Police chases through residential areas can end in tragedy for people uninvolved. the policy of pulling back a few hundred meters just fills the fleeing suspect with an embolden spirit that invariably leads to the very crash they were seeking to prevent. What I want to know is why a British police car is going by miles per hour instead of kilometers. And also the barriers would not have been on the track the cop would most likely have pushed them to the other side of the tracks. The policeman wasn't being polite, I think he was just stunned at the mans actions and didn't want to risk outrunning the train. The barriers might have even popped his tires.

He decided not to cross the tracks in pursuit of the car thief BECAUSE A) the barriers would have gone on to the track or into the opposite cars and B) the barriers could have crashed into the train and derailed it. The police are more use alive than dead. And if you live in America, your country uses mph as well.
