A marvelous display of Boxing skill & temperament by Hagler in round 4, Mugabi got hit so many times with the jab. Mugabi had simply very poor defensive movement, he was hit with a good few straights in the face. If i was Hagler, i would have known from then, how i was gonna win.
Hagler is obviously way past his prime here, and still destroyed Mugabi. Leonard even said after this fight, he knew Hagler was easy pickings. Hagler was a credit to the sport, and always gave his best, and deserves praise for this fight. Mugabi? Not so. He fought a badly damaged champion, and still took a beating and ended up second best.
Round 5 Hag was backed up twice-you just don't see that much
Even when Hearns nailed him early in their fight, he just turned sideways a little and paused for a split sec-Mugabi clearly hit him harder than anyone else
@PorkFrog You're exactly right. I think some of the shots Hagler got caught with in round 5 would have seriously hurt most guys, especially the uppercut (at 3:32).
This was just a great fight. Hagler just fought all the Top guys , Hearns , Duran , Leonard , and Mugabi all top contenderers none past their prime. Hagler was one of a kind.
I think Hagler was past his prime by the time he stepped into the ring against Mugabi... He's not displaying as much head movement as he had in the early 80s, and he's throwing himself off balance with some of his punches

At 2:35 the commentators are going on about Mugabi's hand speed while Hagler is landing combinations. Seems a little biased on the commentating? Mugabi did land a good uppercut around the 3:30 mark but Hagler just ate it like candy.
I remember this fight being competitive but I didn't ever think that Hagler was losing it. Both gave a great fight though.
Fucking ridiculous how all these english commentators could think to do was talk shit about Hagler, he would pick Don Curry up by his hands and feet and tear him in two. What a clown. I would have LOVED to see curry even try to gather the balls to fight Hagler, even at his best (curry). fucking shame how poorly hagler was treated... such a peoples champ
I agree. What I like about Hagler was the fact he was a real Champ. Not a Paper Champ. He stayed in the middleweight division for his entire career. Not moving up or down by gaining or losing 5 pounds to capture titles in those bogus "Jr." and "Super" weight classes.
I was wondering who the commentator was that kept talking in favor of Mugabi; it Effin Hearns! No wonder. This must've been after the Right that shut the Lights on The Motor City Cobra.
its actually the other "cobra" don curry who also sat in with reg gutteridge on the hagler-hearns fight and was a refreshing change from jim watt n itv . great commentry from reg though i really miss his classic style super smooth he was
@kingofvintage I agree one of the best chins ever,the one time he was knocked down against "Juan Roldan" in I believe the first round,it looked like a slip & I heard it eventually was changed to a slip,Hagler was proud of never being down,he made sure it was changed.
these commentators suck. Hagler is tagging Mugabi with the jab and they're sitting here talking about Mugabi's hand speed?

Much respect to Mugabi in the 6th. That demolition by Hagler would have destroyed most boxers. A true definition of a chin.

What an incredible fight for Mugabi. Unfortunately, the ability to take hard punches that he showed here deserted him after this fight.

@catstudent1
Indeed. He also didn't have to take that many punches, making him even harder to beat.

@jwdt426 Actually British commentators and critics hold Hagler in the highest regard and consider him one of the greatest middleweights ever.

@jwdt426
Reg Gutteridge had full respect for Hagler as did his BBC opposite number Harry Carpenter.
I know, I watched the great man's fights on British TV when I was a kid.

Hearns and Hagler were the best of friends after their fight.

I never realized how good a counter-puncher Mugabi was.
All the more reason Hagler should be proud of this one.
