little surprise why LAteralus got like triple platinum.

patience..i like that.though i have really no patience in life at all. well very little indeed.

@lateralusdrew thats beautiful man.....
LOLZ614 1 year ago
@lateralusdrew Tool is more than the Led Zeppelin of our time. Led Zeppelin sucked live, Tool is the most amazing thing to witness in concert, it's unreal. They perform every song so precisely and so accurately, they make music that is based on a live concert environment. However Parabola is one of the harder songs to perform so it's not quite up to par with the album but most of their stuff is better live.
cRACkmONKEyTTU 11 months ago
@cRACkmONKEyTTU dude fuck you led zeppelin did not suck live, actually if you want to get into it. these days maynard sucks at singing. and i love tool man dont get me wrong, but to say that the led was terrible live when you werent even alive when they were touring is just fucking ignorant and incorrect
Asquared2010 10 months ago
@Asquared2010 Wrong choice of words, Led Zep didnt suck live, im sure some shows were great and i would have loved to see them. Having said that, Jimmy Page was sloppy live, especially if he was on dope, which he was from the mid to late seventies. Plant also was sub par live cuz he was a smoker. Jones and Bonham are always fantastic tho.
But to say that Maynard sucks now is blasphemy. I've seen them on every tour since the last Lateralus one and his voice sounds great, especially last summer.
cRACkmONKEyTTU 10 months ago
@Asquared2010 I dont know about the led zeppelin part, but about Maynard's voice is somewhat true. He said so himself in interviews that he pushed the envelope back in the days while singing and it strained his voice, wich resulted in that they cant play some of their songs now wich kinda sucks.
Sargatha 9 months ago
you got to have patience on this two songs but there cool
Xavmasterrr1478 3 years ago
its as if theyve put an lsd experience in each song...theyre so intense

I honestly think that tool is A step further in music evolution. They realy had a contact with some kind of muse. I dont know how to put this in words... After listening Tool I think any music is crap exept classical music if you know what i mean
nevovi 3 years ago 31
dude i totally agree, well said.... i listen to tool like 90 percent of the time, at least, other shit just does not compare. and well done with the classical statement, not enough people listen to it.
gomikego65 3 years ago 5
I believe the step they have taken revolves around their concept of the music as a whole. If you have noticed every song is balanced between the instruments, i.e. vocals, bass, guitar, and drums. They are all cohesive and do not shine over one or the other during much of their playing. Just like Classical which is much more balanced than today's mainstream pop driven garbage. Tool as brought back music from its misshapen form that the industry has forced it to.
Drumbuff 3 years ago 4
I agree. It is simply art. They are reaching archetypes. Besides that, i love the fact that this virtue is coming from a "Hard rock band". This makes me feel like a Slap Of Conscience... making me search for art, and stop losing my time on what for example the tv or the entertainment world has to offer.
nevovi 3 years ago 5
OMG i was trying to word that in my head just then, thats exactly what i thought about tool. its as if tool works on each song for like a year until theyve found the best melodies that are humanly possible and then mix it up with telepathic meditative magick and then put it on disc.
rondoliomercutio 3 years ago 2
@nevovi - I agree with you in sooo many ways, but don't do yourself a disservice by closing off to all the other great artists and songs that are out there. Tool brings so much depth and brilliance to all their music/songs, but sometimes bands like Opeth, Metallica, The Mars Volta... and even some pop music can do the same. You just have to remain open to it.
UTubergskye 1 year ago
@UTubergskye I know what you mean. Music can make us live so many different adventures. You never know what melody can make you travel out of this planet :)
nevovi 1 year ago
@nevovi Tool might be another step in music evolution, but it also requires active participation from the listeners. Without participation from the listeners, there is no influence, just sounds.
toolistify 1 year ago
@nevovi yea!!! TOOL are on another level, like aphex twin for me, and where else do you ind such developed music, i listen to beethoven now for the same feelin ai get from TOOL, i hope they know they do this to people........ they just send your mind flying open wide......
finlan9 1 year ago
@nevovi LOL touched by a muse... jesus man, they're just good musicians. And as for everything else being crap... get maynard's dick out of your mouth and listen to some music, if you think meshuggah, strapping young lad, pantera, pink floyd, dream theater, alice in chains...... are crap, then you mom should have aborted you.
goldencalf 1 year ago
@goldencalf hahahaha get m.d out of my mouth... good one man. I get your point. I agree with you on pink floyd and dream theater. I still stand on my words. This kind of band appears every century since the 70´s finished.
nevovi 1 year ago
@goldencalf Actually you're an idiot, the bands you listed aren't bad but they aren't Tool. I challenge you or any other band in the world to read some of Carl Jung's work and then write a song like 46&2 or any of the other songs they write about deep subjects and rock as hard as they do. Tool is the only band I've ever found that after looking into what their lyrics mean makes me go "Holy shit, I know nothing." Problem with guys like you is that you already know everything.
RADBSC2 1 year ago
@RADBSC2 At no point did I claim to know everything. I do know that tool is just a band, with just dudes that happen to be super good musicians. You're just another pretentious squid that got sucked into the tool fad. And if you honestly think that you have a clue about what they write their songs about, you're fooling yourself, but then we both know that isn't a real tall order now is it?
goldencalf 1 year ago
a colleauge of mine has a wine-business in upstate arizona in the same town Maynard lives in, its called JEROME, AZ
he recently had maynard over at his house, discussed wine and possibly doing business...
lucky ass guy huh?

There are few bands of their caliber because barely anyone takes the time and focus it requires to make truly great music. That's why it takes tool 5 years to make an amazing album and takes fall out boy two weeks to make a load of crap
phatmoses 3 years ago 29
@phatmoses Lmao well said my fellow Tool Soldier!
anghellicninja420 1 year ago
Why is Tool so good? Why isn't more music to their caliber?
drk18 4 years ago 15
because not everyone is as artistic as Tool, and even if they were, people are lookign for money, which can be made faster elsewere for less artistic value. It's sad, really.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
they just stand there.
not like they used to back in the good ole 90s
I wouldn't move around for a degenerate douche bag teenage audience either.
bannor216 4 years ago
it's about the music, not the audience, ya rookie
andrewgantt 3 years ago 2
yes, they just stand there because they are no longer in thier 20's.... Maynard is like 45 now... if he was still jumping around like a madman that would be fairly disturbing
BellJH 3 years ago
The material you'd be hard-pressed to hear them play is that of Opiate and Undertow. I saw them early last year, and Swamp Song was the only pre-Aenima track the played. I should probably add, seeing them was one of the best experiences of my life
cliverstokes 4 years ago
you lucky bastard, i saw them twice and they didn't play any pre aenima tracks during those shows. regardless both were amazing experiences.
aaenema 4 years ago
normally they play sober...kick ass song, but thats all from the old stuff...but for me its ok, because i like the new stuff a more^^

next time i see tool. and by god i will. i hope to high heaven they play this.
Intension would be interesting too.
jamesrsutton 4 years ago
i dont think they've played either of those live recently... usually they stick to songs off of what album they jus released and a few other good ones... like this was during lateralus, i would kill to see one of those shows
BuddyWillis 4 years ago
Intension is of 10k days, the latest, so there's every chance they'd play that at one of their shows on the present tour. Parabol/a was certainly one of the premier tracks off the previous album, so again, there's little reason why they wouldn't play it on the current tour.
cliverstokes 4 years ago
well ive seen a show from 07 and they didnt play it sorry to burst ur bubble
BuddyWillis 4 years ago
yeah i saw them in 06 and 07 and both times i hoped they'd play parabola and they didn't. both times they didn't play intension either although i do not know why
aaenema 4 years ago
Intension is on Lateralus...no offense.

Tool is, and has been, my favorite band for a very, very long time. Amazing musicians.
Who in the music business has a voice like Maynards, and a sound like Tools? None. Exactly. ^_^
Hands down one of the best bands to come out of our generation.
