It might be an exaggeration to say that Jackson was a "champion" of enslaved blacks. He was eager to have them tought to read b/c his love of the Gospel surpassed everything else. He might have advocated enlisting blacks as soldiers in the CSA but that is not being an abolitionist. His actions & views have more to do w/ his idiosyncratic obsessions.
Actually, I think Jackson might have been an Aspergers case, to judge by his behavior.
He was a God fearing man who loved everyone including blacks. He taught slaves how to read and right even though it was illegal. It is time for some of the people that commented on here to let go of the hatred their holding on to because their ancestors were persecuted.Look at what the persecution our Lord and Savior went through just so he could give us even the very people who hung him on the cross eternal life if we accept him as our Savior....God have mercy on us!!!
@daretodream...I beg to differ. The "times" had nothing to do with anything here. The south maintained that it couldn't maintain their economy if not for slavery. TOO FUCKING BAD! If you can't run a 3,000 acre estate without enslaving another human being, you shouldn't HAVE that 3,000 acre estate. To be against slavery and fight for the "states rights" to own slaves is incongruous. All this god shit makes me sick. You can't be religious and believe it's okay for anyone to own a slave.
Jackson and Lee were excellent Generals and good Christian men. You can't judge people by the times they lived in. That is insane and totally unfair. May they rest in peace. God bless Dixie!
I have no qualms with agreeing with your assertion that Jackson was a great tactitioner and family man. However, anyone that sides with an "idea", that states' rights far exceed that of the individual by taking up arms to support such a cause is in my eyes a hypocrite. There may have been blacks that honored him, but, those were probably the ones directly, not indirectly, affected by him. Therefore I find it hard to believe that those who never met him, revered him.
Blacks honored him. he protested against slavery, and was very religous--something that you people on here dont know. But he fought for the cause, he fought against tyranny.
BTW Flipthecat, Ulysses S Grant owned AT LEAST 4 slaves and was forced to give them up after the emancipation rolled around. Jackson owned none (believed that all men were created equal), and Lee owned ONE slave (historians believe he was a free black but stayed with his master b/c of his own choice to do so)
oh and before I forget. Robert E. Lee owned several slaves that belonged to his father and used them to pay off his father's debt (duh). Oh and who didn't own slave in that day including Ulysses S. Grant? Many of the founding fathers owned slaves (except John Adams), don't even try it that. And no Blacks didn't revered then and they certainly don't do so now. And what this about him being religious? So was Robert Dabney, didn't stop him from supporting slavery. Nice try.
Stonewall Jackson caring about blacks, please, you know for a man who you all claim to help blacks he sure had no problem fighting so that they may be inslaved by the south and northern states.
Military genius?!? HA! that's a laugh, if he was so great then why did he lose the civil war?!? Thank goodness he did too or I'd be an enslaved person right now! No self-respecting black person will ever honor such a horrid man.
You're obviously more into "crap" music than historical fact. Jackson's death in May, 1863 (shot by his own men accidentally) was one of the major turning points of the war. Ever heard of the valley campaign? No? Didn't think so--too busy listening to Ludicris on the ipod? Why don't you go to West Point and ask them what kind of military genius Jackson was? Did you know he taught hundreds of blacks how to read and also preached to them before the war? Blacks who knew him revered him.
If he was such a genius than why he lose the war? And I don't listen to :"crap" hip-hop. I don't care if he taught blacks how to read, he's still a sick vile man, and Ulysses S. Grant was a much better man. Whatever Robert E Lee did Ulysses did better. I stand by my previous statement. THAT GOD THAT MAN LOST OR I'D BE IN CHAINS!!!!!

He was a great man, but his death was an absolute good for our country and human rights. It shortened the Civil War and saved countless lives.

Since you choose to be ignorant, he is what you can do
1. Go to your public library
2. Check out a Stonewall Jackson biography, and while you're there, consider getting one on Lee and Grant too.
3. Call any military institute of your choice, and ask to be put in touch with a history proffesor. Ask about Jackson.
It's trash people like you who destroy our heritage and our country: Both the CSA and the USA.
**also, if the south won the war, slavery wouldnt exist.
