Can someone remind me-- who the original oldest son was, who played him, and how and why was he written out? i remember Ernie was sort of adopted wasn't he. I know he was Chips real life brother.
@gotch09 - Hello. Did you ever get an answer? Oldest son "Mike" was played by Tim Considine, a Disney child star (Spin & Marty, etc.). I read that he asked to leave the show so he could pursue other interests since acting which had occupied his childhood. Conveniently, he was old enough that marriage (to Sally aka Meredith McCrae) fitted into the script nicely. Trivia: Tim's 1st wife was Charlotte Stewart who later played School Marm Miss Eva Beadle on Little House on the Prairie. Best Wishes.
What ever happened to really good television shows that you would actually watch together as a family and try not to miss an episode??? Those were the days when we had excellent writers and actors that could keep you entertained without having to resort to toilet bowl humour! Now all that we have are stupid reality shows that are nothing more than CRAP!!! My Three Sons was an excellent show!
OMG !!! This show and Patty Duke were what made TV worth watching!!!!! It really tore me up when Fred MacMurray passed away because he was such a talented actor!!!! TenStarsplus and thank you for posting this collage!!!!!! What a tribute to ALL these actors and actresses !!!!!!!!!
We have skyangel and it provides Family Net which airs two episodes per day. I's such joy to return to a time when families were what God intended them to be.
I remember the B/W episodes but didn't realize the show went as far as 1972. The last shows I recall is when Robie and his wife had triplets. What year was that?
Fall of '68, for the '68-68 season, the triplets were born. Fall '67 was the California move, Fall '69 Steve married Barbara, Fall '70 Chip meets Polly and marries her, and Fall'71 Robbie disappeared.
@gotch09 I see you wrote this a year ago. I just came up on the answer on either Wikipedia or IMDB. He was said to be working on a bridge construction project in Peru while Katie stayed to care for the triplets. I didn't remember that he was gone in the last season. Things were going back and forth with all the people on there.
I am now adding a plea to all of the companies out there who are releasing this and other classic episodes of 1960's TV shows. Do Not base your decisions to release future seasons based on the dismal interest of the black and white seasons! As seen from some of the comments on here MOST AMERICANS have never seen the B & W episodes! Most syndicated stations start with the colorized version so obviously those would be the seasons most fans will tune in for and of course buy!
Wish TVland would air this show. I loved as a kid and haven't seen it since. Never realized it was on 12 years, must have lost interest at some point.
To JerseyRich732 , they did show the old episodes about 7 or 8 years ago on nick at nite. I didn't tape any of the episodes because I really didn't like them. You can get season 1 on Netflix. And no I don't work for them, I just rent from them. lol I'm waiting for them to come out with season 6. Even though I prefer season's 7-11 there were a few episodes in season 5 like where Ernie and the whole family are invited to Washington DC as guests of the French Embassy. Too Funny!
I love the show. Especially seasons 7 thru 11. They never show season 12 and with good reason. Don Grady left the show and they actually had Katie contemplating divorce! Hardly suitable material for a family friendly sitcom. One of my favorite episodes is where Uncle Charley tries to throw Katie a tea party. That was hilarious. It was also cool, because the girls Chip was being bossed around by end up saving the day for Uncle Charley. Very Cool.
That was ver nice. thanks. Guess those shows are gone forever.... Funny, even when it ran on TVLand, I never remember William Frawley as "Bub" O ' Casey, are those early episodes gone forever ??? Thanks again for a nice trip down memory lane.
This was one of my favorite shows growing up in the sixties and seventies, watching every Saturday night. I miss the good times watching it, too, bill.
I loved this show. I was surprised to find out that Fred McMurray wasn't that fond of working with the younger actors and shot most of his scenes alone unless absolutely necessary.
There was at least one episode from the sixth season in which Fred MacMurray appears in the entire episode with a female costar, in which his three sons and Uncle Charley think he's getting married, in which they appear at the beginning, and don't return until the end.
@vividwatch47 I saw that episode a few months ago on MeTV. The sons and Charley even make plans to move away. One or two of them arrange to stay with Mike and Sally. That might be the only time that they are mentioned after their leaving the show, unless it was in a quick blurb that they sent word of being unable to attend the weddings of Robbie and Steve.
the series ran for 12 and a half years in prime time from 1960 until 1972. It ran on two television networks, first on ABC then when to CBS. The episodes that were in black-and-white were on ABC from 1960 to 1965. The show switched networks in 1965 when it went from ABC to CBS.
CBS picked it up for its next seven seasons from 1965 to 1972,all in full color. A total of 369 episodes were produced. The complete first season of My Three Sons is out now on DVD.
A.B.C. wouldn't do the sixth season in color, and Tim Considine left when he wasn't allowed to direct any episodes of the series (hence its move to C.B.S., and Barry Livingston as Ernie being adopted as the third son).
Jerry, you did an awesome job on this. I'm very impressed! As you know, "My Three Sons" will be the ongoing theme in my house for the rest of my life.
Contrary to popular rumour, Ernie was NOT a Chinaman.......repeat, Ernie was NOT a Chinaman.......1:31

@gotch09 Originally he was away for work on a bridge or something, but later was drafted into military service.
