Just fought Van on Unknown the other day. All I can say is WOW! That guy's defense is really, really high! (I was at lvl 159) Now... LET'S DO IT AGAIN!
beating van the final time is tough on unknown with level 90s got down to only jade and it looked like i might win if i could keep it up ( basicly casting icicle rain over and over again ) but then accidently used splash and gave him a water FOF needless to say frigid coffin hurts alot =(
Van was a great final boss, and pretty difficult to boot.
For instance: On my victory against him, he was at 36,000 HP and my characters (aside from Luke, who I controlled) were all dead. I had no Life Bottles left and I nearly ran out of items during the battle with him. I managed to avoid his Judgement attack a few times, until I got the finishing blow on him. Had he hit me again, I would've lost.
Lol in his second form. I use tear to cast judgement after tear finish casting. Van too uses judgement at the SAME time! Armageddon on the battlefield!!!!
Okay, so I get him down to 13000 HP in his first form when Tear Luke and Guy die right. I switch to Jade and solo defeat his first form. I fight his second form and all die but Luke this time at around 110,000 HP for Van. I solo fight him til he's down to 90,000 and then my controller doesn't fully recognize my movement and make's Luke walk and I die. I had it on normal for I had no life bottles. Was fun though. Gotta back track through the huge-ass dungeon for items though -_- urgh.
@TwinArrival Well I went back down and got down got items and the AMAZING TITLES that you get if you go back to Emperor Peony after seeing the scene at the staircase before you go up and fight him. Needless to say the costumes were worth the walk. Also, if you wear Wild Saber on the next playthrough when you first meet Guy the funniest thing happens XD

@MrInsanity25 Well I haven't played the ps2 version so I don't know if there are any other mystic arte glicthes. However I had one . The last boss's one XD If I interupt the mycstic arte, th boss would just stand there and i could hit him for eternity and never being able to kill him. I had to redo the last boss three times before I could finish the game.. But the game is Awesome! :3
@zidaneandsora XD Thathilarious. Well supposedly in american PS2 TotA, there were extensions on mystic artes but some of them would freeze your character for the entire battle. Like Jade has one I believe. I hope they''ve been fixed. Thanks XD

@zidaneandsora They could be like Mystic Artes and only be on your 2nd playthrough (the secondary mystic artes) they may also require wierd combos or inputs
@madsli well van is a decendant of yulia and their blood fonons and their flesh fonons are diffrent from normal human being... only yulia's decendant have those things and about the wings in van's hand is about yulia's part of sacred wings that is being absorbed... if it absorbed completely then van will become yulia and his hands will grow wings...
@SonicChaocc Let's say you can fit TotA on the DS. You'd have to make all new graphics, it would sound horrible, you would probably have to remove all the voice acting and the intro, with the screen resolution on the DS you'd have to spend most battles not being able to see anything. Overall it would be a vastly inferior downgraded port. The 3DS has a more suitable screen resolution, more power and a good sound chip. It's not Nintendo's fault the game wouldn't work on the original DS.
@DrolKeegEht And its in 3D :P (the key selling point) Although the 3D isnt the best i've seen on a video game, for those who live in Europe this is worth a buy, heck, its worth a buy to anyone and everyone. I completed the game last night and its now one of my faviroute games. I just started a new game plus! :D

What bothers me is nintendo deducted points because it didn't use 3D as much as other games. It's a port. How about the fact that many of the PS2 version's problems were fixed? Don't those matter? Sometimes I lose faith in NP. XD
@MrInsanity25 Although its not as good 3D as lets say RE-Revelations, the 3D in the game is actualy not that bad compared to what some critics say. I thought that the 3D in the game was quite good, the cutscenes arn't in 3D and the text bubbles stand out but to me 3D is a gimmic, this, is a real game!
@ThatMellon Same here. I think 3D is cool but it shouldn't be the main aspect of a game to a reviewer. That was the only complaint I saw from NP. It bugs me to because it was an amazing game on the PS2 and the port fixes the load times and lag issues I hear. So I don't see any downside. If the 3DS didn't have 3D that TotA would've got an 8 or a 9.
@MrInsanity25 Very true but with the 3DS the main selling point is that it displays games in 3D. Critics will view the game as a 3DS tittle what has little to offer in the 3D realm of gaming. Its understandable but still an unfair judgement.

I just finished the game yesterday took me 41hrs without anything extra but I got lazy after I hit lvl 60 and barely fought anything and used the autopilot ever since I got it....getting Legendia today after I beat that it's time for 2nd playthroughs on both.

@Tombstoner28 There is NO "worst" in the Tales Final Boss themes. All of them are good, they have their own kind of epic, "seriously must win" situation to go with the song. But yea I have to agree with your view of the songs.

Dam Van I almost killed him then he started spam Shining Blade that killed Luke and Guy on my pt. I tried 2 use some life pots but he spammed Judgement and the first 2 beams were exactly where Tear and Jade were >.<, owned in 10 sec....

It's when he starts to spam Judgment that makes him evil. I didn't get to fight Nebelim but she doesn't seem to spam any field hitting spells too often.
It actually seems alot less "unfitting" when you actually do the fight. I used to wonder how it would fit, until I played the game. Then it seemed to fit more than any other theme.
I just finished the game recently totally fucking loved this battle! Even though the 2nd and 3rd round went rather smoothly and enjoyably, it was hard! I did my best to avoid Van's Imperial Slaughter or his Elegy arte, since both would slaughter X.X Got all dreamy eyed when Tear started singing Grand phonic hymn the the stage turned blue and pretty XD
Abyss reaches it's peak entertainment when you replay it with 10x experience and face the battles on the highest difficulty, the x3.5 or x4.0 stat increase one. Then you can have some long very satisfying major boss battles.
But why 10x experience? That really makes it seem boring again xD" With 2x experience it'll be very tough, but with several skills (glory *cough*) you'll be just fine.
I went for 10x exp for a huge unknown run of the game, thats probably why people get that at the grade shop. Even with glory and other helpful skills, you still get slaughtered.
Well i started playing LGENEDIA yesterday after getting my ass kicked by Gloomietta at Choral Castle in VH -_- ... i played Legendia for 2 hours... weird game.... fighting system seems too much of a button masher... i didnt have to even worry to block, backstep or anything... i might play again in the next couple of days if i manage to stop playing PERSONA on PSP XD
I wonder why this game was so underrated :/ This is top 3 on my list of the best games Namco has ever came out with. Wonder why not very many people have hard of this particular franchise, cuz I personally think it is equal, if not better than Tales of Symphonia (which is a great game by the way)
Personally.... This is the Best Tales i've played (I Own Symphonia, Abyss, Legendia(havent played yet), Eternia, Destiny, World and Phantasia)... Phantasia's Charm is hard to beat tho [Mint <3]
Ive played and Symphonia, beat Abyss (but im playing it again on unknown mode XD) and I heard that Legendia was just HORRIBLE! Lol. Phantasia, I played about half way through, and Destiny Ive been wanting to play. I think Abyss was the best game ive ever played.
This (and a few other Abyss songs) started running through my head at work yesterday. The only word to describe the mood it put me in is "triumphant."
Yeah, I did still enjoy it lol, and I wasn't too far away from the reveal - I just always think that you get the best experience from a game with a great story if you don't know what's coming, and especially in games as long as the Tales series - the story gives you reason to keep going, and you're playing to find out more, but when things are spoiled, it some times feels like it's not worth playing through a long game any more.
(Not that I wouldn't have finished ToV anyway - it's awesome! lol)

Dukes 2nd form is hell, so many ailments, plus he teloports. 1st form doen't even get to finish talking, 2nd form either give me Game Over or get massacered(sp?) my Dhaos Blast.
yeah hes hard but in his third form he really makes you feel worthless because i think he still has the ailments, and when hes really low on helth dont give him a chance to use brave vesperia all that work for nothing :(
I spent 3 minutes not even attacking when he was at 3000 HP because the party was dead, cept for Ristelle XD and they had 3 TP and 1 TP respecivly, thus life bottle tossing, and lotsa death ensued. No Brave Vesperia though:P

I just finished the game yesterday took me 41hrs without anything extra but I got lazy after I hit lvl 60 and barely fought anything and used the autopilot ever since I got it....getting Legendia today after I beat that it's time for 2nd playthroughs on both.

In my opinion, this song is okay, but by far the worst of the final battle themes. For me, it's probably to do with the mood. For me, it goes:
time to raise the cross - Energy, Intensity
a place in the sun - Strength, Epicness
finish the promise - Desperation, Perseverance
What do you guys think?

@Tombstoner28 There is NO "worst" in the Tales Final Boss themes. All of them are good, they have their own kind of epic, "seriously must win" situation to go with the song. But yea I have to agree with your view of the songs.

Dam Van I almost killed him then he started spam Shining Blade that killed Luke and Guy on my pt. I tried 2 use some life pots but he spammed Judgement and the first 2 beams were exactly where Tear and Jade were >.<, owned in 10 sec....

this is probably the best final boss theme. it kind of makes you feel the words: NOW FINISH HIM OFF!!!! are flashing on the screen. i love this theme

everyone thinks this song sucks, but actually I find that abyss's songs weren't for actual ear appeal but for heart appeal
I mean the fact that they stuck in the grand fonic hymn in random parts was supposed to appeal to your soul

It actually seems alot less "unfitting" when you actually do the fight. I used to wonder how it would fit, until I played the game. Then it seemed to fit more than any other theme.

I just finished the game recently totally fucking loved this battle! Even though the 2nd and 3rd round went rather smoothly and enjoyably, it was hard! I did my best to avoid Van's Imperial Slaughter or his Elegy arte, since both would slaughter X.X Got all dreamy eyed when Tear started singing Grand phonic hymn the the stage turned blue and pretty XD

Abyss reaches it's peak entertainment when you replay it with 10x experience and face the battles on the highest difficulty, the x3.5 or x4.0 stat increase one. Then you can have some long very satisfying major boss battles.

I went for 10x exp for a huge unknown run of the game, thats probably why people get that at the grade shop. Even with glory and other helpful skills, you still get slaughtered.

Well i started playing LGENEDIA yesterday after getting my ass kicked by Gloomietta at Choral Castle in VH -_- ... i played Legendia for 2 hours... weird game.... fighting system seems too much of a button masher... i didnt have to even worry to block, backstep or anything... i might play again in the next couple of days if i manage to stop playing PERSONA on PSP XD

I wonder why this game was so underrated :/ This is top 3 on my list of the best games Namco has ever came out with. Wonder why not very many people have hard of this particular franchise, cuz I personally think it is equal, if not better than Tales of Symphonia (which is a great game by the way)

Personally.... This is the Best Tales i've played (I Own Symphonia, Abyss, Legendia(havent played yet), Eternia, Destiny, World and Phantasia)... Phantasia's Charm is hard to beat tho [Mint <3]

Ive played and Symphonia, beat Abyss (but im playing it again on unknown mode XD) and I heard that Legendia was just HORRIBLE! Lol. Phantasia, I played about half way through, and Destiny Ive been wanting to play. I think Abyss was the best game ive ever played.

Yeah, I did still enjoy it lol, and I wasn't too far away from the reveal - I just always think that you get the best experience from a game with a great story if you don't know what's coming, and especially in games as long as the Tales series - the story gives you reason to keep going, and you're playing to find out more, but when things are spoiled, it some times feels like it's not worth playing through a long game any more.
(Not that I wouldn't have finished ToV anyway - it's awesome! lol)

ToV only just came out in Europe and I haven't finished it yet, and now, thanks to listening to music from a DIFFERENT game, I now have the identity of the end boss spoiled for me. Thanks a lot.

Dukes 2nd form is hell, so many ailments, plus he teloports. 1st form doen't even get to finish talking, 2nd form either give me Game Over or get massacered(sp?) my Dhaos Blast.

yeah hes hard but in his third form he really makes you feel worthless because i think he still has the ailments, and when hes really low on helth dont give him a chance to use brave vesperia all that work for nothing :(

I spent 3 minutes not even attacking when he was at 3000 HP because the party was dead, cept for Ristelle XD and they had 3 TP and 1 TP respecivly, thus life bottle tossing, and lotsa death ensued. No Brave Vesperia though:P

Yep, definatly the 2nd form of Duke. But i've gone on about Vesperia enough, this is an Abyss Song. Tales FTW:D Van, you rocked the world with your awesome, litterally, now may you rest in peace*prays Van is resting peacefully*. Epic freaking song, this is my Alarm Clock song:D I always get up 3:00 after the song starts, but turn it off till the end of the 2nd or 5th loop:D
