The Battle of Britain was decisive in that it was Germanys first major defeat, yes it was close run but the choices Goering took were not as important as is believed. @youpon1000, Maybe but what is certainly true is that without the British tying down large numbers of German forces in the Balklands and North Africa the Nazi's would have had a far larger force to throw at the USSR in the summer of 41, add to this the constant bombing of German war production and the economic blockade that the UK enforced placed a strain on Germany which otherwise wouldnt have existed, without the allies assistance in the early days the USSR faced the real possibitly of defeat.

@Eagle027, The US had nothing to do with the cancelling of "SEA LION" it was cancelled 2 years before the US joined the war because the Luftwaffe was beaten by RAF pilots flying British built planes, what the US did was give us the ability to take the war BACK to the continent. At the start of WW2 over a 1/3rd of the worlds total merchantman tonnange was British and out of the near 15million tons of allied shipping sunk 11million was British, we fought just as hard and nearly twice as long.

@Eagle027, The USA joined the war in Dec 41, 27 months after the UK, but its forces didnt start arriving in meaningful numbers until mid 42, never said US help was anything other than a godsend, enabling us to continue the war but 90% of merchentmen bringing supplies to the UK until 42 onwards were British pre war and British built ships, Lend Lease didnt begin until March 41 and then only after the Brits spent billions of dollars buying equipment and in doing so kickstarting US war production.

The RAF and RN prevented a Nazi invasion of the British Isles.

Let me make myself clear, GB could not have beaten Germany without the USA 's huge resources and manpower but Germany engaged in the USSR simply could never have undertaken an invasion of the UK, it couldnt even manage it when the UK's back was to the wall in 1940.

The Battle of Britain was decisive in that it was Germanys first major defeat, yes it was close run but the choices Goering took were not as important as is believed. British technology had advanced to become decisive and even with a defeat of the RAF the RN would have proved virtually impossible to overcome.
