I'm thinking that in accordance with some Asian philosophical ideas (from Buddhism, Tao, Zen, etc), the fact that these characters can't be preserved makes one understand the idea of impermanence. Similarly, the Buddhist sand mandalas that take so many hours and work are gathered up and put into a river.
Really, even the Mona Lisa won't last forever ;-) so it's just as impermanant as this but just on a slightly longer time scale.
