A little less than 600 miles, Jack. The story is like a legend now and has changed over time. I wrote the picture book and did as much research as I could, but it was still difficult to determine the truth. What is important is the inspiration Cliff Young brought us. My picture book is still in print after 15 years, THE PUMPKIN RUNNER, and won many awards, including Smithsonian Notable book. He broke the record by over 2 days, btw.
This is incorrect, Cliff Young didn't break the record by 12 hours, he broke the record by almost 2 days with a time of 5 days, 15 hours and 4 minutes.
Yeah Cliff never had a coach or talked to an elite runner, never understood anything about long distance running, never read a book on it or never read runners world........HE ALSO NEVER WENT TO ANY JACKASS MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER.
How is that a "belief story"? The guy had been running all his life, often for several days straight, not the one that the speaker dismissively mentions. The speaker deliberately talks down the guy's experience, knowledge and a lifetime of practice to make it sound like it was just "belief".
@carlfish I think, actually, that Cliff stated himself that he only began running at the age of 56. Certainly the Cliff Young story has been romanticized somewhat, even to the splitting of the prize money (he actually kept $3000 for himself) and the fact that he actually did get some sleep along the way. None of this changes how bloody amazing it was and is. I wrote a song about it, called The Ballad of Cliff Young. It's on my channel. Check it out.
Left out the fact that Cliff young ran 20-30km's everyday for most of his life because he loved running. Wasn't like he woke up one day and decided to try running and started with a race.

wrong, cliff started running COMPETITIVELY at 56. He'd been running by himself his entire life.

I remember watching Cliff on the news when he was running that race. He was a legend; sorely missed.
